The Hancock County commissioners awarded two contracts Tuesday to Hume Supply, Lima, for the demolition of several buildings along North Main Street in Findlay.
Work should begin in the third week of August, and the company said it will take about 45 days to complete.
Hume Supply was by far the lowest bidder on the project. The company bid $33,567 for the demolition of buildings at 115, 117, 119, 121, 123, 125 and 131 N. Main St., and $4,650 for the demolition of a building at 120 N. Main St.
Bids went as high as $128,300 for the demolition of the multiple buildings, and up to $24,950 to tear down 120 N. Main St. In all, 15 bids were received for the work.
Steve Wilson, project manager for the Hancock County Engineer's Office, said money from the county's Moving Ohio Forward Grant will pay for the demolition of all the buildings, except for 120 N. Main St. Money from the county's flood-control fund will paid for the demolition of that building.
Hancock County has nearly $10 million in its flood fund. The money comes from a portion of county sales tax revenue, and $1.8 million paid into the fund by the City of Findlay from income tax collections.
Money from the Moving Ohio Forward Grant came from a settlement with five of the largest mortgage banks in the nation. Facing government lawsuits over alleged foreclosure abuses, fraud and deceptive mortgage practices, the banks agreed to settle. Participating in the settlement are Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo and GMAC/Ally.
A total of $75 million in demolition funds will be distributed among Ohio's 88 counties. The county is eligible for $406,000 from the Moving Ohio Forward Grant.

PERRY -- Houston County schools will delay the demolition of Rumble Academy until August 2015, school officials decided Tuesday during a retreat.
The aged building, which was slated to be demolished in August 2014, will continue standing for an additional year to give the community a chance to save it.
The building is scheduled to be torn down as part of a school improvement project, a move that sparked controversy throughout the community. A group of residents rallied against the demolition, arguing that the building -- which housed the original Warner Robins High School -- is part of the towns short history and should remain standing.
Im elated that theyre giving us more time to think about this and come up with a plan, said Brian Russ, a Warner Robins High alumnus and participant in the Save Rumble movement.
The group has applied for Rumble to be designated as one of the Places in Peril by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The designation would open the door for potential grants and other funding, especially with the delay we have now, Russ said.
Still, school board members voiced concerns about how the 68-year-old building could be used. Previously, school board members have questioned the cost and efficiency of refurbishing and maintaining the old building. The demolition would cost a little more than $1 million.
While he agreed to pushing the demolition date back, school board member Skip Dawkins said a group must be completely committed to a renovation project for it to work. Otherwise, the building must be demolished, he said.
Unless youve got somebody who really wants to get in the middle of it, ... it just becomes a burden that they expect us to bear, which we cant, he said.

Houston schools to delay Rumble demolition

Temple caretaker Anpalagan Thandavaryam, 52, said he had sent a letter to the mayor and City Hall to ask for a seven-day extension when the notice was issued to tear down the small temple.
"We were shocked when a bulldozer and 25 City Hall enforcement officers tore down the temple at 8.45am on Wednesday (July 24)," he said.
He claimed that they were not shown any documents before the demolition and City Hall only filed a police report after the temple was demolished.
He said the temple was established in 1930 and was moved to the 6m by 6m space beside City View condominium three years ago.
"I've been taking care of this temple for many years and have watched it become a place of worship for many," said Anpalagan.
He said the shrine was run on charity and donations from devotees.
"We have not obstructed anyone's path. To see the temple being demolished is very depressing."
Temple devotee Datuk Bathumalai Apparu, 46, said this was not the proper way to demolish the temple.
"The statues of the temple along with other religious items were confiscated by City Hall and that is what saddens me," he said.

Spain is counting the cost of the collapse of a decade-long property boom thats sent home prices falling about 30 percent since the start of 2008, driven unemployment to 26 percent and burdened banks with mounting bad loans that have made them wary of extending new credit.
Demolition man Daniel Anka had a staff of 450 in Spain preparing for new developments before the property crash. With about a 10th of that workforce left, hes now waiting for a call from the countrys bad bank so his trimmed-down crew can start knocking down half-built homes that arent worth completing.
Anka may not have long to wait as Sareb, the unit holding soured real estate assets from Spains nationalized banks, orders work to stop on about 160 of the 650 partially-completed building projects on its books and decides which ones are worth completing. A small number of them may be demolished, said two people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified by name because it isnt public.
We expect the bad bank will start to seek bids for some demolition projects starting this summer, said Anka, chairman of Madrid-based Anka Demoliciones and vice-chairman of the Spanish Association of Demolition Businesses.

A decision by Sareb to raze unfinished properties would demonstrate it makes more sense to knock down homes than try to sell them as an economic slump drags into a sixth year, said Fernando Rodriguez de Acuna, a project manager at Madrid-based real estate consultant RR de Acuna & Asociados.
If demolitions start in sizeable volumes, that could be a positive sign because it would be a recognition that its impossible to sell these assets under any circumstances, Rodriguez de Acuna said by phone. At least if you knock them down, the land can be put to some other use.
Spain set up Sareb last year to absorb the souring real estate assets of eight lenders including the Bankia (BKIA) group that took a combined 41 billion euros of state aid as the government sought European funds to help clean up its banking system.
Sareb has taken on about 200,000 assets. This includes 107,000 properties, 76,000 of which are empty homes, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos told Congress in March. The bad bank plans to sell assets with a value of 1.5 billion euros ($2 billion) this year, he said.
Bids for the first group of properties to be sold, known as Project Bull, were due by July 18, according to a spokesman for Sareb who asked not to be named in line with its policy. No decision on the sale has been made, the spokesman said.

Spain Weighs Home Demolitions as Wrecking Crews on Alert
Demolition of the 90-year-old Quincy High School building is slated to happen before the end of summer, but the wrecking ball wont swing until the city gets final approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Last week, city officials said the demolition was imminent, but the Corps of Engineers said Tuesday that it is still waiting on a formal request from the city to alter a 2006 agreement with the federal agency.
Were still waiting on them, said Tim Dugan, an Army Corps spokesman in Concord. They have to request from the Corps to modify the agreement before doing anything to the building.
But City Solicitor James Timmins said Quincy has made a request to the Army Corps and is waiting to finalize the agreement.
I am not sure when, but the demolition will be done in August, Timmins said. Were dealing with Mass. Historic (Commission) and the Army Corps. They have bigger agendas, and its difficult to get timely ebbs and flow from them.
In June, some Quincy city councilors questioned Mayor Thomas Kochs plan to borrow $2.5 million to raze the former high school and replace it with a park.
Taking down the old high school, which is on a 3.85-acre site next to the new high school, will cost about $2.4 million, according to estimates provided by James Fatseas, the mayors executive secretary.
Of that, about $1 million was spent last year to survey and remove hazardous materials, like asbestos, from the old building. That work was funded using contingency funds built into the budget for the new high school project, officials said.
After the old school is demolished, the mayor has proposed putting in a park and adding 35 to 50 parking spots for the new school.
That phase of the project, scheduled to start in October, would cost about $1.65 million, officials said.
