Bankrupted By Feng Shui, Man Torches Sifu's Office

Alion Yeo remains unfazed by the incident.

A businessman has set fire to famous Hong Kong feng shui master Alion Yeo Tin Ming's office, accusing him of making untrue predictions that caused his family and multi-million dollar business to fall apart.

Suen Lok Wai, 42, used to be a millionaire and a businessman in the construction industry, whose properties in Hong Kong and Shanghai amounted to HK$17M (RM7M). On top of that, he owned a shophouse on Hollywood Road, Hong Kong.

He claimed that his life took a drastic change after he listened to Alion's advice and moved his business and family to Shanghai. Suen first turned to the fengshui masteralso a TV personalityfor advice when he and his wife failed to conceive a child after many years of marriage. Alion made a prediction that they would have one soon and it came true two years later.

When Suen's wife was pregnant with their second child, Alion made a prophecy that the kid would grow up to be an extremely important leading figure in China, provided if he was born there. If the baby was delivered in Hong Kong, "he would only be [Hong Kong] Chief Executive at most", Alion allegedly said. What's more, the fortune teller allegedly told Suen that the latter's business would thrive and his profit would multiply if he moved to China.

Suen took Alion's word for it, sold one of his properties and moved to Shanghai. However, his life and business did not unfold the way he expected. His business failed, causing him to sell off his properties to pay for his debts. It jeopardised his family ties, too, with his wife leaving him and moving to the U.S. with their two sons (aged 10 and 7).

Suen returned to Hong Kong and tried to start a new business, but his second attempt also failed. A hopeless and desperate Suen soon turned to Alion again, demanding the latter to pay HK$12,800 for a Guanyin statue he gave him in the past.

Alion paid him the amount, but Suen returned to Alion's office early this year, this time demanding for HK$25,000, the amount he had paid Alion in the past for his services. His requests were turned down by the Alion's employees. Half an hour later, they heard a loud bang and realised that the main entrance of the office was on fire.

Nutley Revenue and Finance Commissioner Thomas Evans has introduced municipal ordinances that would restrict fences and building use, the latter where parking is inadequate.

Nutley Revenue and Finance Commissioner Thomas Evans proposes a prohibition on fences in front yards.

An amended township code would prohibit any type of fence in a front yard. In addition, the ordinance details requirements for side and rear fences.

Evans also introduced an ordinance prohibiting certain building or premises use unless there is onsite parking.

This would include family dwellings, restaurants, retail stores, offices, hospitals and warehouses, according to the ordinance.

A two-family dwelling should have a minimum of four parking spaces, with at least one space being a garage. Restaurants and bars would be required to have a minimum of one parking space for each 10 seats, the ordinance states. Offices would need a minimum of one parking space for each 300 square feet of floor area.

Public hearings on the ordinances are slated for Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The Nutley Board of Commissioners approved a bond ordinance for capital improvements.

Sponsored by Evans, the ordinance appropriates an aggregated amount of $1.48 million. The amount also authorizes "the issuance of $1.4 million bonds or notes of the township for financing part of the cost."
