SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) The bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Springfield has given the green light for the partial demolition of a school that was heavily damaged in a tornado more than two years ago.

The move comes after an arbitration panel ruled earlier this month that the diocese can receive nearly $49 million for the replacement of Cathedral High School.

A spokesman for Bishop Timothy McDonnell tells the Republican newspaper of Springfield (http://bit.ly/1bdFkgb ) that demolition work can begin on a section of the building that housed the gymnasium and auditorium.

The diocese had wanted $70 million to replace the school but the insurance company, Catholic Mutual Group, had initially argued the school could be repaired and offered $15 million.

The building has been closed since the June 1, 2011 tornado.

Tornado-damaged Mass. school set for demolition

The demolition of a historic South Main Street building rendered unsalvageable by a fire began Tuesday after a brief delay.

Fire Chief William Kessler said abutter concerns held up the process of taking down the Bank Building, a Victorian-era structure gutted by fire on July 18.

"They had to come up with a new plan," he said, noting that the building demolition will be done in a more cautious, slower manner. "They were hoping to get a lot of work done (Tuesday), but the work will take a few days."

The cause of the fire is officially undetermined, but current evidence points to an electrical fire. According to a department release, there is not enough evidence, and may never be enough, to definitively determine how it started.

"It seems to have started in an inaccessible void space on the third floor," Kessler said. "While we're leaning toward an electrical fire, we can't prove it with the evidence."

The section of Rte. 122 in front of the building remains closed because of structural concerns, but Kessler said re-opening the road is a priority.

"As soon as the building gets to the point where the instability is gone, I believe it is the intent of public safety to re-open at least one lane of the road," he said. "The town's committed to opening the road as soon as possible."

Kessler said he believes the road will open before the building is entirely demolished, as engineers said the front and back walls of the third floor were causing the instability, but he did not know when that would be.

The building was the site of a six-alarm fire last week that sent two firefighters and a bystander to the hospital with symptoms of heat exhaustion. All the tenants were able to escape the building, though a pet cat perished in the blaze.

Local officials determined the building was unsafe the next day, and ordered it destroyed.

Demolition began Wednesday at a longtime troubled landmark in East Springfield.

The Cornerstone Lounge on Page Boulevard has been an area riddled with crime in recent years and residents as well as city officials celebrated the news that it will finally be torn down.

"It's caused neighbors to move out, this building has caused neighbors to not get sleep at night," said Kathleen Brown, East Springfield neighborhood council president. "Neighbors have had to come and pick up trash and debris. They've had particularly foul language unfortunately there was even a murder that was related to this particular facility."

Brown says she's been fighting for this day for years.

"This is something people have been hoping for, people have been dreaming for, but never thought would happen," said Brown. "So, it's like a miracle."

The building was built back in 1924. In its day it was described as a wonderful community asset. But, in years since it has become a location known for its issues.

"There has been shootings, there's been deaths there, there's been a lot of drug dealings it was just the wrong clientele for this neighborhood," said Gilbert Perron, the East Springfield neighborhood council vice president .

The property was bought by Genden Auto Parts and once demolished will be used to help revitalize the area.

"Well we have a plan to put a parking lot in. Not just a paved asphalt area but green space around it, nice wrought-iron fence and it should add to the aesthetics to our adjacent building, the terrace and the library that's here," said John Lamoureux, who is the owner of Genden Auto Parts and the property in which the Cornerstone Lounge sits.

Demolition begins at Cornerstone Building in East Springfield

SANFORD, Fla.

Public housing in the Goldsboro area of Sanford has been vacant for about three years, since the Department of Housing and Urban Development found them to be in deplorable condition and relocated residents.

Demolition work on the Redding Gardens section is underway. Hundreds of people once populated that area. Redding Gardens is just one of several complexes that will be demolished.

Sanford resident Edna Gordon said she remembers when the now-abandoned buildings were converted to public housing decades ago.

She said she also remembers when HUD shut them down after Channel 9 Eyewitness News investigations found units with no heat, leaky roofs and in decay.

Gordon watched as the buildings were brought down. She said she will feel safer once the buildings are gone.

"If it's open it's more visible," said Gordon.

The 400-plus units of the Sanford Housing Authority will begin to come down on Aug. 22. That demolition will cost $1.5 million.

When those building are gone the city of Sanford will be left with a 47-acre empty lot.

Andrew Thomas, Sanford senior project manager, said leaving the 47 acres undeveloped would not be the ideal situation.

Demolition of abandoned Sanford public housing underway

Community Mercy Health Partners resumed demolition at its East High Street campus location this week, beginning with the former School of Nursing.

Demolition crews have been working on the campus since February, but are now beginning visible demolition, according to CMHP spokesperson Dave Lamb.

Im sure this is a relief for the general public who was wondering, Lamb said. The community has asked where we were with the construction. Work has been continuing, its just been behind the scenes.

Crews have been slowed due to asbestos removal in the buildings, Lamb said.

You dont want to shortchange that, Lamb said.

Lamb said hes unsure when the hospital building will be torn down.

Demolition is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Hospital representatives had previously estimated demolition would be completed in June. The demolition is expected to cost $3 million.

Community Hospital closed in November of 2011 on the same day the new downtown hospital, Springfield Regional Medical Center, opened.

The North Limestone Campus, also known as the former Mercy Medical Center, is expected to begin asbestos remediation this fall. Lamb said there is no timetable for when demolition could begin at the other hospital location.

It will be determined on the extent of the remediation of the asbestos, Lamb said. When we get in there, well have a better idea about the timeline.

Louisa Blackburn is living in the middle of a demolition site.

Most of the houses in her street have been razed to the ground, but her home is propped on either side by an abandoned, bricked-up, building.

The pensioner is among a handful of people still living in what little remains of this part of Soudan Street, in an area of south Belfast known locally as the Village.

The Village is undergoing a multi-million pound regeneration scheme, and hundreds of substandard homes have already been pulled down to make way for new, modern housing.

However, the area has long been the target of vandals, fly-tippers, metal thieves and so-called brick bandits, who it appears, are continuing to strip the demolition zone of anything they can sell.

As Louisa and her few remaining neighbours wait to be re-housed, rubble and rubbish is piled up outside their homes. Fires are being set in waste ground, just feet from occupied houses.

Even the granite kerb stones are disappearing from underneath their feet.

Several months ago, metal thieves ripped lead flashing from Louisa's roof, leaving her to deal with rainwater leaking into her kitchen.

Now, she believes copper is their new target. The pensioner said she has witnessed men setting fire to electrical cables right outside her home.
