HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -
The phones rang off the hook at South Florida-based roofing companies on Friday because of recent heavy rain.
At Paul Bange Roofing, they said they were three times busier than normal.
"We normally get about 20 to 30 calls a day," said owner Paul Bange. "Now, we are getting between 80 and 100."
Although it sounds like a good problem for a business, Bange explained that there are many repairs that they can't get to.
"It is frustrating because you may start a job and then the job is open and another customer expects you to be at their job the next day but you didn't finish the job the day before because of the rain," Bange said.
More work means buying more roofing materials, so staying on top of inventory is key and this kind of heavy rain also means a lot of emergency calls.
"If you are on the books with us and you have an emergency and it is getting really bad, we will come out and do a temporary until we can do the roof, but the best thing is a tarp," Bange said."If a roofer can't get to you right away and a tarp doesn't work for you, you can try some sort of sealant, like R-400,and if you spot a leak during a storm, the best advice is get a bucket and let it leak so you don't lose your ceiling."

Roofing material and construction equipment are at Canton Intermediate School. Town officials recently approved contracts for roof replacement work there and at the community center. (Ken Byron / July 19, 2013)
CANTON Two roof replacement jobs for municipal buildings have been approved and work on one has begun.
The board of selectmen approved contracts for replacing parts of the roofs at Canton Intermediate School and the community center when it met on July 11. This week, materials for the work at the intermediate school and construction equipment were at the school. Town Chief Administrative Officer Robert Skinner said on Friday that the school project is expected to be done by Aug. 22, in time for classes to start in the fall.
At the intermediate school, Silktown Roofing of Manchester was given the contract and it will be paid $367,905. Officials said that is within budget.
Roof work at the community center will cost $397,455, according to the contract that the selectmen approved and Imperial Company Inc. of Cromwell has been hired to do the job. According to minutes of the selectmen's July 11 meeting, Imperial was hired because the lowest bidder for the job could not provide the required level of insurance. But Skinner told the selectmen that the contract with Imperial is still within the budget allocated for the work.
Skinner said on Friday that the contract with Imperial has not been signed yet but that he expects work will start in the next few weeks.
Voters approved $3.23 million for roof replacement projects in a referendum held last November. In addition to the community center and the intermediate school, plans are to replace parts of the roofs at Cherry Brook Primary School and Canton High School.
Skinner said the plan is to do the work at Cherry Brook and the high school next summer. A contractor is in the middle of building a running track and playing field along with a new parking lot and driveway at the high school and Skinner said it would be unrealistic to do the roof project now as well.
Town officials anticipate that the state will reimburse the town for about 35 percent of the cost of the roof work at the two schools.

Business Review, after reviewing top local arboriculture sources, lists Rooted Tree Services as a leading source of EAB information affecting GTA communities and today announces the company's advisement to private residents of municipal Ash tree removal by-laws in wake of Toronto's removal plans announcement. GTA residents can find more information from an article published on the city's website, http://www.Toronto.ca (http://www.toronto.ca/trees/pdfs/EABPresentation.pdf,) posted July 1, 2013.
Infested Ash trees located on the portion of a homeowner`s property close to the street are known as street trees and are attributed to being a part of municipal property. These trees will be removed and replaced by the municipality at no cost to the homeowner. Backyard trees are private, as are trees on front lawns outside the street right-of-way. If an infested tree is privately owned, the homeowner is 100 per cent responsible for the removal costs of that tree since there are no city subsidies set in place to cover the cost of removal. "A tree infested by the EAB has a 100 per cent mortality rate and will begin to die within 2-6 months of infestation. If you are in need of a GTA tree removal company, Rooted Tree Services will be more than happy to inspect your suspected infested tree and provide you with a removal quote free of charge, says Peter Crawford of Rooted Tree Services. We will also obtain all the necessary municipality by-law permits to ensure that you are in compliance with all tree removal regulations and laws within your community.
If you suspect you may have an Ash tree infested with the EAB, first determine if the tree is a City-owned or privately owned tree. If you are unsure of ownership, call 3-1-1. Homeowners will be notified of tree removal and replacement planting by receiving a Notice of Tree Removal and Replacement Planting card. There are many streets within the infestation area that have Ash trees not yet showing signs of advanced decline. These trees are prioritized for removal next year.
