The first phase of an estimated $1 million-plus renovation of Marietta's 76-year-old city hall officially started on top of the building last week as workers with North Canton-based Buxton Roofing began a much-needed replacement of the facility's roof.
Construction work to remodel the building's interior is scheduled to follow in mid-to-late December.
"The contractor is wrapping up work on the parapet walls around the roof where we had some areas of leakage. And the roofing contractor is on site now, tearing off the existing rubberized membrane," said Jarrod Schultheisz, project manager for the city engineering department.
JASMINE ROGERS The Marietta Times Workers with North Canton-based Buxton Roofing are replacing the roof on Mariettas City Hall.
He said the old black roofing material-about 20 years old-will first be replaced with roof insulation that's tapered to allow better drainage, then a new roof membrane will be installed.
"The flat roof was not draining properly which caused rainwater to pond in some areas and leaks developed," Schultheisz said. "The new roof membrane is made of PVC and polyethylene with a woven fabric in between that makes it a much tougher material."
He also noted the new roofing material is white instead of black which helps with energy efficiency as it reflects more sunlight instead of absorbing it. The new roofing is also durable.
Timeline:
Roof replacement began last week and is expected to be completed by Aug. 22. Cost: $216,000.
Final design documents for the building's interior renovation are slated for completion by mid-September.

The minivan that crashed into a Homewood building and plunged into its basement early Tuesday destroyed Terrance Parker's remodeling plans.
Now, it's pretty much over, Parker said. The city condemned the building.
Parker said he started working on the building on North Lang Avenue and Idlewild Street last year with the goal of turning it into a convenience store.
There was a problem with funding, so we slowed up, Parker said. I've never been in this type of situation. I'm kind of losing hope, but I'm trying not to.
The minivan crashed through the boarded-up building and into the basement about 1:40 a.m., Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. No one from the vehicle was there when police arrived, but Zone 5 Lt. Reyne Kacsuta said officers later found two of the three people believed to have been in the vehicle, including a woman hospitalized with minor injuries.
The driver has not been found, Richard said. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
They'll be tearing it down in the morning, Parker said. It's a hazard, plus they have to get the van out of the basement.

Lack of action on pest control disappointing Environment Commissioner
Two years on from her report backing greater use of 1080 for pest control, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright has expressed her disappointment that little has changed.
The comments come as an update of the original report is released that assesses the response to the recommendations she made in 2011.
Dr Wright says time is running out for native species on the mainland.
There are three predators that are inflicting enormous damage on our native birds and plants possums, rats, and stoats. The only way we can control them over large areas is to use 1080. We are lucky to have it.
When I released my report two years ago I called for greater use of 1080 because I was extremely concerned about the future of kiwi and other native birds.
Currently the Department of Conservation is spending more on research into 1080 and its alternatives than it is on actually using it.
While Im happy this research is being done, I would like to see more money being spent on frontline pest control.
While I am heartened by the public support for a pest-free New Zealand there is no way that it could currently be achieved without 1080. I will continue to recommend its use is increased.

The only way to control predators inflicting "enormous damage" on New Zealand's native birds and plants is to use 1080, the Commissioner for the Environment says.
Two years on from her report backing greater use of 1080 for pest control, Dr Jan Wright has expressed her disappointment that little has changed.
Dr Wright recommended in June 2011 that controversial 1080 poison be used more often as means of controlling pests.
Every year, 3500 tonnes of 1080 poison is distributed to kill pests like possums, stoats and rats.
The use of the chemical has long been debated, with opponents claiming that it can end up in the food chain and aerial drops allow the bait to kill indiscriminately.
However, in a new report released today, Dr Wright says time is running out for native species on the mainland.
"There are three predators that are inflicting enormous damage on our native birds and plants - possums, rats, and stoats. The only way we can control them over large areas is to use 1080. We are lucky to have it," she said.

Lack of action on pest control 'disappointing' - Commissioner
Bulldozers have started clearing the first block of what eventually will be 13,400ha of new farming land near Kununurra.
Chief executive of Chinese-backed company Kimberley Agricultural Investment (KAI), Jian Zhong Yin said the beginning of land clearing was a major milestone for the company.
"This is actually the foundation for the whole of our development work here," Mr Yin told _WestBusiness _.
The company plans to invest about $700 million in the East Kimberley farming region over the next five years.
KAI general manager Jim Engelke said the company was looking to initially grow sorghum for ethanol production, with a long-term view to growing sugar if economies of scale could be reached to make a Kununurra processing mill profitable.
"We need scale in a sugar industry to make it viable, so we're talking some years before a mill," Mr Engelke said. "The smallest mill we want to build is a 2 million tonne mill, so in rough area that's about 20,000ha."
Mr Engelke said the company would look to the 14,000ha of existing Ord farmland and at future developments in the Northern Territory to expand potential sugar-growing land.
The first 500ha is expected to be planted next year, with sorghum, maize or chia the most likely choices. As part of the deal with the State Government, KAI must begin farming progressively as land is cleared.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the Ord land clearing showed northern Australia had a strong farming future.
"There are plenty of naysayers who say we shouldn't be developing the north of Australia, they probably need to come to Kununurra and see it actually happening," Mr Grylls said.
