TROY HARVEY/THE STAR Firefighters help clear debris from businesses that were flooded by a broken sprinkler head Monday morning in the 4500 block of Telephone Rd.
Major flooding at a commercial building in Ventura this morning was caused by a malfunctioning sprinkler system, officials said.
The sprinklers went off at one of the upper units of the building and the water had been flowing for hours before it was reported to the Ventura Fire Department, said Battalion Chief Doug Miser.
Firefighters responded to the building in the 4500 block of Telephone Road about 6:15 a.m.
The ceilings of numerous units in the building have collapsed, causing the area to be yellow tagged, Miser said.
There are a total of 12 businesses in the building, including a restaurant, cat hospital and a glass company.
Crews are on scene doing water evacuations and mitigating hazards, Miser said.
Were working with the building owners to save as much property as we can.
Prevention code and building and safety officials are on scene assessing the damage.

There was no shed in the backyard of the Royal Oak house that Todd and Kim Parker bought in spring 2012. Since storage space was a problem, they decided on a shed but with appearance a high priority.
What I was thinking was to get the cars into the garage, said Todd Parker, a creative design manager at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren. It seems like there are so many yard tools, kids toys, bikes and things like that, that some people dont even park in the garage anymore.
The Parkers yard has landscaped shrubbery and a hot tub built into a raised deck. They wanted their shed to complete the upscale look and chose an 8-by-10 structure sold and installed by Denver-based Tuff Shed.
It has a single-slope roof with dimensional shingles and a transom window above the door. The model is known as a pro studio.
George Bogaert, the sales consultant at the Royal Oak Tuff Shed office, said the shed of the type the Parkers bought uses 2-by-4 construction for the walls, and the components are prefabricated and assembled on-site. The cost is generally around $5,500.
We just start out with four walls, a floor and a door, then we go from there, Bogaert said. Most customers participate in the design.
Tuff Shed vice president of marketing Phil Worth said the trend toward more attractive sheds gained momentum on the West Coast, then began working its way east.
In Northern California, theyre kind of hemmed in from a square-footage perspective, and people almost started taking it as a challenge to see how few square feet they can live in. A lot of customers use our buildings for hobbies like woodworking or sewing, and some guys even make them into man caves with bars, poker tables and flat-screen TVs.
People often have a lot of gear if theyre hunters, fishermen, boaters or golfers, and they need a place to put everything. But the buildings can also serve as an outdoor office or even a wine cellar.
The Parkers have boys ages 11 and 13, so space is often in short supply at the home.

If you need a bout of house envy, theres no better place to go than Houzz, the increasingly popular platform for finding ideas for your home remodeling projects and the professional that can realize them. Today, however, the service is adding a bit of a reality check to these dreams. The company, which currently sees 14 million users every month, recently surveyed 100,000 homeowners in the U.S. about their projects. Its now surfacing this information on its site and in its mobile apps to give homeowners a better idea of what remodeling projects in their local areas typically cost.
For example, the tools show homeowners what a kitchen or media room remodel costs in their area. Besides the average, which wouldnt be all that useful, it also highlights the stats for the lower, middle and top third. Using its existing database, Houzz can also draw upon its huge database of envy-inducing photographs and prices for specific items. This way, for example, you can see what a certain kind of countertop will do to your budget, as well as the pros and cons of the different options, thanks to the growing number of how-to and style guides on the service.
For the time being, this tool is only available on the Houzz website. Its not available through its popular mobile apps, but the company tells me thats coming soon.
The data the company uses to power this tool, as Houzz co-founder Alon Cohen told me last week, is based on the largest survey ever done on remodeling activity. The company, he said, decided to give this information back to the community. Cohen believes it will help homeowners budget their projects.
Currently, the survey shows, half of the homeowners who start these kinds of projects dont actually set a budget or go over budget.In addition, the tool should also help the companys network of more than 230,000 professionals get a better idea of what they can charge and show homeowners how their rates compare to the average.
Houzz plans to update the data over time.
