The Designer of the Year Awards recognize outstanding achievement in residential interior design among Interior Design Society members across the nation. Barnecut has also been honored by the Central Washington Home Builders Tour of Homes and was a Reader's Choice award Best of the Northwest Silver Winner last year.
The project that won an award from the Interior Design Society was a speculative remodel for a Seattle firm that flips homes in the $500,000 to $1 million range. The project house was a dated 1950s-era home that had been trashed by the previous occupants.
"The existing floor plan presented fundamental challenges and was in much need of an up-to-date final design," she said.
Barnecut was chosen for the job based on her reputation as an interior designer and her willingness to get the job done quickly. She completed all of the layout drawings, color palettes and plans for the finishes within two weeks.
Barnecut really enjoyed this finished kitchen, she explained, because, although it was in a high-end home, it had elements that people could do in their own homes on a tighter budget. The old kitchen was gutted and a wall removed to offer a more open feeling. The original hardwood flooring was salvaged, but the cabinets had to be replaced and a kitchen island was added.
The finished kitchen caters to today's lifestyle with a much more modern feel, Barnecut said. She offers pictures of the completed work, along with other before-and-after photos, on her Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/tannabydesigninteriors, and website, http://www.tannabydesign.com.
Barnecut has been an interior designer for more than 20 years, although her business is officially just reaching its seventh year. She has been interested in interior design all her life but was advised against it as a career due to financial considerations. Instead, she earned a business degree and spent 20 years working as division director of marketing for a staffing agency and dabbling in interior design on the side.
"That was back at a time when Microsoft was hitting and there was a lot of 'young money' with condos downtown. All of a sudden it had turned into lucrative moonlighting and I didn't have time for anything else," Barnecut said.

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C., July 2, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Window World, Inc.(R), America's largest replacement window and home remodeling company, volunteered their corporate aircraft July 2 to fly wounded Navy veteran Jeremiah "Doc" Harrold and his family from his hometown of North Wilkesboro, N.C. to Nantucket, Mass. to spend Independence Day with Holidays for Heroes. The flight was organized by Veterans Airlift Command (VAC), a non-profit that facilitates free travel for wounded warriors and their families for compassionate purposes. This will be Window World's 45th mission with VAC since the partnership began in 2008.
A photo accompanying this release is available at http://www.globenewswire.com/newsroom/prs/?pkgid=19688
Harrold, a hospital corpsman, was wounded multiple times while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. His last injury was May of 2009, when he suffered injuries to his right leg and spinal cord, in addition to suffering a traumatic brain injury. "I do several wounded warrior trips a year," said Harrold. "This will be the first chance for my family to meet other wounded warriors and get to know them."
Holidays for Heroes is a non-profit organization that seeks to honor the services of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan through complimentary, all-inclusive vacations in Nantucket. Harrold will be traveling with his wife, mother, and five children ages 1 -- 12. They will enjoy dinners, accommodations on the beach and a vacation during which they can relax and connect with other veterans and their families.
This was Window World's first mission directly from their headquarters in North Wilkesboro, so the entire Window World corporate staff, including the president, CEO and board of directors, was at the airport to provide a heartfelt sendoff for the hometown Harrold family and Navy veteran. "We are grateful for Jeremiah's service, and it was so nice to meet him and his lovely family in person," said Tammy Whitworth, Window World Chairman and CEO. "Partnering with the VAC is incredibly rewarding. This is the 45th mission that we've sponsored, and we will continue to sponsor the program because we want to make a difference in the lives of these veterans."

GRANITE QUARRY Siding with neighborhood opposition, the Granite Quarry Board of Aldermen voted Monday night against a rezoning request involving the quarry site off Balfour Quarry Road.
At least a half dozen residents of the area said they were against the rezoning request, which asked that the whole site be classified as heavy-industrial.
The current zoning is partly heavy-industrial, but mostly neighborhood business. The quarry has been closed for many years.
Ken Miller, representing Granite Realty, made the rezoning request.
The zoning case came to aldermen from the Granite Quarry Planning Board, which recommended denial. The planners said denying the request was in the best interest of the surrounding, residential property owners.
Rezoning may negatively affect and possibly devalue the surrounding properties with no clear, designated use of the land in mind by the rezoning applicant, the recommendation said.
Mayor Pro Tem Bill Feather and Aldermen Jim LaFevers and Eloise Peeler voted to support the Planning Boards recommendation.
In another zoning matter, aldermen voted for a couple of changes in the towns sign ordinance in connection to banners and the internal illumination of signs.
Businesses may use a banner to advertise a special sale or feature, providing it hangs securely against a wall, or it can be freestanding, if secure.

A recently released Remodeling Magazines Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report for 2013 notes that one of the most cost-effective improvements a homeowner can make has little to do with the actual house.
In Jacksonville, a 16-by-20-foot mid-range wood deck addition estimated at $7,900 ranked among the highest values of remodeling cost vs. resale value, according to the report. On average, homeowners adding a wood deck to their backyards recouped nearly 75 percent of the job cost in resale value, outranked only by a steel entry door replacement (93.7 percent), garage door replacement (83.6 percent), fiber-cement siding replacement (83.1 percent) and an attic bedroom remodel (79.3 percent). A deck addition of the same size made from composite materials costing around $13,900 pulled in 70 percent of its original cost in reselling.
I would say they add quite a bit of value to a home. If youve got an okay-looking home and a backyard thats a mess, its going to be tough to sell. But if youve got an okay-looking home and cool place to hang out and have a party, its going to attract buyers, said Derrick Pratt, president and owner of Jacksonville-based Pratt Custom Services. The family company, founded in 2005 by Pratt, specializes in outdoor woodscapes and custom carpentry.
A deck addition was also ranked nationally among the five best cost vs. value home remodels by US News.
The mid-range 16-by-20-foot deck featured in the report is constructed from pressure-treated wood in a simple linear pattern that allows for a built-in bench, planter and a set of three stair steps. It also features supports from 4 x 4 posts anchored to concrete piers.
Phyllis Staines, a broker associate with RE/MAX Coastal Real Estate, once served as a Realtor source for the report, which surveys real estate agents in the area to arrive at its conclusions. She said that, among the more expected siding, windows and roof updates, decks seem to score high in cost vs. value.
I can tell you that decks always come up in these surveys. Interestingly enough, I just did a home inspection with a deck, said Staines, who notes that decks are not as common on the First Coast as some might think. Instead, she sees a lot of lanais, screened and covered porches and Florida rooms.
Because this is such a beach community, decks could describe walkways leading to the water, noted Staines, who sells many waterway and coastal homes.
Pratt says that a poured concrete patio can make a good choice for a homeowner who wants to maximize an outdoor living area. Adding a pergola, which his business custom-makes, he says, can make a patio more eye-catching.
Pratt has noticed that the staycation, made popular by the recession, has influenced some homeowners to revamp the outdoor areas of their property.
