CLERMONT The demolition of Jenkins Auditorium is underway and is set to finish next week, according to city officials.

So far, crews have demolished the south wall and are making their way through the interior of the building. The demolition, originally scheduled to start June 4, was delayed a day because of asbestos issues. However, as of Tuesday, the asbestos has been cleared out and the demolition is scheduled to end June 21.

George Jenkins, founder of Publix, donated the building to the city in 1965. Since then, it has served as a venue for civic and South Lake Chamber of Commerce events. A green space will be landscaped in its place with a plaque honoring Jenkins' donation.

The auditorium was replaced by the 11,354-square-foot Clermont Community Center in April.

The clanging sound of metal scraping against metal rang through the air on River Road last week as demolition of the Simkins Mill began.

Per a Baltimore County razing permit issued on May 7, Simkins Industries and the company's locally contracted demolition company, A2Z Environmental Group, has 150 days to raze the vacant paper mill of more than 70,000 square feet at the intersection of River Road and Old Thistle Road in western Catonsville, near the Howard County border.

"I'm happy to see that this is moving forward," said 1st District Councilman Tom Quirk. "Hopefully, the property itself gets absorbed back into the state park system."

The project comes as part of Maryland Department of the Environment's Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides benefits to companies, including clarification of liability provisions, for cleaning up their properties.

According to a fact sheet from MDE, "A Phase II ESA (Environmental Site Assessment) completed in May 2011 included the collection of soil, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas samples from the power plant area, mill building area, landfill area and other areas of the property.

"The samples identified the presence of lead in the soils near the mill building and power plant building and chlorinated solvents in the soil gas near the power plant building," the fact sheet read.

Jay Apperson, a spokesman for MDE, said the decision to demolish the building was a choice made by Simkins and the company must submit a plan for removing the contaminated soil.

"You can remove things above the soil, but not the soil, without this final response action plan," he said.

More information regarding the future of the site will be available once that plan is submitted.

For now, Quirk said he hopes the land will eventually become part of the neighboring Patapsco Valley State Park, perhaps used to add parking to the area.

WEST PHILADELPHIA - June 11, 2013 (WPVI) -- The City of Philadelphia is starting to crack down on demolition work in the wake of last week's deadly building collapse that claimed six lives.

The demolition of a 3-story Victorian home in Southwest Philadelphia abruptly stopped after the city says it discovered issues with the tear-down.

L&I has inspected 300 demolition sites since Thursday. 97 were active.

From Southwest to North Philadelphia, the department has stopped work at 5 sites for problems like expired insurance and licenses.

Inspectors say the walls at a site at 47th and Chester weren't braced properly, just like the walls of the building at 22nd and Market Streets which came down, killing 6 people, injuring 13.

"It's just a shame that building had to fall before they got deep into this," said Darnell Johnson of Southwest Philadelphia.

L&I also says it will increase oversight of private demolition contractors through heightened permitting and inspection requirements.

Earlier in the day Action News was at a demolition site on North 63rd Street in West Philadelphia where we found unsupported walls and a cluttered mess.

We confirmed Center City building collapse suspect Sean Benschop worked on the project.

After our repeated calls to City Hall, an inspector showed up and a contractor arrived to take down those unstable walls.
