On Monday the Cathlamet Town Council was joined by representatives from Port District 1, the countys building and planning department, Chamber of Commerce, fire department and River Mile 38 to deliberate whether a current fire sprinkler ordinance is restricting economic growth.

Other items on the agenda included a cost update to the Columbia Street waterline project which required the replacement of malfunctioning couplings; the project engineer is expected to investigate whether costs can be covered by the installers and/or manufacturers. The council passed a motion to send 2% of their state liquor profits and excess tax revenue to fund county substance use disorder programs as a part of a state mandate. A motion was passed to enter into an agreement with Ecological Land Services (ELS) to repair the town dock despite worry about the scope and bottom line costs of the project; the town attorney will follow up with ELS to gain clarity.

The council passed separate motions to (1) increase in-town and out-of-town sewer rates by 1.6% effective this December and (2) increase the regular property tax levy by 1%. Property owners tax would not increase by 1% because their rates are based on assessed values.

Fire sprinkler ordinance

River Mile 38 Brewery Co. owner Rex Czuba appeared at the town council meeting to present his case for repealing a fire sprinkler ordinance which requires the construction of new commercial buildings of 1,500 square feet or more to install automatic sprinkler systems. Estimates for installing a sprinkler system range between $20 - $90,000.

Washington state requires commercial spaces used for serving food and beverages to install automatic sprinkler systems if they exceed 5,000 square feet.

According to a letter from Czuba to the councilmembers, the River Mile 38 team is planning to construct a 2,400 square foot taproom and restaurant located in the southwest corner of the Elochoman Marina. The new facility would build upon the existing operation through additional employment opportunities, incentivising local tourism, and providing one of the only waterfront restaurants between Kalama and the coast.

Oh, and more beer.

Given that we have outgrown our current capacity for both brewing and serving our customers, we have joined forces with the port to drive more economic development," he said. "We want to build something that the town can be proud of, to invest in the people and products that make Cathlamet a great place to work and live in.

Despite River Mile 38s effort to bring more beer and tourism into town, the fire sprinkler ordinance and other potential fire hazards are barriers to even applying for a building permit. Fire Chief Vernon Barton agreed that the ordinance was on the restrictive side but said a complete overhaul wouldnt be necessary.

No matter what size the structure, you need fire protection. To just drop the ordinance would be a mistake, Barton cautioned.

The fire chief was asked to review Czubas plans for the new facility and produce an assessment which would be presented at the next council meeting. The presentation will help inform the towns decision to accommodate the development.

Among the large number of virtual attendees were representatives who advised on River Mile 38s new facility including Wahkiakum County Building Inspector Dave Hicks. He expressed a more real concern for downtowns tightly packed buildings without sprinkler systems. He continued to highlight the many fire and safety conscious features of the proposed facility which he believed would supersede the need for an expensive sprinkler system.

What we have is a metal container building that is isolated next to the river, Hicks illustrated. Why is Cathlamet restricting all new construction at 3,500 feet less than the rest of the world?

A 20-year-old man from Baxter Springs, Kansas, waived a preliminary hearing this week on charges stemming from a brief theft and arson spree the night of April 24-25 in Joplin.

Bridger A. Skye waived the hearing Thursday in Jasper County Circuit Court on felony counts of arson, burglary, stealing, property damage and knowingly burning or exploding. Associate Judge Joe Hensley set Skye's initial appearance in a trial division of the court on Dec. 2.

The spree began about 10 p.m. on April 24 with the setting on fire of a Ford Focus in the 800 block of South Vermont Avenue. A witness at the scene identified Skye as the culprit, and police were looking for him when they began receiving reports of thefts from vehicles taking place nearby in the 1100 block of East Seventh Street.

Officers swarmed the area but did not spot Skye and arrest him until shortly before 2 a.m. on April 25. Some of the items taken in the vehicle break-ins credit cards, a driver's license, an iPhone and a pair of pearl and diamond earrings purportedly were found in his possession when he was taken into custody, along with a cooler and drinks that police subsequently determined had been taken in a break-in at the offices of the TelePerformance call center in the Joplin Plaza at 1117 E. Seventh St.

During the course of his arrest, officers heard a fire alarm sounding in the strip mall and firefighters were called to the scene to put out a fire inside the call center that had triggered the building's fire suppression sprinkler system. Firefighters found three places where fires had been set prior to being put out by the sprinklers. The fire destroyed several computers and monitors belonging to the business, with property damage initially estimated at $50,000.

A homes biggest symbol of the holiday season, the Christmas tree, can also be a homes biggest fire risk, and the folks who fight those fires want people to be aware.

The New Hampshire State Fire Marshals Office hosted a Christmas tree burn at the Fire and EMS Academy in Concord on Wednesday, showing how quickly a tree can burst into flames and how home sprinkler systems can help.

The demonstration, held in a special trailer, used artificial trees to make the point that avoiding a natural tree doesnt avoid fire risk.

The trailer had one room with a typical home sprinkler system, which put out the tree fire in less than a minute. The other tree burned so quickly that it engulfed the entire room before the blaze could be contained by firefighters.

The electrical Safety Foundation says that an average of 260 houses burn in the United States each year because Christmas trees catch on fire, often as the result of an electrical problem, resulting in 12 deaths, 24 injuries and $16.4 million in property damage.

Recently the counseling department has had many different union trade departments coming to visit. It has been a great opportunity to explore other options than college for many of the kids who have attended the meetings.

First, the Local 134 Electricians Union came to visit. While it drew a relatively small group of interested students, those attending got a first glimpse of alternatives to college.

Next a group of students visited the sprinkler fitter training center. We watched a training video, after which the president of the union, Rich Miller, talked to us and answered many of our questions.

I felt it was a great experience to be able to see what the sprinkler fitters do. Miller proceeded to walk us around the bright, white training facility, and they even set off a sprinkler system chain, to show us how all the pipes connect, and how the system of events is set in motion.

The following week, a representative of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Mr. Alex Winters, came to campus to discuss the different skill sets you would learn as a a part of the stationary engineers. To my surprise, unlike some of the other trades, you will have a foot in the door to almost every other type of union work.

According to Winters, As a stationary engineer youll end up learning parts of carpentry, electric, metal work, plumbing, A/C duct work. It really is a jack of all trades.

MC alum Alex Asta 12, who happens to be my brother, was happy to hear that current students were presented with these alternative career possibilities.

If they had done that when I was there, I would have surely gone straight into carpentry. It is cool that they are showing you guys that there are more options out there than just college.

Opening the door to the future: union work - The Caravan

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley believes arson isthe cause of a fire that occurredin the Walmart store in North Bay this evening (Friday).

He says the call came in around 9:45p.m. Fire crews along with the sprinkler system that was triggered, were able to put out the fire quickly. No one was injured.

"When we got there we found, what we believe to be, a deliberately set fire in the clothing section," Whiteley told BayToday.

"Fire crews, with the help of the building's suppression system, got the fire out very quickly. However, there appears to be some extensive damage with the smoke and the water. We are waiting to see if the health unit is going to respond because of the food in there."

A photo of smoke coming out of a clothing rack at Walmart started to circulate Friday evening.The store was evacuated and some staff members were sent home.

Ontario's Fire Marshall is expected to arriveSaturday morning to assist the Fire Department and the police with the investigation.

"We have the Fire Marshall's office attending in the morning to do an investigation with us and the police.

"Clothing just does not start on fire by itself," said Whiteley.

Whiteley says it is too early to give a damage estimate buthe believes the smoke and water damage is extensive in the large department store.

And he anticipates the store will be closed for the next few days.

The fire chief is also concerned becausethere has been a recent rash of Walmart fires across the province.

Lindsay also used the spaces as a kind of personal lookbook to exhibit the unique ways in which you can apply her lively patterns to the home. Cruising Lindsays Instagram feed, youll find images of the townhouse, demonstrating how to use color and graphics to compose a layered, dynamic space.

In the home, Jill applied pattern in nontraditional ways to highlight architectural features, create movement, and transform awkward nooks into dramatic vignettes, so rooms didnt feel homogenous. You have to think outside the box. It can be used in so many ways. Lindsay says of pattern. You can wallpaper a room in its entirety, but you dont want to wallpaper every room in its entirety.

In the dining room, a vintage credenza topped with Mr. Brown lamps is flanked by vintage chairs from interior designer Kelly Wearstler's Beverly Hills home. Lindsay created a gallery wall to highlight some of her favorite pieces by artists Holly Addi, Addie Chapin, Susan Carter Hall, and Angela Chrusciaki Blehm. That gallery wall went through many iterations, she says. Its about finding the right place for them and creating the right tension between the art.

The starting point for the dining room was Benjamin Moore Black Berry walls. The deep blue-black provided a dramatic backdrop that allowed patterns to leap off the walls, ceiling, and floor. Lindsays Navy White Grasscloth was used to create a faux tray ceiling accented with Farrow & Ball Calamine paint. Jill pumped up the volume in the dining room with the artists Blue Wool Silk Rug and Porter Teleo draperies, Oly Studio dining chairs, a Mr. Brown London honed Carrara marble table, a Julian Chichester light fixture, and a mirror by Made Goods.

In the dining room, wallpaper is encased with molding to create a faux tray ceiling. Set behind glass, wallpaper is used as backsplash on the wet bar. And behind the bed in the primary suite, a vibrant pattern is framed like artwork on the wall.

Walls coated in a soothing Benjamin Moore Gibraltar Cliffs pair well with Lindsays blue and purple Caribbean Grasscloth wall covering. The wallpaper over the bed is the same color as the walls, but just a little touch of pattern, Jill says. The painted photographs are by artist Allison Hobbs. The Room & Board Architecture Bed is topped with Kelly Wearstler blue pillows, a black-and-white Schumacher bolster, and a Rebecca Atwood blanket. Custom nightstands are topped with Kelly Wearstler lamps.

During the renovation, a closet was created for Thomas off the main bedroom entrance. To make the cumbersome space work aesthetically, a hidden door was built into the board and batten, and neighboring walls were covered in one of Lindsays murals. The artist recently released a line of Art Decoinspired mural wall coverings; this one is dubbed Jill to pay homage to the Arkansas interior designer.

In the powder room, a soothing blue Indigo Ocean Alta Non-Woven wallpaper by Lindsay sets a calming tone. A custom vanity is bejeweled in Nest Studio pulls, and Circa Lighting sconces flank a custom mirror.

Since the duo was heavy-handed with prints, they created balance with visual voids so spaces dont feel overwhelming: a calming yin to the Technicolor yang. These interludes come in the form of neutral furnishings; walls cloaked in soothing hues or covered in Venetian plaster; and clean, uncluttered embellishments.

With the home dressed top to bottom in pattern, the eye is drawn up to the ceiling, down to the floor, and from one room to the next. You cant help but follow the chromatic breadcrumb trail.

A leak led to an unplanned kitchen renovation. Floors were refinished in Rubio, which gave the wood a contemporary matte finish. Lindsay originally wanted to paint the cabinets oxblood red, but after happening across Farrow & Ball's Bancha green, she changed her plans. I immediately felt like that was the right color, and it just brought nature in, she says. The leather and brass stools are by Noir.

Green from the kitchen cabinets continues into the breakfast nook. The banquette is topped it with cushions upholstered in Lindsays Onyx Belgian Linen. An Eero Saarinen tulip table is paired with Noir chairs; a framed peacock feather and artwork by Catherine Booker Jones hang on the wall.
