In July 2015, Random House rushed to release Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates epistolary book written to his then-15-year-old son, Samori, as Americans struggled to find higher ground after a white supremacist murdered nine Black churchgoers at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, that June.

Saturday, the screen adaptation of this book-length letter arrives on HBO following a summer of familiar sorrow, anguish and unrest. Its director, Apollo Theater executive producer Kamilah Forbes, filmed the 80-minute television poem in August, when the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor were weighing heavily on the national consciousness. (Forbes also directed a 2018 performance of Between the World and Me for the Apollo stage, and shes also co-producing a feature film adaptation of Coates novel The Water Dancer alongside Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitts Plan B.)

Forbes employs tight shots that fill the frame with the faces of actors Joe Morton, Yara Shahidi, Winfrey, Janet Mock, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Wendell Pierce, Phylicia Rashad, Jharrel Jerome and Mj Rodriguez. As such, the adaptation relies heavily on the chops of the artists delivering Coates words, who are spliced together with archival footage and photographs and original music by Jason Moran, the John F. Kennedy Centers artistic director for jazz. Its not a competition, but Ali has everyone licked, in part because his gentle, deep-voiced presence is paired with the most romantic part of the book, when Coates talks about meeting Samoris mother, Kenyatta, at Howard University, the place that shaped him. This girl revealed, that soft or hard, love was an act of heroism, Coates wrote.

An exception to the format is the appearance of Howard alumnus Susan Kelechi Watson, who Forbes, also a Howard alum, filmed on the famous Yard at the Washington school as she extolled the many possibilities of Blackness, freedom and love that Coates writes about there. I mention those who are associated with Howard because its such a big part of the text, of Coates life, of his worldview. Though Between the World and Me is addressed to Samori, it is just as much a love letter to Howard as anything else.

I wondered if Between the World and Me would have been better suited for a 2021, postvaccine production, and I realized that Id taken it for granted that the work would hold because in a year or two or three, the odds are high that well be mourning the loss of someone else whose life was cut short simply because they are Black. The art holds because the contempt for Black agency cannot be erased in a matter of months, and the fatal consequences of such contempt occur with such regularity. Between the World and Me is, in part, a snapshot of the self-realization that Coates experienced when Howard student Prince Jones was killed by an undercover Prince Georges County, Maryland, police officer in September 2000. The names didnt stop after Jones death. Instead, they accumulated.

But Between the World and Me is here now, and though its marked with the scars of 2020, it also carries a Black generational hallmark. It is a work sprung from the minds of Generation X artists who came of age with Def Poetry Jam, which aired on HBO from 2002 to 2007. Theres a reason for that: Forbes was a producer on the show.

The film expands to include Black women and girls in its address, an update that recalls the most pointed criticism of Coates book, written by Howard alum Shani O. Hilton for BuzzFeed, adding to my daughter to to my son. Its an admirable gesture, though, without further additions to the text, the effect magnifies Hiltons original point, which is that the Black male experience is too often regarded as a universal Black experience. Nevertheless, Between the World and Me remains a powerful, timeless work, just as much as James Baldwins A Letter to My Nephew. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching chapter in a centurieslong book of struggle, as articulated by a son of The Mecca.

HBOs adaptation of Between the World and Me is sadly still timely - The Undefeated

Carmen and Mary Siciliano started married life in a one-room apartment during World War II. They ended it 76 years later in a fifth-floor hospital room they shared with COVID-19.

Carmen, 98, died at 10:48 a.m. Thursday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, six days after he was given a bed next to Mary, who was diagnosed with the coronavirus first. Mary, still recovering, moved Friday into a skilled nursing facility in Batavia, say their daughters, Joyce Siciliano Andringa of Aurora and Gail Siciliano Grazian of Naperville.

Mary's bed was pushed close enough before Carmen's death for her to touch her husband's arm as they listened to a recording of Nat King Cole singing their favorites such as "Autumn Leaves" and "Unforgettable."

"We asked if she wanted to be in the same room holding my dad's hand when he goes to heaven, and she said yes," says Gail, who says her father always wanted to take care of her mother. "We told him we were going to take care of her from now on."

The couple's love and commitment to each other inspired doctors, nurses and other staff members at Good Samaritan. Hospital rooms are designated for single patients but the family thought it would help if Carmen and Mary could be in adjoining beds in the same room of the respiratory isolation unit.

"Our physicians also thought that was a great idea," says nurse Rene Scheier, interim manager of the Clinical Resource Unit at Good Samaritan. "It was set up perfectly for them."

They even made room for Carmen's World War II hat that he wore until his death, foam boards filled with photographs from their life together, and a CD player.

"It's important for us to provide holistic care," Scheier says. "We could see how important this was for the entire Siciliano family. This is a perfect example of the type of compassion our team members have for our patients at Good Sam."

Mary Monstere was just 14 when she left her family's farm and her nine siblings in Louisiana to babysit for her older brother's family on Chicago's South Side, across the street from where Carmen Siciliano lived with his parents and nine siblings.

"My parents were farmers, and when I graduated eighth grade, I asked, 'Can I go to high school?'" Mary explained. "And they said, 'No. We have to eat.'"

After each day of classes at Parker High School in Chicago, Carmen would take a train downtown for a job unloading mail bags from trains onto trucks. He quit high school to take a better-paying job cutting the heads and legs off chickens for Campbell Soup Co.

Their first date was on Mary's 15th birthday, when Carmen took her downtown to see the movie "Sergeant York." The five-year age difference didn't bother Mary, whose mother was married at age 13 in Italy.

Once they started dating, World War II was the only thing that kept them apart. Even then, Carmen, who enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, wrote a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Monstere asking for their daughter's hand in marriage. Carmen also persuaded his captain to give him a two-week leave so he could wed Mary on Aug. 5, 1944. Mary was 17. Carmen was 22.

During the war, Mary lied about her age to get a job winding wire coils in a factory where an older brother worked. She and Carmen wrote each other lovely letters in spite of Carmen's gruesome duty handling the casualties of war. "All the dead bodies would come in, and we'd set them up so they could be brought back here," Carmen said.

He served the remainder of his military service as an X-ray technician in Fort Sheridan, and the newlyweds settled into domestic life without much money.

"We would wait until the stores closed, then we went window shopping," Carmen said. They raised their son, Frank, who died in 2016, and daughters Joyce and Gail in the south suburb of Dolton. An excellent gymnast and diver in high school, Carmen remained in great shape. He made a habit of performing handstands on the hood of every car he owned and once did an impromptu handstand on the ledge of Hoover Dam that almost got him arrested.

He made his living as a painter. He supervised a crew painting the Prudential Building, with the highest roof in Chicago at the time, and spent time every year at Wrigley Field, where "I painted the whole place," he said.

At the couple's 75th anniversary party in 2019, they gave a couple of tips for a happy marriage

"We never went to bed angry," Mary said.

"We always kissed before going to bed," Carmen added. Then he played "Happy Anniversary" on his harmonica -- but only after removing the dentures from his mouth and handing them to Mary, who clearly had played that part before. He also played taps every Veterans Day, until the one the day before he died.

During the pandemic, their daughters and other family members generally had to gather on a patio and shout up to Carmen and Mary on the second-floor balcony at Heritage Woods assisted living facility in Batavia, where they lived.

In August, the couple made a trip to Joyce's house, where they got haircuts in the garage, and Joyce gave them both manicures and pedicures. The last time the family got to be with the couple in person was at a socially distanced gender-reveal party in September outside Heritage Woods. That's when they found out their grandson Jayson and Ninnette Nofzinger would be parents of a boy due in January 2021, when Carmen would have turned 99.

The last time the daughters saw their parents was on a Zoom call to show them photos of the family's newest additions -- twin granddaughters born on Halloween, the couple's third and fourth great-grandchildren. Carmen, who is legally blind, held the image up to his face.

"My mom wants to get her hands on those babies," Gail says.

"My dad has been ready to go," Joyce says, explaining how Carmen used to blame his daughters and wife for keeping him alive too long. When he planned his funeral years ago, Carmen told his wife, "If you die before me, I'll kill you," and joked, "Don't bury me in the smoking section."

On the first phone call with the daughters after Carmen died, Mary cried. But they all realize the couple had a pretty amazing run. The couple shared everything, but mostly love. Even at the end

"God was on our shoulder guiding this journey," Gail says.

The "angels" who helped along the way ease the pain.

"They had a great life," Joyce says of her parents. "People need to hear wonderful stories of love and hope."

The only Black person to be elected to office in Ellis County, Texas this year is questioning how he became notonly the only person left without a private office during the buildings reshuffling, but also made to sit next to an archway that used to house a segregated water fountain.After the reshuffling occurred, Texas Constable Curtis Polk Jr. said he found himself seated next to an archway that used to house a colored only water fountain. The area still has a sign up thatreads negroes.

I understand that it was part of the history of this courthouse, but I just feel its another disgrace for me to have to see it daily, Polk said, according to KTVT.

This comes as Ellis County embarked on a plan to install a new courtroom, which meant reshuffling offices in the building.

Despite every other elected official in the county receiving their own private office, Polk ended up in the basement, with his filing cabinets placed in a public stairwell. He also shares an office with two sheriffs deputies who guard the office.

I felt pretty upset, he said. I have documents that dont need to be accessible to the public.

Outside his shared space is an archway that once included a segregated water fountain that Black people were barred from using. As of Tuesday afternoon, the word negroes was crossed out in spray paint, yet still visible.

But Polk refuses to let the signs get to him. I have a duty to fulfill, he said.

I am saddened Constable Polk was hurt by this office relocation process. That was not the intent, Ellis County Judge Todd Little said in a video statement recorded under the arch. He said there was no political or racial motivation behind the move and added that the move was temporary and they will look for more appropriate office space.

A Los Angeles womans idea for a simple food giveaway is a staple of one South L.A. community.Adrienne Wilsons cheerful face greets volunteers every Friday at Norman O. Houston Park in South Los Angeles.

We collect gleaned produce from different agencies around Los Angeles and we bring it to South Central L.A. and we give it away.Thats free and it gives healthy and delicious food to people who need it the most, Wilson said to Atlanta Black Star in a recent interview. I did not think that this would become as big as its become now.

This food giveaway, which Wilson started in April is just one part of the nonprofit she founded called Feed Our Soul. Feed Our Soul, we are a restorative organization, so we focus on closing the gap on bringing access to fresh and organic foods to people in South Los Angeles and in urban neighborhoods, Wilson said.

COVID-19 hit, it was such a drastic change for all of the communities here in South Central, so I decided to hit up some of the farmers and gardeners and community organizations that I work with and glean food that wasnt able to come to the supermarkets or farmers markets, but they wanted to give the food away because it was going to go bad.

A chef by trade, Wilson brought her passion to Feed Our Soul in other ways as well.

Ive been working in the hospitality industry for about 12 years now, and I really wanted to learn how to grow my own food, but also teach people how to cook the food they were growing, Wilson said.So Feed Our Soul has a curriculum where we install hydroponic farms and gardens into schools, churches and community centers, and then we teach through educational workshops how to grow from that hydroponic garden as well as cook from it. So we also teach nutritional literacy, environmental science and food entrepreneurship.

Hydroponic gardening is essentially soilless gardening, Wilson explains.Plants are grown strictly from water and direct air and sunlight.

There are these towers that have a reservoir usually that are on the bottom, and it has a timer in there that shoots up water just like in a fountain, Wilson explains.Then it trickles down, creating an automatic irrigation system that feeds all of your plants. Then the water then falls back into the reservoir and is recirculated.

Wilson believes this is the solution to the food desert crisis.It is 100 percent sustainable and uses 90 percent less water and 90 percent less land than traditional agriculture. If we were able to install hydroponic farms or even small hydroponic greenhouse gardens in South Los Angeles, then were able to feed so many people with fresh, organic, local produce. I believe hydroponics farms are the complete solution to our food desert crisis, she said.

The food from the hydroponic gardens, especially herbs like basil, mint and oregano are sometimes part of the Friday giveaway, as well as rich tomatoes, avocados, bananas and peppers.The giveaway is especially important as the holidays approach.

What this means for the holidays is that people can relax. They dont have to wait and stand in line at the store and they can get as much food as they like for their families so they can have a relaxed, grateful and thankful Thanksgiving, Wilson said.

But the recipients of the food arent the only souls being fed.The volunteers are big fans of this effort. They are doing a great job, said Khalid Abdulrahman, a regular volunteer. I enjoy coming over to help them because of the work they do. Im hoping I can get some of the same blessings theyre getting, but they should be blessed for what theyre doing, he added.

Meanwhile, Wilson is happy the small seeds she planted have moved mountains. I did not plan it further than lets just pick up food and bring it to this park, and it has grown and grown and grown every week, and Im so proud.

Now that personal computers have been a part of everyday life for about 30 years, computer viruses aren't as mysterious as they once were. Simply put, a virus is a kind of malware that has the ability to replicate itself. Once activated, it can install itself on a computer, infecting the PC and enabling the virus to continue to spread to other computers.

Depending upon its payload, the virus can have no other effect on the PC other than copying itself, or it can be designed to cause a wide variety of damages anything from holding the files on the computer for ransom (this is called ransomware) to deleting files, crippling Windows, or turning the computer into a resource for hackers to conduct distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Viruses have been around for decades (the first virus was created in 1971) and is so synonymous with the concept of malware that some people refer to any malware as a virus. That's not really true there are many kinds of malware, and viruses are just one.

Unlike other kinds of malware, a virus lies dormant until it's activated it's unable to execute itself on its own. (This is in contrast to a worm, for example, which can execute on its own with no human intervention. That means you might accidentally download a virus to your PC, but it won't do anything until you run the file or open the document it's embedded in.

At that time, the virus' code is activated, it can execute its payload, which might include stealing passwords, emailing itself to the contacts in your address book, or taking over your PC in a ransom attack.

There are a number of different kinds of viruses you can be infected with. While this might seem unimportant why should it matter since you're already infected it's important to know since each virus can affect your PC differently. Here are the most common varieties:

The symptoms of a computer virus can vary dramatically because not all viruses are engineered to do the same thing. But if you are concerned you are infected with a virus, here are some things to watch for:

If your PC runs much more slowly than it used to, a virus can be using your PC's resources.

You might start to see unusual pop-up windows in your web browser or elsewhere. They might be requests to go to websites, or your browser might open windows to other websites without your permission. Ironically, many viruses also open pop-up windows asking you to install antivirus software, which is additional malicious software.

This is a sign the virus is trying to replicate itself through your contacts.

The good news is that viruses pose a small shadow of the risk they once posed in the 1990s and 2000s. Thanks to dramatic improvements Microsoft made to Windows, large-scale virus infections are much less common than they were a decade or two ago, and few people ever encounter viruses when using computers for normal, routine tasks. Even so, it pays to be vigilant by following these tips:

Make sure your computer's operating system is up to date with the latest Windows and security updates.

This can include the security software built into Windows 10 or a third-party antivirus app. Regardless of what you choose, one of the main reasons people don't have to worry about viruses today is because they're automatically protected by Windows and anti-malware software. Disable those protections, and you've thrown yourself back to 2005.

You've no doubt heard this advice before, but that's because it's so important: Never click anything you don't trust. That includes both links and attachments in email if you don't know the sender, or if the email's legitimacy seems questionable don't open anything inside it. The same is true for following links on websites of questionable quality.

With voters approval and the bond process set in motion, the Saginaw Public Schools athletic department is ready to plan for a new athletic landscape for the 2023-24 school year.

But Saginaw athletic director Mit Foley says the district does not want to wait until 2023 before making some changes.

If the Michigan High School Athletic Association grants a waiver, the Saginaw High and Arthur Hill varsity football teams will merge to form a co-op program for the 2021-22 season.

Weve already begun the process, Foley said. Were already co-oping baseball, bowling, cross country, golf, softball, tennis and wrestling. We did a co-op for the JV football team for the 2020 school year.

Were trying to ascend back to exceptional levels for our athletic programs. We want to make sure we have the numbers. Were trying to build our programs. We want our kids to be safe when theyre out there playing. A lot of the numbers were not where we wanted to them to be. We want to be competitive. We want to give our kids every conceivable opportunity to compete. Thats why were accelerating this.

There are some roadblocks to approval. The MHSAA allows co-ops with few restrictions for every sport but basketball and football. The association does not allow co-ops for varsity football and basketball if the combined enrollment of the schools eclipses 1,000 students.

In the current count, Arthur Hill has 757 students with Saginaw High adding 456 for a total of 1,213. The next count date is Feb. 10, 2021.

But the potential merger has some extenuating circumstances that could help its case. The Saginaw Valley League, which includes Saginaw High and Arthur Hill, unanimously approved the co-op and sent a letter to the MHSAA in support of the merger.

Also, the planned, eventual merger of the teams in 2023 could also help convince the MHSAA executive council to grant a waiver for 2021, as could the inability for either school to field competitive teams in their current situations.

In the past 10 years, Arthur Hill is 11-77, including three winless seasons. The Lumberjacks have not had a winning season since 2008. In the past 10 years, Saginaw High is 19-69, with two winless seasons. The Trojans last winning season came in 2003.

Our goal is to get the co-op approved for next year, even though when you get to football and basketball and you get to enrollment over 1,000, they generally dont approve, Foley said. Were hopeful that theyll look at it in the light that we werent competitive and that the SVL voted unanimously and wrote a letter of support for our co-op.

Saginaw Public Schools director of facilities Tim Furtaw said that little construction or physical work will begin for the next six to eight months.

At this point, with the bond just passing, were in the planning stages, Furtaw said. In the first six to eight months, we will be planning, finalizing the designs and things like that so blueprints can be drawn up. There will be six to eight months of planning before any shovel goes in the dirt.

We expect to be able to move kids within the buildings for the remodels that will take place at Saginaw High and Arthur Hill. As far as the new high school being built, we anticipate there will be room for the students at SASA.

Plans are to build a new high school for Arthur Hill and Saginaw High students at the current Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy campus at 1903 Niagara. The plans include a new football stadium and gymnasium.

The current Arthur Hill campus at 3115 Mackinaw will house a new school for SASA and for Handley Elementary, with Arthur Hill Memorial Stadium remodeled for soccer and lacrosse.

Memorial Stadium will be restored, Furtaw said. It will be converted for use for SASA, so it will more than likely be a soccer field and lacrosse field but it will be restored.

The plans call to convert Saginaw High, 3100 Webber, into a middle school.

The facilities will be converted over to middle-school usage, Furtaw said. The bleachers at the football field need to be replaced or torn down and set up for middle-school size. Plans are to refurbish a couple of the ballfields. Were still in the planning stages, but it will probably include demolishing some of the high school.

Foley said there have been no decisions made as far as colors, coaches and names for the new school and teams.

The basketball teams will remain separate until the 2023-24 school year, although this season will create some challenges for fans because of COVID-19 restrictions. Foley said the district installed Pixellot cameras in the Saginaw High and Arthur Hill gyms, giving fans the ability to stream the games live on the National Federation of High Schools network.

Plans are for the completion of the new buildings and fields when students report for the 2023-24 school year.

The goal will be that all students move at the same time, Furtaw said. It will be a day for every Saginaw supporter and resident to come out and cheer.

When an excited member of her faculty came to the president of St. Marys College with slave shackles donated to the school, Tuajuanda C. Jordan paused, her heart heavy.

You always know that theres that history here, said Jordan, the first Black woman to serve as president of St. Marys College of Maryland. But, in my heart of hearts or naivete I had hoped that St Marys did not have an association with slavery.

Then, in 2016, the college discovered the remains of slave quarters on campus during an archaeological dig ahead of constructing a new stadium.

It was a sad day, but it also occurred to us that it was an opportunity to do something special because St. Marys does have an involvement with slavery, she said. It became clear to me that there was a piece of the narrative missing.

That piece will be revealed Nov. 21 during a virtual dedication of the new Commemorative to Enslaved Peoples of Southern Maryland. The memorial, titled "From Absence to Presence," features erasure poetry when a poet takes existing text and erases or obscures portions of the text, creating aentirely new work from what remains including historical documents related to the Mackall-Broome plantation, one of three known plantations near St. Mary's City on a structure inspired by "ghost frame" cabin architecture.

Its a deliberate invocation, a call to remember that there were those who walked this land before we did and that their lives should be memorialized, that their suffering should be understood, that their contributions should no longer be invisible, said Garrey Dennie, an associate professor of African and African Diaspora studies.

The findings didn't come as a complete surprise to Julia King, a professor in the anthropology department, considering the history of the area. Many residents of Southern Maryland supported the Confederacy during the Civil War, despite the state siding with the Union, and the region had a sizable population of enslaved people in addition to a free Black population. About20 miles north of St. Mary's is the historic Sotterley Plantation.

But not much was known about the lives of enslaved people in St. Mary's, which is known for being the birthplace of religious freedom, and the recent findings revealed a deeper diversity in the lives of enslaved people than previously understood.

"Slavery and enslavement had been erased from this landscape and this archeology actually jumpstarted that conversation in a way that became really productive," King said. "Slavery was really what underpinned the development of this region and there is no real monument, no real public monument" to enslaved people, she added.

The site, which appeared to be abandoned by the 1820s, also correlates with an interesting chapter of the country's history, according to King. During the War of 1812, British Admiral George Cockburn sailed along the East Coast near the British-occupied Chesapeake Bay, encouraging enslaved people to defect in return for their freedom. About 19 enslaved people from the St. Marys area reportedly defected, raising the possibility that these abandoned quarters were once their home.

One way to think about it is that the archeology revealed with a kind of texture, things which we already knew but not in that level of detail, said Dennie. A crucial point is that to a significant degree the African American experience disappeared from the consciousness of following generations and the archeology revealed it.

The structure, designed by Shane Allbritton and Norman Lee, incorporates poetry by Quenton Baker that includes language from slave property advertisements, runaway slave advertisements, newspaper articles and slave depositions of the Mackall-Broome family. At night, the words, etched in glass, will be illuminated by light from within the structure and the poetry will be projected onto the ground in a star-like pattern found on some of the ceramic artifacts recovered from the site.

It is like nothing you have ever seen before, it's also like nothing you've ever seen in St. Marys County before, said Jordan.

This year, the Black Lives Matter movement and demonstrations against police violence have reignited conversations around the countrys history of slavery. Now, after statues of racist slave owners and Confederate leaders were taken down around Maryland and the country, a memorial will go up, representing the millions of Africans torn from their homes and enslaved in the United States and other parts of the world.

"I hope that it makes people think about what does that mean for our history and how is this perpetuated in what goes on today and how can we compel the country to be better," said Jordan, pointing out the power of the memorial's design. "It is made out of polished steel. It reflects. It reflects yourself and history and makes you look at yourself."
