TORONTO , June 5, 2013 /CNW/ -When the Canadian economy sheds jobs - and it did in March as 54,500 full time positions disappeared - there's not enough focus on the impact this has on employees and employers.
That's according to employment lawyers Natalie MacDonald and Stuart Rudner, founders of the newly launched Rudner MacDonald LLP, a law firm specializing in employment law.
"Employment is essential to our happiness and wellbeing. Being dismissed is one of the most stressful events we can face," notes MacDonald.
And it's not any easier if you're an employer handing out pink slips.
"Having to let an employee go or conduct layoffs can be extremely difficult. I have seen clients filled with dread by the prospect," adds Rudner.
According to a Statistics Canada report ( April 5, 2013 ) 54,500 full time, private sector employees lost their jobs this Spring. It's the biggest loss since February, 2009.
"We practice employment law in order to make a difference in people's lives, at one of the most stressful and vulnerable times they will ever endure; whether employee or employer," explains MacDonald.
According to Rudner, "We both have a strong sense of fairness. Every day in the news, you read about employees who are abused and, conversely, employers who are taken advantage of by employees that 'work the system'. We are here to help."

Florida-based Red Lobster has completed a remodeling of two San Diego restaurants, as part of a nationwide program of site renovations and menu updates.
A company spokesman said the remodelings at 3780 Sports Arena Blvd. and 8330 Mira Mesa Blvd. stem from a program started in 2008, in which the casual-dining seafood restaurant chain is investing $300,000 to $500,000 per location in renovations. Red Lobster is aiming to have all of its restaurants remodeled by the end of 2014.
The San Diego restaurants exteriors now include a stone tower similar to architecture used in New England, with ship lanterns and Adirondack-style chairs to encourage outdoor mingling and conversation. Interiors have been expanded to allow for large parties, and the company has installed new LED lighting among other energy-saving upgrades.
Menus have been revised with new offerings under $15, and nearly 25 percent of the food selections are now nonseafood items, the spokesman said.
Red Lobster has more than 700 locations, including five in San Diego County. It is among several restaurant brands owned by Darden Restaurants Inc. of Orlando, Fla.

A man has been charged in connection with the death from carbon monoxide poisoning of a 35-year-old woman at a hotel in Co Cork two years ago.
Miriam Reidy was found dead at the Trident Hotel in Kinsale in January 2011.
Richard Davis, 44, from Ballygarvan, Co Cork, was charged with her manslaughter at Macroom District Court this afternoon.
Mr Davis, a plumber, faces three charges relating to Ms Reidy's death.
He is charged with manslaughter and with two charges under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act.
One of these alleges that he negligently converted a boiler at the Trident Hotel for use with liquefied petroleum gas in a manner that exposed people there to a risk to their health and safety.
The other alleges that as a consequence of this work Ms Reidy suffered injury and died.
Judge James McNulty granted Mr Davis free legal aid. He was told a book of evidence to be compiled on the case will be large and complex.
Mr Davis was remanded on bail until 19 September.
Ms Reidy was in Kinsale with her sister Patricia and a group of around 30 friends attending a hen party for her cousin.
