Teresa Jones, Principal at MCHS, told architect Ted Shriver, I never lose that Aha moment when I come up the hill to the school.

Williamson Shriver Architects, Inc. was awarded an Honor Award for Excellence in Architectural Design for the design of Mingo Central High School.
The AIA-WV awards program recognizes projects and details that demonstrate exemplary achievement of design. Entries are not judged in competition with each other, but rather by measuring the architects performance against each projects potential. Thus, projects of ordinary program or modest budget can merit an award based on the architects skill in optimizing the design opportunity.
As Southern West Virginia is comprised generally of rugged terrain with steep mountains and deep river valleys generally subject to flooding, large tracts of land to accommodate the state standards for new high school construction are difficult to find. The Mingo Central project site, however, provided an unusual opportunity not typically available in West Virginias southern coalfields. The project was located on a mountaintop removal site.
Ted Shriver, vice-president of Williamson Shriver, recently visited Mingo Central. He said the jury that voted to award the schools design an Award for Excellence didnt realize the specific challenges faced with this particular design.
Interestingly, one juror said he would have liked to see the surroundings the school was situated in, Shriver said. They didnt judge on the land up here, just on the use of space and the curriculum of the school and the design.

If youve gone grocery shopping lately in Snowmass Village, you probably noticed some construction at the Snowmass Center.
Related Colorado is giving the property an exterior remodel, the first its had since opening in 1979. The project has been under way for about three weeks and will wrap up in about another three, according to company President Dwayne Romero.
Snow and rain in May slowed the project down a bit initially.
Its all weather-dependent, obviously, Romero said.
Much of the remodel focuses on the siding. At certain elevations, the sun has beaten the siding, causing it to bow and its paint to chip. Those portions are being covered with battens, or panels.
In other elevations, which have not been beat by the sun, clearly it was just a scraping and tuneup of trim and then a repaint, Romero said.
The remodel also will repair trim around the whole building and add new paint, awnings, signage and lighting for the signage, Romero said. The color scheme is similar to that of neighboring Town Hall and other buildings in Snowmass Village, which was something resident Rick Griffin, who works in the building, said he particularly likes.
I think theyve done a really good job of upgrading the center from the center that they bought, Griffin said of the current remodel as well as the replacement of the retaining wall in the parking lot and other improvements made.
Were doing what we can, Romero said. The market and the economys not there to come down and just knock this whole building over. And we admit that its been awhile. This thing is long overdue for these types of improvements. But weve been kind of able to save our nickels and now are getting into it where we can start reinvesting a little bit more aggressively.
Barb Wickes, owner of Sundance Liquor, an original tenant of the building, said she was excited about the changes.

ALLEN PARK A dispute between two neighbors over the placement of a gas line has been resolved, though it will end up costing the cash-strapped city a few extra dollars.
The dispute was between the owners of a pair of houses in the 9600 block of Manor Avenue. The owners of one house, Courtney Vavro and Kevin Abdelsalam, have lived in their house since 2009 and wanted to put a fence up before making other improvements to their backyard. Thats when they discovered that their neighbor, John Kozuh, had his fence, sprinkler system and a gas line on a section of their property.
Abdelsalam said Friday that Kozuh, the former city engineer, should have known better. Kozuh said he had the permission of the former owner of the property.
Its not something that happened overnight, Kozuh said. That sprinkler system has been there for about 30 years, and the gas line was run about seven years ago.
I had a gentlemans agreement with the former owner, he said. He told me that I could put the sprinkler system and the fence right up to the driveway.
The fence, which has also been up for several years, was between 15 inches and about 4 feet over the property line. It was installed at an angle, taking up less of Abdelsalams yard in the back than in the front. The fence ran up to the edged of the garage. A space of about 15 feet wide from the edge of the fence to the front of the property was also in question.
When we moved in, we didnt know where the property line was, Abdelsalam said. When we had the property surveyed we were shocked to see how much of the yard he was taking.
Kozuh said he spoke with the couple before they bought the property and told them of his agreement.
Kozuh said as part of the agreement with the former owner, he took care of that section of the yard because it looked like it was part of my yard already. Hes been watering, fertilizing, cutting and raking the grass in that area for years.

EDMOND On May 17, a Friday, Anna Reiner opened her new business Paper Arts, 632 W. Edmond Road. Years of dreaming, planning, hoping and hard work went into that all important day.
Two days later, a painter was in the business, applying lacquer to a cabinet in the restroom. Lacquer is a clear or colored wood finish applied by brushing or spraying. Solvents in lacquer have a particularly strong odor and are extremely flammable.
Mike Barnes, Edmonds chief of fire prevention, said due to lack of ventilation, the fumes ignited and flames began spreading in the bathroom. When the sensor in the bathroom sprinkler head recorded a temperature of 155 degrees, it began to discharge water, which contained the fire to the bathroom and doused the flames on the worker, Barnes said.
Per system design, no other sprinkler heads in the business activated, minimizing water damage, Barnes said. Since the fire was contained, no adjacent businesses in the building were damaged, he said. Thousands of dollars worth of business merchandise was saved. Since the business was able to reopen quickly on Tuesday tax revenue loss was minimized. And most importantly, the worker is recovering from his burns, Barnes said.
I truly believe we saved a life that day, he said.
Reiner said she decided to install a cabinet in the bathroom that was similar to those in the rest of the store. The cabinet was finished out but not painted. The painter wanted to do the work on Sunday, when the store was closed, sparing customers from fumes, Reiner said.
Sunday morning, between 8:30-9 a.m., she got the call from her security provider about the explosion. By the time she arrived, the Edmond Fire Department was there and the painter, who was able to call for help through the security system, had been taken with severe burns to an area hospital.
The store is replaceable. I have insurance. Thats all and good, Reiner said. But as soon as somebodys life is in danger, thats when I get concerned. People cannot be replaced.
Reiner said she was relieved to hear the painter would regain use of his hands. There was damage to the ceiling tile above the bathroom. Barnes said the charring was limited to part of the cabinetry in the bathroom.
Reiner said she cant express enough the value of having a sprinkler system in a business. She said she would rather risk losing the store than let a fire spread to other businesses.
