Fentress Architects Announces its Third Annual Worldwide Student Design Competition,
Fentress Global Challenge 2013: Upcycled Architecture
Winner receives $10,000 USD prize value including paid internship and recognition in the world-renowned A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles, California
Fentress Global Challenge is an international competition created to stimulate students worldwide in the exploration of future design possibilities in public architecture. In its third annual competition, students are invited to envision Fentress Architects concept, Upcycled Architecture.
Upcycled Architecture is defined as the art of redesigning an existing structure for purposes other than those for which it was originally intended. Upcycled Architecture additionally advances an existing buildings sustainable, dynamic, and programmatic uses.
Social and economic changes are not only demanding but they foster phenomenal possibilities to upcycle existing structures. Buildings typically outlive their original purposes and todays architects face the challenge of creatively bringing new life and function to them. This innovative competition offers tomorrows architects the opportunity to embrace the worlds past designs while looking to the future for more sustainable and adaptive uses.
Repurposing a building is a time-honored and extremely effective method for achieving sustainability. Demolishing an existing structure to build a new one from scratch requires an unnecessary use of resources such as time, materials, labor, and capital. However, preserving and repurposing an existing building can enhance both resource efficiency and sustainability. In many cases, retaining older buildings especially those of architectural or historic character has a transformative and positive impact on local communities, economies, and cultures.
This competition is intended to encourage design students to envision and articulate innovative concepts for Upcycled Architecture. Entries need to respond to the changing environment and context surrounding a given site while engaging its history and existing limitations to create a new architectural destination. Participants must develop a new program for the building that is for public use.
We want participants to use their imaginations and submit visionary proposals with inspiring ideas that could play an important role in the redevelopment of not only the chosen site, but the greater community. - Curtis Fentress, FAIA, RIBA, Chairman and Principal-in-Charge of Design at Fentress Architects
Evaluated in areas such as creativity, sustainability, program, and response to site, the winning student or team will earn a prize valued at $10,000 USD, which includes $3,000 USD cash and a paid internship at Fentress Architects during the summer of 2014. Winning designs will gain international exposure while being exhibited at the A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles, California.

West Seneca, NY (PRWEB) June 03, 2013
The National Roofing Contractors Association has updated its recommendations in regards to roof edge specifications in the Northeast due to serious damage from water infiltrating into the homeowners inside walls due to improper drip edge installation.
This new specification is probably the most crucial part of the roof installation process, especially in the Western New York area because of its severe weather conditions, said William J. Sahlem, President of Sahlems Roofing & Siding, Inc.
The new recommendation includes specifics for installation of a drip edge on steep slope roof systems.
Many times the homeowner is unaware of water infiltration because there are no visible signs of leakage in the house. However, this problem can be causing serious damage to the inside of the walls. Often times, the homeowner will not know until its too late.
About the company: Sahlems Roofing & Siding has been one of Buffalo and Western New Yorks premiere residential and commercial roofing, siding and window contractors since its inception. Their company is set up to handle even the largest of commercial and industrial roofing projects. They have a reputation in the Buffalo area as a premier roofing contractor. They are now Buffalos best choice for replacement windows and doors, gutters and siding. They also offer dumpster rental. For over 30 Years, Sahlem's Roofing and Siding has maintained a payroll of full-time installation professionals accountable to their customer's projects. There are no subcontractors, no excuses, and hassle-free estimates. Sahlem's stands by a tagline of "Premium Products, Professional Installation, Affordable Pricing." For more information, please visit their website at http://www.sahlems.com.
Signs of this problem are stains or streaks forming on outside walls or overhangs. This is where the water is infiltrating into walls and can be causing serious damage. Homeowners who notice any of these signs should call a roofing professional for a consultation. When choosing a contractor, always make sure he is reputable.
Sahlems Roofing & Siding began several years ago to implement a drip edge procedure and are very pleased that the NRCA has added it to its current regulated roofing practices. Sahlems has a reputation as a premiere roofing contractor and gutter installer in the Buffalo area.
