A fire buffeted by high winds and dry grass destroyed at least five storage sheds behind a home in Salida late Friday morning.

The blaze at 3901 Finney Road started north of the property, and a cause has not yet been determined, said Battalion Chief Cecil Ridge of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.

Ridge said somebody was discing weeds to the north of the property, but could not confirm if that played a role.

Nobody was injured in the roughly four-acre fire, and there was no damage to the home or garage.

Homeowner Richie Gotelli was having a yard sale in the front and was taking a break on the back patio when he smelled smoke.

"Something told me something was going to happen because of that dry grass when they were out there cutting," he said. "All of a sudden, I smelled smoke. I saw flames. They started about 500 to 600 feet in the middle of that field (to the north)."

He said he ran to two people on the property discing the land; they thought the machinery might have hit a rock and sparked the blaze. He said they told him they had called a fire department.

Gotelli ran back to the house and grabbed an extinguisher and a hose to try to keep the flames from reaching the buildings on his property.

However, by that time, the fire was fast approaching. Gotelli fought as hard as he could before he was overcome by smoke and flames being pushed by warm winds reaching about 25 mph.

It wasnt until after she had enrolled her husband and sons in art classes that she discovered it was she that had the hidden talent. Maggie enrolled at Kennesaw State University in Georgia and graduated in 1994 with a BA in Studio Art. Her work as an artist took on a very important part of her life.

Painting now became her favorite pastime and even a job at which spent countless hours learning and creating beautiful hand painted art. After moving to Perkasie, PA Leiby began painting in the basement of their home. She opened an art gallery nearby as an outlet to display and market her paintings. However, the house was getting a bit tight and she needed a building with plenty of light and open space for a home art school. That was when she found Sheds Unlimited INC of Lancaster County, PA.

She visited the Sheds Unlimited manufacturing facility in Gap and was immediately attracted to the modular two story sheds which she thought would make the perfect at home art studio. It would allow her to have a private painting studio on the second floor with plenty of room and lots of light, as well as ample space on the first floor for the art school she was dreaming of.

It wasnt long until the customized modular two story building was on order. It arrived only weeks after placing the order and her husband went to work ordering materials to finish out the inside. After four months of work insulating, wiring and dry-walling the inside, the home art studio was ready to move into. It was an exciting day when Maggie began painting in her new brightly lit at home art studio!

Today Maggie not only paints in her new home studio, she holds weekly classes in her backyard art studio every Thursday morning. Students set up their painting easels on the wide open first floor equipped with a small kitchen and decorated with lots of paintings on the walls. It also serves as a place for Maggie to display her artwork for anyone who might be interested.

The painting continues and Maggie could not be happier with her home art studio shed. In fact, she tells how that when a problem arose with design of the two story shed, Sheds Unlimited came with a crew and some large equipment to make it right making her a very satisfied customer of Sheds Unlimited.

GEORGE TOWN: Popular eateries are spending a small fortune every month on pest control to ensure the hygiene level is high and to keep rats at bay.

Nasi Kandar Pelita Sdn Bhd Penang general manager Seeni Abuthahir Mohamed said the management spent about RM1,000 monthly on pest control at all its outlets on the island.

The pest control activities are done twice monthly. These keep away pests such as rats, cockroaches and flies, the 42-year-old said at the restaurant in Sungai Dua here yesterday.

He said the management also ensured that the staff cleaned the kitchen, bathroom and mopped the floor every hour.

Another restaurant, Take 2, also maintains a high level of cleanliness at its premises.

Its co-owner, who only wanted to be known as Mrs Tan, 47, said the dining area and kitchen would be cleaned after meal times.

She said although she had not come across any rats in her outlet, she took precautionary measures by placing rat traps at night.

It was reported yesterday that the population of rats in the country has grown into a serious problem in cities and residential areas.

At other eateries, customers still flock to these places despite rodents being a common sight.

The food here is excellent, said a customer who wanted to be known as Ramlan at an A-list nasi kandar restaurant.
