LORAIN A dozen more homes have been added to Lorains tear-down list, and one that is scheduled for demolition could get a reprieve.

The Lorain Demolition Board of Appeals yesterday voted to declare 12 homes were public nuisances that should be abated by razing. Those will be demolished through the Lorain County Land Reutilization Corp., or county land bank.

The meeting also sparked debate on how to deal with a last-minute effort to restore 3818-3820 Omaha Ave., a home and garage that are slated for demolition through the land bank.

This is kind of uncharted territory for this board, said Lorain Fire Chief Tom Brown, who serves as chairman.

The board will ask Lorains Law Department to research the procedure and will consider it at the next meeting at 9 a.m. June 13 at City Hall, 200 W. Erie Ave.

In April the demolition board voted to declare 3818-3820 Omaha Ave. a public nuisance to be torn down through the county land bank.

Yesterday the board heard from Beverly Thomas, owner of 3818-3820 Omaha Ave., and Joe Perez, who has offered to buy the home and repair it.

The home has sat unoccupied for years, said Thomas. She explained she inherited the property upon the death of her husband and hired an attorney to transfer ownership to the city for restoration or demolition.

Thomas said she never received notice the buildings were on the citys nuisance list until a relative alerted her to the city actions.

Lorain Demolition Appeals Board adds 12 homes to knock down list

When Mark Williams heard that a demolition crew at Camp Roberts found an interesting object while knocking down some World War II-era buildings, he thought it must be another soldiers long-lost wallet.

They said, We found something cool, and its in our truck. I wondered what would have to come in a truck, said Williams, who oversees the environmental office at the camp. And when we pulled down the tailgate, it was like, Wow!

The discovery: an original cast-iron El Camino Real bell, more than a century old.

Within the same week, crews unearthed another surprising discovery an old film canister containing a 1952 film reel for the Walt Disney production Two Gun Goofy.

This film reel was found in the footprint of an administration building that was torn down in recent months. It was likely kept in a wooden safe the camp once stored in floor cutouts, said Blaize Uva, a contract archaeologist at the National Guard base just north of San Miguel.

We think that the film was kept in one of these safes, which later deteriorated, leaving the film on the ground underneath the building, hence the good preservation, she added.

Demolition of most of the camps World War II-era structures began last year. The first phase of the project will be complete in mid-June and has so far removed most of the ghost-town type buildings passersby saw along Highway 101. During the demolition, decades-old wallets have been turning up in the debris, shaken out from the hiding places thieves stashed them in long ago.

An old wooden bat, metal lighters, boot wax and tiny glass bottles with metal caps containing chlorine tablets for purifying water have also been found during the demolition. When a breakup letter from a soldiers girlfriend was found, researchers chuckled at the womans desire to leave the man for another suitor who owned two cars while the solider had just a Ford.

Camp officials say the bell brings a broader historical connection to the general public.

They were shocked to find something of this scale, Uva said.

Surprises unearthed at Camp Roberts as demolition continues

Demolition of Eastland Mall could begin as soon as August and, if the project takes as long as similar ones, could be completed in six to nine months.

A significant amount of materials will likely be preserved or recycled, including the malls four iconic entrance signs.

The City Council approved a plan Tuesday to tear down the closed mall for $871,520. The city has said it hopes to redevelop the site, possibly into movie studios. The council voted 10-1 to approve the demolition of the mall, which closed in 2010. Council member Andy Dulin voted no.

Environmental Holdings Group was the citys low bidder for the project, but a contract has not been finalized, said EHG Senior Vice President Brian Sanders.

Salvaging icons

Before Eastlands demolition begins, community members are focused on preserving an important part of the malls character.

Jamie Banks of the citys Neighborhood and Business Services said the city will likely not complete the demolition contract until the community has squared away its plans for saving the entrance signs.

Eastland Area Strategies Team is an east Charlotte community group spearheading plans to preserve the malls four entrance signs. EAST board member Martique Lorray, who lives in the Windsor Park neighborhood near the mall, said the signs are icons representing a site that once inspired a sense of pride in the community.

The group has been in contact with the Arts & Science Council to look into turning the signs into public art in east Charlotte, Lorray said.

It would just create a sense of place and pull some of the dynamic stories of Charlottes past and make it a dynamic story for its future, Lorray said.
