CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If youve ever been to Taste of Tremont, the Tremont Farmers Market, or frequented the nearby restaurants and bars, youre undoubtedly familiar with the red-brick Victorian on the southeast corner of Lincoln Park.
Built in 1870, the home has been carefully restored and thoughtfully renovated over the years, most recently by the current owner, Stephen Harrison.
This home is one of those treasures that just loves you back, says Harrison, the curator of decorative art and design at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On the market for the first time since 2009, 1103 Starkweather Ave. has 3-bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms in 2,578-sq. ft. The asking price is $750,000.
The house transports you back in time with its many original decorative elements such as 12-foot ceilings, huge plaster moldings, arched pocket doors in original finish, wooden floors throughout, carved wooden doors, and a curving staircase with original banister, Howard Hannas Chris Davidson writes in his listing.
He says Harrison worked with architect David Ellison and interior decorator Thomas Lee Randleman on an extensive redesign. Changes include converting a small bedroom upstairs into a gracious bath and laundry room to complete the master suite, which now also boasts a cedar closet. They also enlarged the side porch to be a more versatile space for dining and relaxing. Built-in bookshelves were added to the library.
The result was an outstanding residential preservation award from the Cleveland Restoration Society in 2014.
Practical improvements have brought the home to todays standards, too. They include a new roof and high-capacity hot-water heater in 2018, HVAC systems in 2005 (upstairs) and 2010 (downstairs), and updated electrical throughout in 2000.
This is Tremonts most iconic and recognizable home, Davidson says.

Youve noticed it for years now: that style that mixes leopard print with glitzy chandeliers, mirrored finishes with curved velvet couches. Its simultaneously Old World Hollywood and yet still of-the-moment, but you just havent been able to put your finger on what it is, exactly. Well, were here to tell you that youve been drooling over Hollywood Regency, a style most commonly associated with interior design, furniture, and landscape architecture that comes out of the 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood.
Indeed, the origins of the style can be traced to the silver screens themselves, as actors and actresses grew accustomed to the shiny materials and traditionally-inspired furniture they found on set that created the lavish scenes of their wealthy characters. Set designs emphasized pieces that showed well on camera because of their dramatic surfaces, attention to detail, contrasting of patterns and textiles, and creation of light and dark that could be captured in black and white. Soon, designers of the stars found themselves recreating the opulence of the screen in real life for their clients.
Among those at the forefront of Hollywood Regency were interior designers like Dorothy Draper, who rose to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s after decorating some of the major hotels and apartment buildings in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. Her signature style focused on dramatic color schemes often with shiny black ceilings or black-and-white patterned flooring along with a profusion of mirrors, floral textiles, and green woodwork.
Other designers who had a serious impact on the style were William Billy Haines, a former actor-turned-decorator to the stars, and Paul R. Williams, a noted African American architect whose client roster included the likes of Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Barbara Stanwyck, and more. While Haines, working with his life partner James Jimmie Haines, consistently created designs that fit the high-profile lives of their clients like Joan Crawford, Williams worked in a range of styles and project types. But for his high-end clientele, Williams often produced grand homes that combined the traditional elements of Classical design but slimmed them down, simplifying the ornament to give them a sleek, modern edge.
Story continues
And this combination of traditional and modern continued, borrowing elements and characteristics from several different periods (including the English Regency, which lent part of its name to the new style), but incorporating unexpected color combinations, new materials, geometric patterns, and lots of eye-catching, glamorous textiles and finishes. Think of the glamour of Art Deco materials and simplified lines, but with the eclecticism of an antiques dealer and the maximalism of a movie star.
Like any trend, though, as time went on, the style evolved, too. As historically-inspired styles waned in the 1950s and 1960s and gave way to the International Style and midcentury modernism, Hollywood Regency stayed strong, but took on more modern forms, incorporating more contemporary color palettes and patterns including jewel tones and geometric motifs. It also embraced newer materials like lucite in combination with old classics like shiny brass or glossy lacquer, all while keeping true to its origins rooted in old school glamour and glitz.
Thinking about incorporating Hollywood Regency into your own home? Take a look at some celebrity homes that continue to seek out this now-classic California style for their own spaces, and see if you can find any inspiration for yourself.

From ELLE Decor
Few designers have married purpose and passion as successfully as James Ford Huniford. In 2004, the New Yorkbased decorator founded Design on a Dime, the hugely popular annual fundraiser for Housing Works, the nonprofit fighting AIDS and homelessness. As an ELLE Decor A-List designer, he is known for mixing found objects with antique and contemporary pieces as well as for his emphasis on sustainabilitya sensibility that is captured in his new book James Huniford: At Home, published by the Monacelli Press.
The book, Hunifords first, takes a thematic approach. Huniford presents his work by examining such topics as how to approach a room and achieve scale and proportion, all while showcasing homes that range from city to country, from East Coast to West.
I hope the book will help people look at an interior and think about mixing and matching, Huniford tells ELLE Decor. Or evaluating what they might think are their problems with a room and being able to resolve that.
One theme that stretches across all of Hunifords work is his surprising use of materials. Like the factory molds that are mounted on the wall of Hunifords own Bridgehampton, New York, kitchen, his focus on reuse and rediscovery creates delight and disruption in equal measure. Huniford says he is inspired by the work of artists like Richard Serra, who force the viewer to appreciate shape, color, and texture in new ways. A Huniford room might display wooden rings that were meant for hoopskirts as art; might turn tree trunks into tables, as in the Westchester County, New York, cottage of Josh Lehrer and Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller; or might feature a ships ladder as a design element.
The trick to making found objects work as decor? Using color as a unifying canvas. Huniford is drawn to warm whites with a hint of celery or a shade of blue in them.
By finding new uses for old things, Huniford says he is creating an opportunity for conversation. When you work with objects that are reinvented, theres just a lot more freedom, Huniford says. Theres a playfulness and also a point of dialogue.
Story continues
At Home is a testament to Hunifords visionone that reveals his creativity and imagination, and one that pushes both his clients and his readers to rethink the possibilities of what design can be.

The Century Project for the Space NeedleSeattleProject of the Year Finalist and Best Project
Owner: Space Needle Corp.Lead Design Firm: Olson KundigGeneral Contractor: Hoffman Construction Co.Structural/MEP Engineer: ArupAcoustic Engineer: BRC AcousticsSubcontractors: Seneca Group; Battle Management Consulting; Magnusson Klemencic Associates; Holaday-Parks Inc.; Holmes; Front Inc.; Niteo; RDH; Tihany Design; McVey Oakley; Five Lund Engineering; OBrien & Co.
For a structure that was intended to reflect space age innovation, the first major renovation of Seattles landmark Space Needle appropriately applied multiple creative solutions to tackle potentially daunting challenges. Rather than use a conventional scaffolding system, the project team worked with specialty consultants to develop a movable engineered platform connected to the Needles upper structure. The platform provided a safe and productive enclosed workspace and facilitated efficient transport of materials.
In addition, a mini phasing plan allowed the Space Needle to remain open to visitors during construction. Crews worked their way around the observation deck installing new custom-crafted seamless floor-to-ceiling glass walls, structural glass barriers and integral glass benches in small sections while maintaining enough space for visitors to enjoy the Space Needles full visual experience. The most disruptive work was performed at night, with visitors able to return by the morning.
Visitors may well have been equally fascinated by watching the installation of the observation decks 2,300-lb glass panels. A ground-controlled system of motorized fans attached to the panels kept each one carefully aligned as they were raised to the Needles top level. There, a 5,600-lb, track-mounted glass-placement robot named Ndulu carefully maneuvered the panels into place.
Interior work included a new cantilevered steel-and-glass oculus stair to connect all three top of the house levels, culminating with the Loupe, a revolving 37-ton glass floor at its base. A specially fritted pattern on the floors underside allows visitors to see out, but the floor appears opaque from the ground below. The team worked through several strategies to develop this element and test frit mock-ups, ultimately creating a glass diving board that cantilevered into the elevator shaft. A motor-powered system of ceramic rollers and built-in channels allows the floor to slide laterally, accommodating building movement. Automatic adjustments keep the floor centered and mitigate the buildings imperfect geometry.

Mike and Brenda Eickhoff are excited to be reopening The Sweet Stop and Sandwich Shoppe.Photo by Hannah Wingert
Everyone knows that renovations of any kind can be stressful. So what better time to do them than during 2020, a year marked by intense stress for just about everyone? When Mike and Brenda Eickhoff temporarily closed the The Sweet Stop and Sandwich Shoppe in Preston on July 26, they saw an opportunity to finally get some renovations done that had been on their list for a while. At first, the plan was just to install a walk-in freezer and redo the back wall of the shop, but once they started, they decided to keep going and renovate the whole back of their sandwich shop. Since they were already closed anyway, the opportunity couldnt be passed up. Its been a positive thing to have the time to do it, Brenda commented.
Just a few days after closing their doors, renovations began. The back entrance of the shop was changed from a simple awning over the back door to being an enclosed walkway with a walk-in freezer and the entry next to it. The sloped ceiling in the back workspace was leveled and the walls redone with a material that will be easier to clean and care for. The shelving was changed to be more efficient as well. The installation of the walk-in freezer allowed Mike and Brenda to eliminate three stand-alone freezers from their work area, which opened up 12-feet of wall space, a considerable gain in an often tight, cramped area. New flooring was also installed in the back. The renovations even spilled out into the area behind the deli counter with new walls. Mike also moved the outlets from the walls to the floor in that area, which allowed the workspace to be moved farther back and added three inches in width. If you gain an inch here or there, it makes a big difference, he explained.
Mike, a long-time former employee of Eichkoff Construction did most of the work himself, but did get help from his previous employer with the back wall and roof renovations. Brenda spent much of her time catching up on projects at the couples home that they usually didnt have time to tackle due to their hectic schedules as business owners. She did pop into the sandwich shop now and then to help move things around and do other odd jobs.
The renovations were supposed to be completed in October, but there were manufacturing delays with the walk-in freezer door due to COVID-19 that pushed the project back. The Eichkoffs are done for now, but still have plans to install new flooring behind the deli counter and renovate the seating area at some point. Right now, they have a potential date picked out between Christmas and New Years when they can close for a week.
The renovations made The Sweet Stop look amazing, but more importantly, they will help things to run even smoother and more efficiently. Its definitely going to make life easier, Brenda said. Prep work can now be done in the back instead of having to bring the food up front to prepare it.
As the reopening date of November 9 drew closer, Mike and Brenda worked hard to make sure everything was ready to go. The Thursday beforehand was spent restocking groceries and supplies. The soft serve ice cream machine was prepped, and Brenda arrived early Monday morning to bake fresh bread for their famous sandwiches. During the three plus months that they were closed, Mike and Brenda received countless messages and questions from people asking when they planned to come back. Lots of people are excited to see us reopen, Brenda said.
When the doors were finally opened again on November 9, the people showed up. We kept hearing its great to have us open again, Brenda said. Everyone is super excited.
The Sweet Shop and Sandwich Shoppe is now open for their regular winter hours of 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Visit http://www.thesweetstop.net for more information on hours, menu, and online ordering.

Follow Your Heart Wholeheartedly (2020), rattan sticks, yarn, rakes, washers, plastic swords, toy soldiers, beads, metal and plastic ornaments, 131.5 x 141.75 x 11.75 inches. Installation view of Asia Society Triennial: We Do Not Dream Alone at Asia Society Museum, New York. Photograph by Bruce M. White. All images courtesy of Asia Society, shared with permission
In her fiber-based reliefs, Malaysian artist Anne Samat disrupts classic woven patterns with unusual objects: toy soldiers, rakes, and plastic swords are intertwined in the multi-color threads that fan outward and billow down onto the floor. Comprised of a trio of wall hangings and a free-standing sculpture, Follow Your Heart Wholeheartedly meticulously juxtaposes beadwork and traditional South Asian weaving techniques with common items, a project that questions the boundaries of craft and art.
Each section is incredibly complex and infused with references to Samats family, identity, and experiences with loss. The largest work, for example, features five sections, with the innermost piece paying homage to her late brother who recently died after a long illness. Flanking the central portion are two stately pillars with pink and blue details that represent her mother and father. The outermost layers that sprawl from floor to ceiling evoke the artist herself and her sister, who are the only two living members of her family. Even the title is derived from advice Samat received from her father before he died.
Follow Your Heart Wholeheartedly is on view through February 7, 2021, as part of the Asia Society Triennial.
