After many months of debate, the La Salle County Board eliminated all of its restrictions. The Illinois county had once required all swimming pools of four feet to be surrounded by a five foot fence. The county-wide regulations have been debated since December, and will affect rural swimming pools, though not municipal pools.

While the vote to lower the mandatory fence height by a foot was voted down 20-6, total elimination of pool fence requirements altogether were brought up for review and was approved by the board in a 21-5 vote. The primary reason for removal was to save money. Other reasoning included that La Salle is Illinoiss second largest county, and that makes it difficult to monitor. The rural residents also felt that they are well isolated and do not require fences to deter neighboring children.

Although certain areas of the country are starting to do away with pool fence laws, New Jersey still has strict codes. The height requirements may vary from town to town, but they are necessary statewide. As summer is fast approaching, now is the time that many people have swimming pools installed into their yards.

JOHNSTOWN - Eight Fulton County-owned properties in the city of Gloversville recently were authorized for demolition.

The Board of Supervisors referred the parcels to the county Demolition Team for razing under the county's Operation Green Scene program.

Solid Waste Director Jeff Bouchard was authorized to mobilize the team to raze and clean up these county-owned Gloversville parcels, whose former owners are listed: 131 E. Fulton St. - Sean Armstrong; 68 E. Pine St. - Armstrong; 126 Broad St. - Jeremiah and Marjorie Bean; 41 E. Fulton St. - Maziah Property LLC; 130 Fremont St. - Nadine Morrison; 38 Fifth St. - Nancy E. Naish; 21 Oakland Ave. - Valdes, Armando & Laurie; and 115 Washington St. - the estate of Robert Zuckerwar.

The resolution states the demolition projects involving the tax-delinquent properties will be completed in the "most efficient and cost-effective manner possible."

County Treasurer Terry Blodgett recently told the Finance Committee the eight properties being prepared for demolition are "in poor condition and pose a safety issue." He said his office plans to remove the parcels from the county's planned June 19 real property auction.

The demolition team was established in 2001. The county and Gloversville entered into an intermunicipal agreement in 2004 to have the county assume property tax collection and enforcement responsibilities for the city.

Supervisors established Operation Green Scene to demolish dilapidated residential properties and foster rehabilitation in the community.

In other board business at the County Office Building last week:

A resolution was approved awarding bids for the Children with Handicapping Conditions Transportation Program. Awarded bids went to: Blue Line Commuter for three Whispering Pines sites in Gloversville - about $145 per day per site; and Brown Coach for two Whispering Pines sites in Amsterdam - about $159 per day per site.

County Administrative Officer Jon Stead said runs average four to 13 children per route.

County plans demolition of properties

The demolition of a vacant shopping center that will become the future home of the areas first Ikea store is set for Wednesday in Merriam.

The 60,000-square-foot building, which was initially planned for a Circuit City electronics store, will be razed and replaced by an Ikea home furnishing store that will be about six times as large.

The teardown is scheduled to begin around 10:30 a.m. at 6030 Eby Ave., near the southeastern corner of Interstate 35 and Johnson Drive, according to a news release issued Friday by Ikea.

The Swedish company said it is working with Heartland Habitat for Humanity and other local organizations to recycle and salvage as much of the existing buildings materials and parts as possible.

The Ikea store is scheduled to open in fall 2014. The multilevel store will be built on 19 acres and have about 1,200 parking spots. Construction on the store is expected to begin in several months, following completion of the demolition and site preparation.
