More than 1,000 acres of farmland are being given back to nature at Wild Ken Hill, between Snettisham and Heacham.
And the rare-breed beasts now roaming the rewilding project have been introduced for their mixture of grazing, browsing and soil disturbance aiming to replicate the natural land-management behaviour of the wild herbivores that wandered through this landscape many thousands of years ago.
The hardy Exmoors will be well suited to a life in the wild. The estate says Exmoor ponies that have not been handled are usually difficult to get close to, and will typically run off when walkers or dogs get close, rather than confronting them.
Similarly the Red Polls, derived from the original cattle of Norfolk and Suffolk, can thrive on coarse vegetation and were also selected for their small stature and calm nature. The 30-strong herd is made up of cows, calves and heifers, and there are currently no bulls.
The cattle and ponies, along with the estates wild deer population, will graze and browse off vegetation in the hope it will help to create the healthy woodland pasture environment that is associated with high biodiversity. Their dung also helps to cycle nutrients, and they carry seeds around in their fur which helps vegetation to spread.
READ MORE: Beavers set to breed in Norfolk for the first time in centuriesAnd the new arrivals will join the two Tamworth pigs released into the rewilding area last month, aiming to replicate the behaviour of wild boar that lived here centuries ago. The Tamworths have a different role to the Red Poll and Exmoors they disturb the soil, almost ploughing the top layer as they rootle in search of food. It is estimated that a mature Tamworth sow can disturb around 50 acres of topsoil in a year.
This behaviour helps vegetation to regenerate, and could help to restore overgrown acid heathland.
Project manager Dominic Buscall said: We are delighted to now have Red Poll cattle, Exmoor ponies, and Tamworth pigs all on site at Wild Ken Hill. Each of these species will enhance the variety of habitats here as part of our conservation, rewilding and sustainable farming work where we seek to be a national leader.
The herds will not only help graze down vegetation, but also assist with seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, soil disturbance, and a variety of important natural processes.

If anyone has a cat who's kidneys are failing and the've lost their appetite , this should correct that problem, it did so for my 14 year old cat. He has been on a special kidney diet for two months, and all of a sudden he stopped eating. I tried a lot of things like omega 3 fish oil but it only helped briefly. The vet prescribed an ointment that I put in his ear. I did this on Monday. It is now Wednesday, and he hasn't stopped eating, actually following me around looking for more food.I don't know if it helps dogs, but worth checking into if you have a dog that doesn't want to eat. The name of the product is ,Mirataz and it comes in a small .5 gram tube. The instructs are to apply daily as needed, but I have only had to use it once so far. If his appetite changes Ill apply another dose.

The luxury new-home market and price point just below $1 million continues to be strong despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and builders say they dont expect it to slow through the end of the year and into 2021.
Las Vegas-based Home Builders Research reported there were 91 closings of new homes of $1 million or more during the third quarter ending in September. That is up from 75 from the same period a year ago.
For the year, there have been 205 new-home closings of $1 million or more through the third quarter, eight more than the first nine months of 2019.
Thats a strong showing despite COVID-19 when many people sheltered in place for a couple of months. That only counts the number of closings, and sales remain strong and will show up when homes are completed.
The market segment that includes $750,000 and above is also strong. There were 202 closings during the third quarter, up from 176 a year ago.
That segment was hit hard at the start of the pandemic but still recorded 490 for the year, one more than the first nine months of 2020.
Home Builders Research President Andrew Smith said luxury buyers arent affected as much by the economy, and the stock market is strong and interest rates are low.
Not only are production builders doing well but there are smaller custom homebuilders that have been building new luxury multimillion home estates and putting them on the market, Smith said.
If you are a wealthy individual who has a mansion in California, you can snatch up the most expensive house in Vegas like its nothing, Smith said.
Heres a look at what some of the builders are seeing:
Blue Heron
I have not experienced a market this strong in my whole career, including the 2005 days when things were at their peak, said Blue Heron CEO and founder Tyler Jones. Its been incredible. Talking with our sales team its (going to be) coming in numbers we havent seen before. Its exciting for Las Vegas.
Jones attributed the surge in luxury sales to lifestyle changes in terms of what people think about homes related to COVID-19. There are also geographic relocations prompted by higher taxes and political issues and unrest in other states, including California.
Everything has changed dramatically since COVID, Jones said. Its an acceleration of whats been going on in recent years. Taxes in California and other states are driving people to places like Nevada and Las Vegas that have a much easier tax climate. Its hard to track how quickly and how much more interest were getting from people in California.
Jones said COVID has prompted people to be more attuned to their home experience because theyve been cooped up and isolated. If people arent satisfied with their home, they are looking to upgrade and make it a nicer experience, he said.
With more people working from home, theyre seeing more home office space and space for homeschooling. They want bigger yards and more square footage, he said.
Jones said hes also heard from buyers worried about civil unrest where they live and want more stability and security.
Las Vegas is viewed as more stable than Portland or Los Angeles, Jones said. Weve had a lot of interest from big places where people dont feel safe.
Jones said all of their communities and custom-home production is doing well. Blue Heron has 39-home tract The Bluffs in Southern Highland with prices $2 million and up; the 34-home Obsidian near MacDonald Highlands in Henderson with prices of $2.5 million and up; Dragon Rock in MacDonald Highlands that started selling in 2020 and sold seven of 40 more lots available with homes starting at $1.5 million; and Equinox, an eight-lot custom-home neighborhood in MacDonald Highlands with homes for $3 million and above. In Lake Las Vegas, it has Vantage with 37 lots with $1.5 million to start. Blue Heron is set to unveil Caliza for sale in Lake Las Vegas starting at $1.6 million. It has 27 lots.
We have several other projects in planning right now, Jones said, citing there will be a need for luxury homes given a lack of supply. I think theres going to be an issue with that in Las Vegas over the next year or two. I believe we are at the beginning of these trends and influx of people that are moving out of these other places.
As the supply dwindles, Jones predicts there will be price appreciation in the luxury segment.
Anybody who owns a home is going to do well over the next couple of years, Jones said.
Toll Brothers
Colleen McCullough, division vice president of sales and customer experience at Toll Brothers, said they were nervous when the pandemic hit in April. The market shifted in May and has continued to go up since then, she said.
The fact that people are working from home and remote working has become more of a norm (has made a difference), McCullough said. They are also releasing themselves from California. With the interest rates at an all-time low, it makes sense for the world to either refinance or move. People have been sitting in their homes and thinking about all of the things they wanted to change about them. It sent them right into the real estate market.
In Tolls luxury segment, McCullough said theyre seeing 75 percent of buyers coming from California. Its Mesa Ridge in Summerlin is the most popular community today with homes in the $1.7 million to $2 million range. It also has Fairway Hills and Mira Villa luxury condos in Summerlin with $2.5 million penthouses. Tolls Regency community in Summerlin has a collection of $750,000 and above homes, McCullough said.
We havent seen any signs its stopping, McCullough said. We see it every single week topping our sales from the previous week. We cant slow down in Mesa. They are projecting the real estate market will continue hot through the holidays. Thats unusual. We typically do our home sales from January to May. This is going to be an unusual but very welcome addition to our winter.
Pardee Homes
Klif Andrews, division president for Pardee, said everything above $750,000 has been a great price range and is selling well in Las Vegas this year. That market has been helped by out-of-state buyers, he said.
Because of taxes and work from home flexibility, that has people thinking about different cities to live in, Andrews said. Right now, 40 percent of our buyers are coming from out of state. Its primarily from California but from everywhere like Illinois and Michigan.
Local buyers are like others in that homes are a bigger priority in their lives because of COVID-19 and lockdowns, Andrews said.
We see it across the board but luxury homes for sure; people are saying Im not traveling that much, I really want to love my home, Andrews said. They want outdoor living and pools. They want to live a little bit of a resort lifestyle at home.
Andrews said supply is limited. They have sold most of their completed homes and having a hard time keeping up building new homes now.
Most of its luxury communities are in Summerlin and Inspirada in Henderson at above $750,000 and Midnight Ridge near Sunridge Heights Parkway in Henderson. Nova Ridge and Sandalwood are the Summerlin communities with prices averaging above $1 million.
Were trying to build faster, Andrews said. Were fortunate to be able to increase prices. I dont see the market slowing down. The supply of California buyers who dont want to pay state income taxes and have the flexibility of not having to work in California any longer, thats a huge market.
Andrews said he sells one home a week at those communities, which is 40 percent above normal. People are also customizing their homes with upgraded finishes.
Richmond American
Luke OLoughlin, vice president and director of sales, said theres been a pent-up demand for luxury, and when inventory is low demand will be high.
The company is closing out its luxury homes, moving through at a quicker pace than expected, he said.
Our sales pace is going to slow a little bit because were closing those things out, OLoughlin said. Every lot is extremely valuable to us right now. Whenever one becomes available, it sells.
OLoughlin said theres not a lot of existing luxury homes for sale, and that drives people to builders.

According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index, record-low mortgage rates were not enough to offset inventory shortages and rising home prices as housing affordability continued to decline in the third quarter of 2020.
In all, 58.3 percent of new and existing homes sold between the beginning of July and end of September were affordable to families earning an adjusted U.S. median income of $72,900. This is down from the 59.6 percent of homes sold in the second quarter of 2020 that were affordable to median-income earners and the lowest reading since the fourth quarter of 2018.
"Though low mortgage rates and favorable demographics have helped spur demand, a lack of inventory exacerbated by supply chain issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to rising home prices," said NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke, a custom home builder from Tampa, Fla. "Surging lumber prices also peaked more than 170 percent above mid-April levels in September, raising building costs. However, lumber prices are now trending lower, which is good news for prospective home buyers."
"A six-month supply of homes is considered a normal supply and demand balance, and this figure has been running below a four-month rate since July, putting upward pressure on home prices," said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz. "As builders look to ramp up production, the work-at-home trend is contributing to a suburban shift, meaning that buyers have additional market power to shop for affordable markets."
The HOI shows that the national median home price jumped to an all-time high of $313,000 in the third quarter, surpassing the previous record-high of $300,000 set in the second quarter. Meanwhile, average mortgage rates fell by 29 basis points in the third quarter to a record-low of 3.05 percent from 3.34 percent in the second quarter.
Lansing-East Lansing, Mich., and Scranton-Wilkes Barre-Hazleton, Pa., were tied as the nation's most affordable major housing market, defined as a metro with a population of at least 500,000. In Lansing-East Lansing, 89.4 percent of all new and existing homes sold in the third quarter were affordable to families earning the area's median income of $75,000. Likewise, 89.4 percent of all new homes sold in Scranton-Wilkes Barre-Hazleton were affordable to families earning the area's median income of $66,600.
Rounding out the top five affordable major housing markets in respective order were Pittsburgh, Pa.; Harrisburg-Carlisle, Pa.; and Albany-Schenectady-Troy, N.Y.
Meanwhile, Cumberland-Md.-W.Va., was rated the nation's most affordable smaller market, with 96.2 percent of homes sold in the third quarter being affordable to families earning the median income of $57,500. Smaller markets joining Cumberland at the top of the list included Wheeling, W.Va.-Ohio; Lima, Ohio; Binghamton, N.Y. and Monroe, Mich.
San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco, Calif., was the nation's least affordable major housing market. There, just 9 percent of the homes sold during the third quarter were affordable to families earning the area's median income of $130,900.
Other major metros at the bottom of the affordability chart were in California. In descending order, they included Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale; Anaheim-Santa Ana-Irvine; San Diego-Carlsbad; and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara.
All five least affordable small housing markets were also in the Golden State. At the very bottom of the affordability chart was Salinas, where 10.9 percent of all new and existing homes sold in the third quarter were affordable to families earning the area's median income of $75,800.
In descending order, other small markets at the lowest end of the affordability scale included Merced; Santa Cruz-Watsonville; San Rafael; and Napa.

The 34th annual Parade of Homes begins this weekend, presented by the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association (WCFHBA).
The event, postponed from the spring, aims to showcase the craftsmanship, diversity, and quality of the regions premier homes, according to a news release.
Homes are open from noon to 5 p.m. each day and next weekend Nov. 14-15. The self-guided tour is free to the public.
With everyones safety in mind, consumers will notice that this years Parade will have a different look and feel to it from prior years, the release stated. One of the most notable changes involved converting our traditional plan book into a fully immersive digital experience through a new interactive website.
Participants can explore more than 60 different homes, get to know the 32 builders, view home descriptions, view photos and floor plans, take 3D virtual tours and see the latest in construction, designs and furnishings, according to the release.
This years entries include single-family houses, townhouses and custom homes with prices from the $200,000s to the millions, and everything in between, the release stated.
The gated community Whiskey Branch, sponsored by Alpha Mortgage, is the 2020 Community Showcase Partner.
Holding events this year has certainly had its challenges, said Cameron Moore, executive officer of the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association. As we prepare to welcome the community, the association and our builders have placed a significant emphasis on safety this year as we have invested heavily in PPE, such as face masks and hand sanitizer for each house. All of our guests can be rest assured that everyones health and safety is our top priority this year.
Moore said local association officials have been encouraged by what theyve heard from other associations that have held similar events.
Their overall traffic seemed to be right on target with what they expected, he said.
