Beacon Roofing posts small 2Q loss

    - May 11, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Associated Press

Beacon Roofing Supply Inc., a building materials distributor based in Peabody, reported a small fiscal second-quarter loss, as harsh weather conditions in many of its markets reduced sales.

Beacon said the recent quarter was a tough one as a result of rough winter and spring weather conditions and comparisons to a prior-year period when sales to existing markets jumped 28 percent.

For the quarter ended March 31, the company lost $161,000, or breakeven on a per share basis, compared with net income of $3.1 million, or 7 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding one-time items, the company said it posted an adjusted loss of 2 cents per share.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $416.3 million from $395.2 million, helped by contributions from recent acquisitions. Sales to existing markets fell 5.1 percent.

Analysts, on average, expected a breakeven per share performance on $422.4 million in revenue, according to FactSet.

Beacon shares rose 47 cents to $38.47 in morning trading. They are trading near the high end of their 52-week range of $22.55 to $39.81.

    Renovations begin at Vista Aliso

    - May 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Nadia Babayi, executive director of Laguna Beach Seniors, hopes the upcoming renovation at the Vista Aliso senior living complex will encourage more seniors to use the Susi Q Senior Center.

The property's owner, National Church Residences, started work on the exterior of Vista Aliso's seven buildings, part of a larger $1.24 million renovation that includes adding a restroom to the common area, roof and window replacements, and kitchen and bathroom renovations in each of the complex's 71 tenant units.

Vista Aliso is one of seven California properties owned by Columbus, Ohio-based National Church Residences.

Exterior renovations, such as replacing roof portions and windows, have started and will be completed by June, said Steve Bodkin, the company's senior vice president and chief operating officer of housing. Crews will then upgrade the laundry room and office in the common area.

Individual unit remodels will start in July and be done by October. The company will also pay for tree and hedge plantings to give residents privacy, and add some new patios.

Tenants will not need to move out during renovation but will not be able to use their kitchens for a couple of days and their bathrooms for several hours, Bodkin said. He said the property owner will provide meals during the kitchen improvements, which will include new cabinets, countertops, floors and ranges, and offer the use of refrigerators.

Bathrooms will have new vanity areas, exhaust fans and floors.

The improvements have been a long time coming. The common area restroom is especially needed, Bodkin said.

"Imagine doing laundry [in the common room] and walking clear back to your room to use the restroom?" Bodkin said. "We felt Vista Aliso needed a major renovation."

Residents will have shuttle service available to and from the Susi Q, 380 Third St., during renovation, Babayi said.

    Small Remodeling Budgets, Big Upgrades

If you've got a smaller home with no more than five to eight front windows without shutters, consider adding some to improve the curb appeal, advises Sullivan. However, on a $1,000 budget youll likely only be able to afford vinyl shutters, which start at $21 per pair at Home Depot (wooden shutters start at $46 per pair). You'll spend the remainder of your $1,000 budget having a professional install them.

If you already have exterior shutters and theyre in good condition, apply a fresh coat of paint to give them new life. The cost of hiring a painter to update exterior shutters varies by location, but it can be less than $1,000 depending on the quality of the paint and other materials, such as primer, being used. In Washington, D.C., for example, the average cost of painting 16 shutters for eight windows starts at $581.55, according to Homewyse.com, a Web site that offers cost projections for labor and materials. In Seattle, it'll run you $650.81.
