The architects of the development flew in from New York to take part in a topping out ceremony.
The team, from US firm Steven Holl Architects, joined Glasgow colleagues from the city's JM Architects and Professor Seona Reid, director of the art school.
Speaking at the event, Professor Reid said: "Over the last year the site has been a hive of activity as this wonderful building has risen from the ground and revealed its elegance and originality.
"Today's topping out ceremony is a landmark occasion for all the many people who have been involved in this exciting development.
"We are delighted to have Steven Holl and Chris McVoy with us today along with the team from JM Architects and representatives from Sir Robert McAlpine and Arup Engineering."
Built by Arup Engineering, the building is one of the most significant currently under construction in the UK.
The academic building will house design studios and offices, technical workshops and digital media labs, lecture facilities, communal staff and student areas, exhibition spaces and a new Mackintosh centre.
The site, opposite the Mackintosh Building, also includes a radical refurbishment of the GSA Students' Union, known as "the Vic".
Yesterday's ceremony saw a leafy branch nailed to the very top of the building, representing future growth.
Professor Reid added: "We are looking forward eagerly to the time when we can occupy the building and watch it providing an inspiring new environment for the creative endeavours of our staff and students."

A Colorado roofing company has been ordered to repay more than $50,000 to Kansas consumers, Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.
All Trades Construction, also known as Duran Duran Roofing, and Louisa Duran were accused of violating the Kansas Consumer Protection Act by taking down payments from at least six Kansas consumers but never performing any work on the consumers roofs. The Attorney General also alleged that All Trades Construction and Luisa Duran forged one consumers signature on an insurance proceeds check. The complaints came from Greenwood, Shawnee and Johnson Counties.
The Attorney General obtained a judgment in Shawnee County District Court ordering the company and Duran to repay a total of $50,954 to Kansas consumers and to pay an $80,000 civil penalty. The judgment also enjoins the company and Duran from further violations of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act.
Schmidt reminded Kansans that it is usually best to work with a trusted, local contractor when home repairs are required. They should be sure the company they are working with has the required local permits and insurance. Beginning July 1, roofing contractors will also be required to register with the Attorney Generals Office, pursuant to the Kansas Roofing Registration Act recently approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Brownback.
Kansans who may have been a victim of a scam or unlawful door-to-door sales practice should contact the Attorney Generals Consumer Protection Division at (800) 432-2310 or http://www.ag.ks.gov.

Release: TOPEKA (May 8, 2013) A Colorado roofing company has been ordered to repay more than $50,000 to Kansas consumers, Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.

The Attorney General also alleged that All Trades Construction and Luisa Duran forged one consumers signature on an insurance proceeds check.
Taking payment for services that are never performed is unlawful, Schmidt said. Consumers should be cautions when dealing with contractors selling their services door-to-door and should remember that under Kansas law they have a three-day right to cancel.
