Home improvement projects can enhance a living space and provide a change of scenery, but a simple addition or renovation can quickly become not-so-simple.
Owners who arent careful could find themselves in financial or legal trouble, which is easily prevented by checking with a local building department before beginning.
Two of the most common mistakes include starting work without a permit and failing to check a contractors license, according to the Natrona County and Casper building departments.
A lot of times they start constructing things and they dont have a permit for it, Code Enforcement Supervisor Shelley LeClere said. And then its illegal.
Improvements that are cosmetic, such as paint or decoration, do not require permission, but LeClere said everything else does. Everything from kitchen or bathroom remodels to fireplaces and fences all require a permit.
People dont think about fences, but they do need a permit to put up a fence or to change a fence, she said.
Permits to change or install a fence are free.
For plans that involve outdoor additions, LeClere said owners also need to make sure the area zoning allows the project and ensure it does not cross property lines. Landowners of rental units also need permits for any renovation because of the public health and safety concerns that come with housing tenants.
Casper and Natrona County residents can apply for building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits at their respective building departments. Forms are also available online. Fees vary depending on project.

City officials determined that long-vacant houses between 56 and 68 Lexington Ave. were in imminent danger of collapse, jeopardizing the public. They ordered emergency demolition. WNYT
ALBANY -For years the seven houses on the east side between 56 and 68 Lexington Ave. had been left vacant and deteriorating.
"There were already plans put together for this site with ACAP to put a Head Start school here and a community gym soit gives us a chance to move forward to make this neighborhood a lot better that what it is," said the Albany Common Council member for the area Ron Bailey.
Bailey and barbershop owner Robert Brown are thrilled the buildings are being torn down.
"So when you've got these abandoned buildings like that what happens is, you've got squatters, you've got people coming in using drugs," said Brown.
But Historic Albany Foundation, which is headquartered nearby, is not happy. Executive Director Susan Holland questions the need for emergency action, circumventing normal community consideration and approval.
"They were definitely not emergencies," Holland said."There were some buildings that were distressed but this is not what I would qualify as an emergency."
But the city commissioner who made the call on emergency demolition defends his action.
"So if there's an imminent threat of collapse of the building,it means there's a danger to the public," said Jeffrey Jamison."So if there's a danger to the public we need to abate it right away."

Spirit of the Seacoast Cocktail Week begins Tuesday, May 7.File photo
PORTSMOUTH What exactly is molecular mixology?
Hit Surf Restaurant and Surf Sushi Bar this week to find out as the Spirit of the Seacoast Cocktail Week begins Tuesday, May 7 and leads up to the Portsmouth Hit the Decks Celebration on Friday, May 10.
The special weeklong event focuses on emerging trends in craft spirits and craft cocktails. Molecular mixology transforms alcohol into different forms, and taking on unique flavors, much like the trend of molecular gastronomy.
On Tuesday, mixologists at Surf Sushi Bar will don lab coats and infuse science with mixology, transforming your White Russian into a White Siberian, a frozen foam version of a 1980s cocktail using liquid nitrogen. Gin and tonics will be transformed into a cube using spherification, and your Manhattan will be transformed into a breakfast cocktail with flavors of maple and bacon.
On Wednesday, May 8, sake flights will be offered to experience the different classifications of premium sakes. Learn about the different methods used in sake production from the basic futsu, to the unfiltered nigori style and a sparkling sake. The second flight will take you up the sake classifications from junmai, to junmai gingo, to junmai daigingo.
Thursday is Local Craft Spirits Night. A celebration of the quality artisanal spirits being created locally. The trend of local craft spirits is on the same rise local craft beer was five years ago. New distilleries are popping up all over the country and New England is home to some of the pioneers in the industry.
Distillers from New Hampshire's two craft distilleries, Flag Hill Winery & Distillery in Lee and Sea Hagg Distillery in North Hampton, will be on hand to answer questions and educate you about how spirits are being made here in the Granite State.
The owners/distillers from Bully Boy Distillery in Boston, and representatives from the Berkshire Mountain Distillery in Great Barrington, Mass., will also be available for tableside banter and to enhance your knowledge of the local craft spirit movement.
