Color Monday: Staying on trend; inviting porches; and 13 makeovers with paint

    - April 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

STILL ON TREND: This color trend post goes back to February. Nice to see how on trend she was. From Colour Me Happy:

" 'Colour is going back to the 50s and the 60s,' says colour expert, author and stylist Maria Killam. "We're seeing so much bright colour out there.'

Killam singles out cornflower blue has her favourite from this emerging colour palette. Although gray remains a popular pick for walls and furniture, accent colours are getting livelier, which means layering brighter blues over your trendy neutrals." PORCHES & PROJECTS: These porches from Better Homes & Gardens are loaded with color, which proves so welcoming. Don't you just want to sit on down with a glass of sweet tea?

And these paint projects, also from BHG, will no doubt give you some ideas.

"Houzzers, we made the call and you answered, showing us the dramatic difference you've made in your homes with paint. Today we're looking at how paint has changed your rooms, from the kitchen to the bedroom, from the living room to the laundry room."

WHAT'S IT SAY: You painted your living room yellow because you wanted a bright happy spot. Is that what the room says? Check out the meaning behind the color from House Beautiful.

Culinary programs at community colleges explode in popularity thanks to television chefs

    - April 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Culinary school enrollment Related story: Degree from expensive Pasadena culinary arts school no guarantee of a job

It was 2006 when the pilot episode of "Top Chef" aired.

At the time, the now-overcrowded culinary arts program at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington didn't exist. The three-story, $40 million culinary arts complex at Los Angeles Mission College in the San Fernando Valley was but a blueprint. Nationwide enrollment at a group of 17 for-profit culinary schools owned by the company Career Education Corp. had yet to explode.

Is there a link between the blazing-hot popularity of food TV - led by "Top Chef" - and the booming market for culinary arts classes? Students and instructors alike say without a doubt.

"It brought a business and industry to light that was pretty much behind the kitchen door," said Steve Kasmar, chairman of the culinary and baking program at Los Angeles Trade Tech, home to the oldest continuously running culinary arts program in the nation. "They did glorify it. "

Regardless, in just three years, the annual student load of the culinary curriculum at Los Angeles Mission College has more than doubled, from 250 to 600. And that's not just because of the fancy new facility, which boasts seven spacious kitchens, each of them equipped with cutting-edge video technology a la the cooking shows. The surge is also happening at Trade Tech in downtown Los Angeles

Both of those schools have multimillion-dollar kitchen remodels in the pipeline, largely to accommodate the onrush.

"I'm packed with more than 60 kids per class - the cap is supposed to be 25," said Giovanni Delrosario, who runs the 5-year-old program at Harbor College. "We have 90 more students on the waiting list. It's phenomenal; I've never seen anything like it. "

Although the stampede for these classes is no doubt largely the product of an intangible trend - the term "gourmet" is becoming so ubiquitous it can even apply to ketchup - the food entertainment craze is a clear contributor. The popularity of TV cooking shows began heating up in the mid-2000s and reached a boiling point in 2012. (Soon after hitting an all-time high, ratings for the Food Network cooled slightly in the fourth quarter of the year.)

"It's more glamorous now - we look at chefs like rock stars," said Julie Valenta Kiritani, who recently finished a program at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena.

Parishoners vote to save Lamont County church

    - April 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Parishoners have voted to save the 89-year-old Spaca Moskalyk Ukrainian Church located just north of Mundare in Lamont County.

About 90 people attended a meeting Saturday afternoon to vote on the churchs future.

The building was originally slated to be destroyed in a controlled burn after it was determined that the structure had an unstable foundation, but public outcry to save the church delayed its destruction.

Parishoner Cliff Moroziuk said that the possibility of a controlled burn was not even brought up at the meeting held Saturday. Instead, he said, the focus was on what needed to be done to preserve the church.

I think the fact that there was so many people out there really made the people who were against it take a second look, said Moroziuk.

In the end, two Edmonton-area companies stepped up and pledged to cover the cost of the much-needed foundation replacement.

On top of that, attendees set a fundraising goal of $100,000 to be reached by Sept. 30, 2013. That money will go towards roofing costs, window replacement, new eavestroughs and a fresh coat of paint for the church.

Moroziuk said it is hard to describe the relief he feels following todays vote.

Ive had $40,000 in pledges come to me already today, and to see all the people come out who really want to see the church being preserved as a legacy to the people who are buried there.

He says the biggest challenge now will be to raise the $100,000 needed by the September deadline.

    Board to discuss roofing

    - April 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Neosho R-5 Board of Education is expected to award a bid for a new roof on the east building of South Elementary School as it meets Monday night.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the administration building, 418 Fairground Road.

Three contractors have responded to a request for bids. They were RSS Roofing, $172,440; Joplin Roofing, $166,590; and Kirberg Roofing, $142,950.

During a work session Thursday, board member Steve Douglas expressed concern about roofing projects in general. Douglas said the district has been using Tremco roofing products. While he didnt dispute the quality of the materials, he said using Tremco products discouraged contractors who use competitive products from considering the work. This, in turn, could keep the district from getting more competitive bids on roofing projects.

[Tremco] will go to a school district and tell them we will do the specs for the project and let it out for bids for you, Douglas said in a telephone interview Saturday night. They let it out for bids, but the specs will refer to specific patent numbers, patents that Tremco holds. And at the bottom of the spec sheet is the words prepared by Tremco. When contractors see that, they think Tremco has this all sewn up.

Douglas said trying to include other materials in the projects at this juncture in the South School project would likely delay it until after the 2013-14 school year has begun. He said such a delay would be unacceptable and that the project needed to be completed this summer.

But, he added, he would like to discuss it at Mondays meeting in order to make the bidding process more fair in the future.

Meanwhile, two companies have submitted bids for tuckpointing work at Central School and sealing and painting exterior walls at South Elementary.

Branco Enterprises bid $79,000 for the Central project and $56,000 for the South School renovations. Meanwhile, MTS Contracting put in a $51,500 bid for the Central work, and $22,500 for the work at South.

The board is also expected to vote on a change order for a new scoreboard at the softball field.
