Farm chicken sheds for Clun beauty spot site

    - March 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Four giant sheds housing up to 180,000 chickens are set to be built at a farm in a Shropshire beauty spot after planners gave the scheme their blessing.

J Gwilliam and Sons will be build the 300ft-long sheds on the farm in Guilden Down, Clun, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,

The plans will also see two jobs created, one for a full-time poultry manager and the other for a part-time worker in the farms sheep and arable businesses.

The sheds will be 80ft wide and 15ft high and clad in steel sheeting coloured dark blue. Each will house about 45,000 chickens.

A farm road is planned as part of the scheme which will connect broiler sheds to the A488 Bishops Castle to Clun road.

Shropshire councillors praised the scheme during yesterdays South Planning Committee meeting in Westgate, Bridgnorth, which received two letters of objection.

Councillor Milner Whiteman said: It seems to be naturally well hidden and has received very few objections.

The application will also take much of the traffic out of the centre of Clun.

Its the sort of development we are going to be seeing more of Shropshire and it should be encouraged.

Councillor Madge Shineton said she was satisfied there would be extensive landscaping around the sheds.

Report Sheds Light on Surgery-Related Deaths

A new report out today sheds light on the death rates from four areas of surgery and anaesthesia, and recommends improvements to the way patients are assessed for risk.

The Perioperative Mortality Review Committee (POMRC) has released its second report to the Health Quality & Safety Commission (the Commission), and this is available from the Commissions website at http://www.hqsc.govt.nz.

The POMRC, which operates under the umbrella of the Commission, reviews deaths related to surgery and anaesthesia which occur within 30 days of an operative procedure.

The Chair, Dr Leona Wilson, says it is reported that an estimated 230 million-plus major surgical procedures are carried out around the world each year, but the risks of death related to surgery and anaesthesia are still not well known.

We wanted to contribute to the health sectors knowledge of mortality rates and further understand the strengths and weaknesses of the national data sets we were drawing information from, says Dr Wilson.

Professor Alan Merry, Commission Chair, welcomes the report.

Understanding the risks associated with surgery is essential for assisting patients in making appropriate choices between health care options, for improving the safety of surgery and for ensuring the best value is obtained from the resources invested in health care, he says.

For example, this report illustrates the tragedy and waste that occurs when a patient dies from a pulmonary embolism that could potentially have been prevented.

The POMRC report drew on data from the National Mortality Collection and the National Minimum Dataset to examine death rates in four clinically important areas:

Home remodeling goes social as tech startup transforms industry

    - March 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home remodeling, one of the biggest industries in the country, is being transformed by the Internet with a push from a fast-growing startup in Silicon Valley.

Until recently, a homeowner thinking about remodeling would have checked out books from the library, read some design magazines, asked friends for advice and tried to find help on the Web.

But in January, 14 million people turned instead to Houzz, a small Palo Alto, Calif., company that has grabbed the $300 billion remodeling industry by the tail and is changing the way homeowners connect with design professionals and figure out how they want to improve their homes. And it's taking off just as the housing market is rebounding and giving homeowners more equity to play with.

It's the latest example of the way the Internet has disrupted an entire industry, having already transformed everything from publishing to entertainment. But this is with a twist: Rather than hurting established players in the remodeling business, sites like Houzz are likely to benefit them by bringing them more business more efficiently.

"Houzz has had a huge impact in the residential design community," said Mark Demerly, an Indianapolis architect and recently chairman of the American Institute of Architects' custom residential network. "We ask our clients to seek out things on it they like and that inspire them."

Created four years ago by Alon Cohen and Adi Tatarko, who were remodeling their Palo Alto home, the home-improvement site quickly caught on across the U.S. and in Canada.

"Clipping things out of design magazines seemed so antiquated," Cohen recently recalled. "Today everything is online. We thought, 'There's got to be a better way to do this.' "

Houzz's iPad and iPhone apps have been downloaded 6 million times. It has 14 million visitors a month - up from 1.3 million downloads and 4 million visitors a year ago - who pore over 1.2 million images of remodeling projects with links to 188,000 architects, designers and other professionals. In a little more than two years, it has drawn $48.6 million in three rounds of venture funding.

The revenue comes from advertising by national brands and a professional subscription package launched a few months ago.

Now competition is emerging. Last month, the Seattle-based home-valuation site Zillow introduced Zillow Digs, a similar service. Zillow spokeswoman Cynthia Nowak said it's "a huge market," citing a study that found that nearly 25 percent of recent homeowners completed a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project last year.

Power Home Remodeling Group™ Expands Into Illinois, Creating Hundreds of New Green Jobs

    - March 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

CHESTER, Pa., March 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Power Home Remodeling Group, one of the nation's largest home remodeling companies, has expanded its operations in Rosemont, Illinois ushering in hundreds of new, green jobs in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Power has already hired more than 75 employees in the Chicago region with plans to create at least 150 additional jobs in 2013. The company will host an official ribbon cutting today at its Rosemont offices with the support of state and local elected officials, including Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Mike Quigley, as well as Rosemont Mayor Bradley Stephens.

"We are thrilled to expand into the Chicagoland area and to introduce Power to the Midwest," said Corey Schiller, Power's chief executive officer and partner. "This expansion will increase our footprint beyond the east coast to provide more opportunity to both current and prospective employees looking for employment in the green jobs sector. We're committed to working toward our goal of being the leading home remodeler with a focus on green products and energy efficient, environmentally friendly solutions to help homeowners enhance their home and reduce their energy consumption."

Power's burgeoning success in a rebounding economy is due in large part to the administration's energy efficiency tax credits for homeowners, state and federal support for green-collar job growth and the company's commitment to investing in a green workforce and renewable energy solutions. In 2011, Power expanded into three additional markets including Boston, Long Island and Atlanta accompanying its existing PA, NJ, MD and CT territories. As a result of this aggressive expansion, Power has added more than 600 jobs to the economy. Power's portfolio of innovative, energy efficient exterior remodeling solutions includes replacement windows, siding, roofing, entry and garage doors, home insulation, and more.

"Green jobs are the jobs of the future, as Power Home Remodeling Group's success shows," said Senator Dick Durbin. "Power has built on the momentum generated by federal energy efficiency programs to boost employment across the country while helping homeowners cut costs. With the company's expansion to Rosemont, we can now expect more of those next-generation jobs right here in Illinois. I congratulate Power on its growth in the Midwest and look forward to the economic growth it will bring to our state."

"I'm proud to have such an environmentally conscious business like Power Home Remodeling Group in our district and appreciate their commitment to long-term sustainability. The new green jobs created by Power are exactly the type of innovative opportunities our community needs to move the economy forward," said Congressman Mike Quigley.

Additionally, Power will continue its support of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) in celebration of its expansion to the Chicago region by donating $10,000 to help fight pediatric cancer and support ALSF's efforts in the region, including a previous childhood cancer research grant totaling $200,000 awarded to the University of Chicago. Recognizing the financial burden that families often encounter who face the need to travel for childhood cancer treatment, ALSF has also provided more than $11,000 to families traveling to Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago through its Travel Fund program.

Power announced its initial national sponsorship of ALSF in April 2011 and has committed to donate portions of its sales in an effort to raise awareness of pediatric cancer within each of the markets it offers home improvement services. To date, Power has donated more than $300,000 to ALSF. Power also extends a 25 percent discount, in addition to any current promotions, to members of the local police and fire departments.

Emergency Plumber Reports on Record Breaking Month

    - March 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The specialists at Emergency Plumber have responded to news that 2013 is set to include the second coldest March on record, providing a boost to the nationwide plumbing industry.

    (PRWEB UK) 27 March 2013

Naturally the plumbing industry is largely influenced by weather patterns. On average a cold spring can cause a 40% increase in demand for emergency plumbers. Due to the cold winds, this month has also brought a high demand in boiler repairs and the team at Emergency Plumber have noticed a significant increase in the number of customers requiring an emergency plumber for boiler related issues.

Weather conditions over the next few years are predicted to be just as extreme with hot summers and bad winters expected. Due to the unpredictable nature of the current climate and environment, it is becoming more essential to stay on top of plumbing issues.

Martin Smith, founder of Emergency Plumber shares his thoughts on the matter.

With high boiler demands and a decline in emergency gas plumbers it is becoming more essential to stay on top of plumbing issues. At Emergency Plumber we recently reached 300 plumbers and engineers, so customers can rest assured theyll be able to find someone fast in their local area.

We would also advise people to ensure their boilers are up to date during the summer months to avoid what is sometimes referred to as the Boiler Rush.

Snow and icy temperatures are expected to continue across the Easter weekend.
