Contractors plan to complete a project to replace a flood-damaged retaining wall in Sheshequin Township this week, township supervisors learned Monday.

The project's contractor, Dycon Construction Northeast LLC of Pine City, N.Y., plans to install matting for an erosion control blanket and put the finishing touches on the Grange Hall Road retaining wall this week, said Micah Baker of Joe Hunt and Associates, which designed the replacement. The matting will be installed on steep slopes to prevent deterioration, Baker said.

Water flow deflectors will also be installed into the bedrock to direct water away from the wall, preventing further damage, Baker said. The deflectors will be made of either concrete or a combination of rubber and neoprene, he said.

Supervisors awarded the project to Dycon, which bid $101,190, in November. The project involved the removal of the existing eroded fieldstone wall and construction of a replacement concrete block wall.

The project, made necessary after flooding in Sept. 2011 damaged the wall, will be reimbursed by federal and state emergency management agencies.

Supervisors also voted 2-1 Monday to advertise for applicants to fill the township's road master position. Chairman Les Wanck voted against advertising the position.

Boyd Shores has served as acting road master since Gerald Place resigned from his duties as road master and supervisor in November.

Supervisors also moved Monday to advertise the township's spring cleanup dates. Spring cleanup is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 4 and May 11.

Skate Guitars are repurposed from old skateboard decks

Though looking street-worn, beaten and abused can actually be a rather favorable look for a skateboard deck, there comes a time when stylish scuff gives way to unsightly eyesore and it's time to break in a new board. Rather than simply throw away all that quality wood, offbeat Argentinian luthier Ezequiel Galasso and pro skateboarder Gianfranco de Gennaro Gilmour have teamed up to repurpose old boards into "born to shred" guitars.

Unfortunately, there's not a great deal of information available about Skate Guitars. We do know that each guitar is actually made from the remains of at least two end-of-life skateboards, with both the body and neck made from layered maple. Since these git-fiddles already have more than their fair share of scrapes, dings and scratches, you can really go wild without fear of inflicting too much damage to the finish something that the creators seem to encourage.

All of the instruments are handmade at the Galasso Guitars workshop in Buenos Aires, and the externally-mounted hardware (including P-90, lipstick and humbucking pickups) appears to come in a number of different configurations. Each of the thin-bodied show models photographed in the gallery sports a single volume knob and Galasso branding on the head. One or two even pack whammy bars.

Though models do look to have made their way into the hands of some players, we've been unable to get any pricing or availability information from the Skate Guitar team.

Skate Guitars breathes new life into old decks

They say its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission that is unless you build illegal decks on your Mayflower Street home.

The Zoning Board of Appeals recently surprised some audience members when the board voted against an applicants request for a continuance, based on his past behavior.

According to Building Commissioner Paul McAuliffe, Michael Getchell filed for a permit to build decks onto his home at 39 Mayflower St. in 2007, was told no, since the plan encroached on his neighbors property, and then he built them anyway.

In 2011, he was told he needed to contact the building inspector or remove the structure. Getchell then, apparently, filed for a permit. The Zoning Board of Appeals denied that request Oct. 30, 2 012 and ordered Getchell to remove the structure. He didnt.

In December, he was slapped with a $100 fine and a violation notice. Two weeks later, McAuliffe said, Getchell again filed for a special permit.

But instead of showing up for his recent hearing, Getchell sent the board a request for a continuance and was nowhere to be seen.

While ZBA members Ed Conroy and David Peck were in favor of granting the continuance, a majority of the board voted against it, and the hearing proceeded without the applicants presence.

Hes got a hot tub on his deck, Hadley LeClair, of 41 Mayflower St., told the board. If someone backs into that deck its going to drop on him. This is four feet from my property line. Its a 14-foot deck.

LeClaire said Getchell not only added the deck, he constructed a second deck on the roof and doubled the size of his shed.

We denied this application once before and it was built anyway, ZBA Chairman Peter Conner said.

Full-time technical architects working on Dynamics stand to earn a 14% salary increase, and project managers are in line for a 9% raise, according to the Microsoft Dynamics Salary Survey 2013 from Nigel Frank International, a firm specializing in recruitment of Dynamics professionals.

Technical architects also pull down some of the largest salaries among Dynamics professionals, with salaries of $148,000 for those versed in Dynamics AX, $115,000 for NAV, $144,000 for CRM and $115,000 for GP, the survey says. Freelancers can earn up to $1,100 per day.

The average freelance wage increase over the next year is 12%, and that is so attractive that 39% of full-timers would leave their current jobs to freelance.

Still, many (30%) Dynamics workers are dissatisfied with training and career development as well as their compensation. A larger percentage (48.1%) describe themselves as satisfied with their jobs and 8.5% describe themselves as very satisfied.
