August Wilson's Fences, Starring Lenny Henry, to Transfer to the West End's Duchess Theatre

The current touring production of August Wilson's Fences, which premiered at Bath's Theatre Royal in February starring Lenny Henry, is to transfer to the West End's Duchess Theatre, beginning performances June 19 prior to an official opening June 26, for a 13-week run through Sept. 14.

It is currently on the road, with remaining dates to be played at Milton Keynes Theatre (March 18-23), Oxford Playhouse (March 25-30), Theatre Cymru, Mold (April 2-6), Malvern Theatre (April 8-13) and Cambridge Arts Theatre (April 15-20).

It is directed by Paulette Randall, former artistic director of Talawa Theatre Company, who is directing her fifth play by Wilson here. Henry, who has played the title role of Othello in the West End and starred in The Comedy of Errors at the National Theatre, plays Troy Maxson, a once gifted athlete denied his turn at the big time and now struggling through daily life in Pittsburgh. Resentful of a world he believes has denied him chances at every turn, he takes out his anger on a sports-obsessed son and his loyal wife.

The play, which won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play, was originally produced at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut in 1983, beofre premiering at Broadway's 46th Street Theatre (now the Rodgers) in 1987, starring James Earl Jones as Troy Maxson. It was subsequently revived at the Cort Theatre in 2010 with Denzel Washington. It was previously seen in the West End in 1990 starring Yaphet Kotto.

Pete Sikov said he's still working with Everett building and planning officials to tear down what remains of the 1894-vintage McCrossen Building at Hewitt and Oakes avenues.

The city will work with Sikov to initiate the demolition, but also is starting its own parallel preparations, in case he fails to follow through, city spokeswoman Kate Reardon said. Whatever happens, demolition crews aren't likely to descend on the site for at least a few more weeks.

"The deadline was missed, but we all understood that there was some complexity to the process," Reardon said.

Before being gutted Nov. 8, the McCrossen Building housed 13 apartments and at least three businesses.

Fire investigators never determined the exact cause, but found nothing suspicious. Michael D. Beard, 61, died of smoke inhalation. About 40 people were displaced.

In December, a city hearing examiner ordered the sidewalk in front of the business cleared and imposed a March 15 deadline to demolish the building.

A covered walkway soon materialized, but the other requirement proved a trickier task. That's largely because the ruined building shares a load-bearing wall with the building next door at 1812 Hewitt Ave.

By Friday, city inspectors had signed off on a temporary wall to keep the adjacent building intact during demolition, Reardon said. A permanent wall must be built afterward.

Before the demolition can move ahead, the building owner or the city must complete a state environmental checklist. That step will determine whether more study is necessary before seeking a demolition permit.

As an excavator claw tore into the vacant Kansas City house, walls collapsed and dust billowed up and out over the spectators standing across the street.

But this wasnt the same dust that swirls around a baseball infield.

Dust from demolishing homes that range from 50 to 100 years old contains paint made with lead and mercury, as well as other particulates that can trigger respiratory problems.

Kansas Citys demolition practices are being called into question now that the city has started two projects that will tear down over several years more than 1,000 pre-1978 homes, mainly on the East Side.

According to state regulations, demolition dust must be kept to a minimum and should not be visible beyond property boundaries.

But news photos and videos in recent months captured two home demolitions that show clouds of dust blowing into neighborhoods.

In one case in January, in an area being cleared for the new East Patrol police station, an excavator with a huge claw ripped into a home and dust drifted over a few dozen onlookers, including city officials, residents and children.

In another demolition in September, part of the citys effort to begin ridding neighborhoods of the blight of abandoned homes, Mayor Sly James operated the equipment. Dust swelled, choking the mayor and onlookers.

Those two demolitions have prompted very different reactions from city officials.

One who oversees the East Patrol project said last week that the dust from the demolition of two homes near 26th and Olive streets should have been better controlled.
