The Board approved four-year board member Dr. John Thomas to serve as President of the Board, and three-year board member Keith Phillips to serve as Vice President. The Altus Public School District Board of Education approved this reorganization of the Board during their regular meeting held 5 p.m., Monday, March 11, in the Conference Room of the Administrative Center at 219 N. Lee.
The newest Board member Nate Covington was present.
The Board of Education also approved to accept the bid from Ricks Lawn Sprinklers to install a sprinkler system to the Altus High School game and practice football fields for the amount of $42,650. Board member Darrell Moss raised the question of whether or not it would be better to install AstroTurf for the playing field in order to help with the water conservation effort. It was discussed that the cost of an AstroTurf can reach upwards of $600,000. Superintendent Bob Drury assured that the new sprinkler system design will help save on the water bill and provide more coverage than the current sprinkler system.
After the initial roll and the flag salute led by Phillips, Dr. Thomas noted that the pay request from Vance Hunt Libraries for the High School library furniture and shelving does not require Board action because it has been already been approved by the Altus City Council. Thomas also provided that the Choice of School Enrollment period is May 6-10, and Pre-K enrollment is June 1 at AHS.
The Board approved claims and items on the consent agenda. There were no actions to be taken to amend any current polices.
Accepted school district resignations include certified personnel Pam Booker, Family Consumer Services at Altus High School, effective May 30, Joe McIntyre, Special Education at Altus Intermediate School, May 24, and non-certified personnel Maria Derruisseaux, Secretary of Adult Education, June 30, and Deanna Jones, Crossing Guard at Sunset Elementary, May 24.
Reassignments approved for 2013-2014 school year include certified personnel Kim Allen from Counselor at both AHS and Roosevelt Elementary School to full-time counselor at AHS, Gigi Brickhouse from the Intermediate School to Vocal Music Teacher at the Junior High School, Samantha Gregory from Title I to Counselor at the Intermediate School, Chuck Martin from Alternative Education at Altus Junior High School to Assistant Principal at the Intermediate school, Lori Reden to be full-time counselor at the intermediate school, and Deborah Webb, to be Dean of Students at Bulldog Academy.
Approved non-certified reassignments include Deborah Green go to ISS supervisor at the Intermediate School, and Vicki Heitert from Special Education Aide at Rivers Elementary to Custodian at the Junior High School.
Proposed substitutes, time sheet employees, volunteers, and extra duty assignments were approved by the Board.

Trial Offer by Houston Pro Services to provide 200 Solar Sync ET sensors at no cost to new lawn sprinkler installation customers in Houston. These sensors, which are usually a $300 upgrade, help conserve water and provide extra convenience to homeowners.
Houston, TX (PRWEB) March 12, 2013
The Hunter Solar Sync ET sensor assesses sunlight and temperature and adjusts the sprinkler system daily to determine evapotranspiration (ET) and adjust the irrigation run time against the programmed run time according to its seasonal adjustment value. The sensor also immediately halts irrigation in the event of rain or freezing conditions as required by Texas law.
Due to water conservation concerns, all automatic sprinkler systems installed after January 1, 2009, are required to have a rain/freeze sensor per Texas State Law. However, the law stopped short of requiring new sprinkler systems to automatically adjust and account for other changes in the environment that could reduce the amount of water wasted.
Houston Pro Services is dedicated to providing responsible landscaping solutions that are smart and affordable. According to William Santamaria, owner of Houston Pro Services, You hire a licensed irrigator to custom design your irrigation system for durability and efficiency, but you still have to make manual changes to the settings to adjust the amount of water being used. It is not a very efficient or convenient way to manage it, which is why we are offering this upgrade.
The issue with traditional sprinkler system installations is that the homeowner must change the programing based on weather conditions or seasonal adjustments, which unfortunately, just does not happen. Even the most dedicated homeowner tends to forget to adjust the settings to compensate for the changes in season or weather. Providing free Smart Sprinkler Systems on new installations will allow our customers to just set it one time and forget it, said Mr. Santamaria.
A smart sprinkler system prevents wasting water because it will only run just enough water based on sunlight, temperature, and ET throughout the entire year, unlike homeowners who make their own judgments solely according to current temperature. Commercial irrigation systems use smart sprinkler systems because water conservations and savings are extremely important for larger jobs. The water savings for large systems, which can be up to 30%, are considerable due to the number of gallons used each week. Hence, Houston Pro Services residential customers who receive a free Smart Sprinkler System upgrade will benefit by not only the convenience of the system, but will enjoy the substantial savings in the cost of running the system.
Houston Pro Services is a family owned company that specializes in landscaping, and lawn sprinkler systems based in Houston, Texas. For further information, you may contact William Santamaria at 1-713-396-3320 or visit the website at http://www.houstonproservices.com.

DeKALB Officials at the Egyptian Theatre are hoping to finish installing a building-wide sprinkler system by the end of August.
Alex Nerad, the theaters executive director, said he is working with contractors to ensure a smooth installation, and to make it appear the sprinkler system was originally part of the building.
We dont anticipate interrupting anything we already have planned, Nerad said.
On Monday, the DeKalb City Council voted 5-1 to allow the Preservation of the Egyptian Theatre organization to spend $127,400 to install a sprinkler system using money previously earmarked for other theatre projects.
The city had already allocated $374,000 to the Egyptian Theatre to pay for the air conditioning system, which leaders canceled after learning it would cost about $2 million.
The city also allocated $100,000 in tax increment financing funds to the theater as a part of its annual pledge.
First Ward Alderman David Jacobson, a frequent critic of how tax increment financing dollars are spent, cast the lone no vote Monday.
Aldermen Kristen Lash and Ron Naylor, of the 3rd and 5th wards, respectively, were absent.
City Manager Mark Biernacki said the funds remaining after the sprinkler system installation which could be almost $350,000 would be spent on a prioritized list of building improvements at the theater.
We saw no reason to direct it to nontheater projects, Biernacki said. The money was already allocated to the theater, but for different projects than what was allocated for.

Dean Clifford takes part in Ultra Marathon in northern Canada
10:21am Wednesday 13th March 2013 in News By Mike Laycock, Chief reporter
Dean Clifford, of Tang Hall, gets in some practice for the 3366 Ultra Marathon
IF youve been shivering during Yorks recent cold snap, spare a thought for Dean Clifford.
The York plumber is set to brave temperatures as low as minus 40C when he sets off on a punishing 350-mile race across the Arctic Circle next week.
Dean, 40, of Tang Hall, will have to complete about 45 miles a day, pulling provisions such as food, cooking items, clothing, sleeping kit and other safety gear on a sledge, during the eight-day 3366 Ultra Marathon in northern Canada.
He says he is at risk both of frostbite and hallucinations in the race, which has only been completed by seven people in the last five years.
My family think Im mad, said Dean, who is married to Sarah and has a daughter Ebony, 17, and a son, Harvey, eight.
Race organisers say the race can quite genuinely claim to be the toughest, coldest and windiest extreme ultra marathon on the planet, adding: This race is only for big boys and girls unless youre mad.
But Mr Clifford, who has been treated for cancer diagnosed in 2010, already has some experience of crazy challenges in extreme temperatures.

ITV recently reported that a campaign in the North West of England had revealed that 17% of homes contain unsafe gas appliances. In response, the team at Emergency Plumber have issued some advice on the dangers of carbon monoxide.
(PRWEB UK) 12 March 2013
Best known for providing fast response London emergency plumbers, Emergency Plumber also offers Gas Safe Registered engineers. As such the team are dedicated to raising awareness over the dangers of carbon monoxide and the recent statistics have prompted them to issue the following advice.
It is important to ensure that gas appliances in your home are installed by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. These also need to be checked at least once a year, to protect the safety of both you and your family.
It is also important for people to be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. It can be difficult to differentiate these between those of the flu, however be sure to look out for headaches, dizziness and nausea and loss of consciousness. If your symptoms get better when you are out of the house, this should spark warning signals too. If you are concerned you may be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, turn off your gas supply if possible, open windows to get fresh air in and get everyone outside as quickly as you can.
The team at Emergency Plumber continue to research the latest industry news and updates.
Emergency plumber is an agency run by Martin Smith. With 18 years experience in the industry, his aim to provide fast and efficient emergency plumbing engineers 24/7.
