You may remember seeing the smoke and flames over downtown in July. It took firefighters several hours to put out the fire. Now owners and employees are working in a new facility on that same property.

The companyis starting fresh on the very soil it all started decades ago on North McDonough Street, after a 67 year old structure went up in flames.

Standard Roofing Company President Pete Taylor says with the help of the community, the business never missed a beat.

"[Whatoverjoyed us] was the cooperation with the city of Montgomery, and then all the people involved in getting up back was attributed to our employees hard work and dedication and they never gave up; they just went right through and we were very pleased and feel very appreciative to everyone that helped us." Taylor said.

Taylor says construction started on this $2.4 million dollar facility in September and it was completedahead of schedule. In the meantime, a local businessman offered temporary office spaces nearby on North Hull Street.

"We had a sign up in front of the old burned down site saying we will return to our original location March 1st and we beat it by about two weeks. We moved the morning of the 18th of February," Taylor said.

A look inside: new hardwood flooring, several office spaces and even a few items that braved the fire, including this wooden table that sits in the new conference room. Next to the main office is a building that will serve as a permanent fabrication shop sometime next month.

"We feel very fortunate that things turned out the way they did," Taylor said.

Montgomery Fire Lt. Kenneth Jones says the fire was so consuming that they could not determine the cause of the fire. Lt. Jones says the three firefighters who suffered minor injuries were treated and released that same day.

Texan Roofing Enhances and Expands Katy Roof Services

After a delay of more than a year caused by a toxic contamination scare, Osborn Hill School will be getting new windows.

The project to replace the oldest windows at the Stillson Road elementary school with more energy-efficient windows was on the list of non-recurring capital expenditures presented to town boards during last year's budget cycle.

But tests required before the project could proceed revealed the presence PCB contamination at the school. PCB is a potential carcinogen.

The contamination was found not only in window caulking, but also in some flooring, wall paint, the library and the gym. The contamination registered at higher levels than allowed for an elementary school and the process of cleaning, so a remediation project was initiated at the school last August. While much of the work was completed by the start of the current academic year, the gym remains closed, and a portable structure is being used for physical education activities.

Now, with a remediation plan in place and $4.2 million for the renovations and cleanup approved in January, the Board of Selectmen on Wednesday updated the building committee charge to reflect the PCB remediation work being done in addition to the window replacement.

Selectman Cristin McCarthy Vahey said that at one point there had been discussion about possibly combining the window replacement project at Osborn Hill with one planned at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

"We definitely talked about it," First Selectman Michael Tetreau said, "but the conversation didn't get very far."

He said the projects at both schools have expanded beyond only windows, so combining them no longer made sense. A building committee is needed, Tetreau said, to qualify for state reimbursement of some of the costs.

The main building at Osborn Hill was constructed in 1958. A classroom addition was built in 1969, and the media center and kindergarten classroom expansion took place in 1997.

Installation of the new windows is expected to reduce energy costs, while the abatement of PCBs will improve indoor air quality.

Carpet Cleaning Elk Grove Announces Additional Fleet Vehicles

MARUDI: The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has allocated RM200,000 to construct a retaining wall along the riverbank at Long Ikang longhouse.

This is to address the problem of soil erosion along a stretch of 200 metres, which began a few months ago.

Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan, who visited the area on Tuesday, called on the longhouse folk affected and the village security and development committee to work closely with the district office on the project.

If there is poor monitoring, then the government would be wasting money on uncompleted projects, he said.

The Baram Member of Parliament said he has personally discussed the problem of soil erosion affecting Orang Ulu longhouses by the Baram River with Minister of National Resources and Environment Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas.

He added that RM900,000 has been allocated to the Kuala Tutoh longhouse for a retaining wall along the riverbank there.

New Delhi:The Supreme Court today reversed its January interim order banning the Andaman-Nicobar Trunk Road for tourists. The road cuts through a tribal reserve area in the Andaman and Nicobar islands where the endangered Jarawa tribals live.

Tourists are now hopeful that the road will be opened by today and they can use it to reach the Limestone cave, which falls in the prohibited zone.

There was outrage last year over a video that surfaced showing women belonging to the Jarawa tribe being paid to dance for some tourists. The video had caused much consternation, with the Central government seeking a report from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration on the alleged exploitation of the tribals; the Supreme Court in January banned the tourists from using the Trunk Road.

The court then asked the island administration to submit a notification detailing steps being taken for the safety of the Jarawa tribes.

The administration submitted the notification which declared area upto five km radius adjacent to the Jarawa Tribal Reserve as a Buffer Zone and that no commercial or tourist establishment is directly or indirectly allowed in that area.

The notification also said that no person should carry out any activity directly or indirectly which might be prejudicial to the safety, security and interests of the Jarawa tribe in any of the settlement villages.

After examining the notification on Tuesday, the top court cleared the decks for the road to be opened.

During the hearing today, the Supreme Court also examined the affidavit filed by local inhabitants who said that the Trunk Road was a vital link covering 400 villages from Baratang to Diglipur and it was being used to reach the only government hospital in the island.
