ROCKPORT (Kiii News) -
The City of Rockport is considering moving forward with a major tree removal project that is fairly controversial there for area residents.
There was a first phase of tree removal that was part of a storm water management project. That part was done, and involved more of a clear cut but also a widening and deepening of the channel through there for storm water detention.
Then, Aransas First, a local non-profit, had a grant from Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries to do additional invasive removal, and spoke with the City in the summer about continuing that initial project, not as a clear cut but as selective removal.
Over the past few months, the City has been holding meetings with stakeholders and experts to decide what the best thing to do is.
"What we've been told is that the Chinese Tallow and Brazilian Pepper are on state and federal invasive lists and noxious list, and what they do is, they're very aggressive," Rockport City Manager Kevin Carruth said. "They, over time, will choke out all of the other vegetation, and basically take over everything."
Kiii News Reporter Mike DaSilva went Live from Rockport with the details.

Firefighters are crediting a residential sprinkler system for putting out a two-alarm fire that displaced tenants in three apartments west of Happy Valley late Wednesday.
Brandon Paxton, Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman, said the sprinklers in the Town Center Station Apartments, 8719 S.E. Monterey Ave., worked so well that the fire already was out when firefighters arrived after receiving a 10:22 p.m. 9-1-1 call. Crews immediately evacuated nearby apartments and then performed salvage and overhaul to reduce damage to the building's contents while removing dangerous smoke and gases from the building.
No injuries were reported.
Paxton said the fire was contained to one apartment, but easily could have spread to other units if the sprinkler system hadn't controlled it.
He said cause of the blaze will go into the books as "accidental." He said investigators determined that one resident accidentally bumped into the knobs of a kitchen range, which turned it on and lit combustibles left on the stove top.
"The lesson here is not to leave any combustible materials on your stove," Paxton said.
A damage estimate is not yet available.
The Oregon Red Cross is providing temporary shelter the residents displaced by the fire. A disaster action team is providing immediate emergency assistance for food, as well as comfort kits and information on disaster health and disaster mental health services.

17 illegal immigrants arrested
Immigration Minister Mark Harper witnessed first hand the work being done by the UK Border Agency to crack down on the problem of illegal immigrants living in 'beds in sheds'.
The minister was joined by his colleague, Housing Minister Mark Prisk, as part of a cross government strategy to clampdown on rogue landlords who rent out these buildings illegally.
Acting on intelligence, and with assistance from Ealing Council and the Metropolitan Police Service, officers entered seven properties in Southall, West London, around 6am today.
Rogue landlords often target vulnerable people, placing them in overcrowded or poor quality accommodation. In some places people are living in squalid outbuildings or makeshift accommodation known as beds in sheds.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said: 'We are determined to crack down on immigration offenders and anyone found living or working here illegally is liable to being detained and removed. We will help those who wish to leave voluntarily but will enforce the removal of those who refuse.
'Operations like this show our determination to do whatever is necessary, working alongside local authorities and police, to enforce our laws against those who are in the UK illegally.'
Housing Minister Mark Prisk said: 'We're determined to shut down the criminal landlords that run these beds in sheds and exploit some of the most vulnerable people in society.
'Councils facing this problem in their area have a range of powers at their disposal and have been given a share of 1.8million funding to shut these unsafe and illegal outbuildings down. I want to see councils working with organisations like the UK Border Agency and others to tackle this problem once and for all.'

Lagging behind the overall economy, the industry began to rebound in 2012; continued recovery is expected over the next five years, and low interest rates will favor growth. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has added a report on the Restaurant Construction industry to its growing industry report collection.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 06, 2013
Although overall spending on restaurant construction projects declined, the fast food restaurant segment outperformed the industry average. From 2008 to 2012, spending on fast food restaurant construction projects grew at an annualized rate of 0.4%, in stark contrast to double-digit declines for the overall industry, says Moldvay. Value-priced meals were particularly appealing to cash-strapped consumers during the recession, which resulted in an expansion in the Fast Food Restaurants industry. Furthermore, fast food restaurants have also expanded their array of healthy menu options, a trend that has been particularly appealing among consumers.
The Restaurant Construction industry has a very low level of market share concentration, with the four largest companies combined accounting for less than 4.0% of industry revenue. The vast majority of firms in the industry are small-scale, local contractors that perform fewer than five contracts per year. As such, rarely does a single general contractor earn enough revenue from restaurant construction to achieve a significant share of the market. The industry's largest firms typically operate throughout a few regional states, with the occasional project in another part of the country. However, even these firms generate a very small percentage of total industry revenue. The fundamentally fragmented nature of the industry is not expected to change during the next five years.
Over the next five years to 2018, the Restaurant Construction industry is expected to continue to gain strength. From 2013 to 2018, industry revenue is forecast to rise. The industry will primarily benefit from rising disposable income, which will enable consumers to ramp up discretionary spending on dining out. As a result, restaurants are expected to undertake expansion projects shelved during the recession and increasingly enter the industry, due to its greater growth prospects, benefiting industry revenue growth.
