But thats not all Vulcan Termite and Pest Control has on tap. We know that most kids love bugs, Smith notes. Thats why for the brave younguns were bringing along our creepy crawlies. Things like live tarantulas and a firsthand look at how termites can destroy anything in their paths.

Smith is saving the best for last. Its something that all the children will be talking about for weeks. Were bringing along these gigantic Madagascar hissing cockroaches. These are the biggest roaches to ever roam the Earth. In captivity, these guys can live for up to 5 years. They feed primarily on vegetable material, so kids wont have to worry about being a snack for these enormous beasts.

To give a little more background, the Madagascar hissing cockroach is characterized by its hissing sound, large size and appearance. Their nickname, "hissing cockroach," is due to their ability to force gas through the breathing pores found on each segment of their thorax and abdomen. The Madagascar hissing cockroach is believed to be the only insect that can hiss that way. Other bugs make sounds by rubbing together various body parts.

One of the seven display gardens at the 2013 Yard Garden & Patio Show bears a definite local touch.

The Through Our Ages Thrive Outside showcase garden was designed by Aurora landscape architect P. Annie Kirk.

Its her debut, Kirk says. This was her first time designing a display garden for the Portland show, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center.

Kirk holds a masters degree in landscape architecture and has operated her Red Bird Restorative Gardens for more than 15 years.

Her partner in bringing her design to life was another Aurora enterprise, Living Color Landscape.

I designed this space to draw from the local talents we have in the Aurora-Canby-Woodburn area, Kirk said. They have been our suppliers or loaned their craft or energy to help furnish or build the garden. Its a cooperative in that way.

Not only did the 40-by-40-foot garden have to be built, it had to be built so that it could be broken down and trucked into Portland. They built the garden last week at the Living Color Landscape property on Boones Ferry Road. They started Monday and delivered it to Portland the following Monday.

Kirk chose Through Our Ages Thrive Outside as the theme for her garden, a space showing lifestyles and an interaction with nature.

It speaks to the restorative powers of nature through our lifetime, she said.

Elements of the garden include a sand fort, wishing trees, a garden gym and a swing. The elements converge in the center, which she calls the garden heart.

It's a decision just about all home buyers will face -- whether to buy a home warranty or take a pass. Having one can save you a lot of money, but only if you know exactly what's covered.

Homeowner Ernest Goss experienced something a lot of us in Texas can relate to. It was the middle of summer, 100 degrees outside and his air conditioning went out.

Goss had a warranty and it saved him a bundle.

"They came out, looked at it and said the whole unit was bad. I think $800 for a whole brand new air conditioner, install with all the fees covered," Goss said.

Goss's warranty covered the heating and cooling system. A good warranty will cover those items, as well as the heat pumps and duct work, plus the refrigerator, stove, garbage disposal and dishwasher.

Angie Hicks from Angie's List said essential plumbing coverage in any warranty should include electrical panels, wiring, drains and pipes.

"It's important to read the contract in its entirety. For example, maybe you have a plumbing issue that is inside the house. The warranty may cover it, but if it's the plumbing outside of your home it may not.

Hicks said the deductible for a good warranty should be no more than $100. Most warranty plans cost between $350 and $500 per year. Homeowners typically pay an additional $50 to $75 for each repair.

If you've got older appliances, a warranty could be well worth the cost. But, make sure the company includes an inspection so you know the condition of everything in your home before you sign.
