Mandarin Orientals Joseph Chau says the Year of the Water Snake is a challenging year. Money comes and goes fast. And snake skin/print could be bad luck By Irene C. Perez Philippine Daily Inquirer
TIN HAU, Mandarin Oriental,Manilas in-house Chinese restaurant, where feng shui master Joseph Chau recently gave his forecasts
The Chinese lunar calendar welcomes the Year of the Water Snake on Feb. 10, but according to feng shui master Joseph Chau, toting snake-skin leather items, wearing snake-print accessories or keeping a snake figure (or live animal) in your house does not guarantee good luck.
What could you do to keep the luck in? Put an electric fan or aquarium facing the northeast or south side of your house to keep the energy flowing. Fill it with gold fish instead of koi because kois are Japanese, and it will not matter.
Chau recently gave a Chinese New Year forecast in Tin Hau, Mandarin Oriental, Manilas in-house restaurant. He has been a feng shui practitioner for over 30 years, and is the go-to geomancer of popular personalities and corporations in the Philippines. He is based in Hong Kong, and has clients in Australia, Brunei, Mauritius, South Africa and the United States.
He has also been writing Mandarins annual feng shui guide book since 2001.
Lucky colors
Chau said metallics such as gold and silver are the lucky colors this year, as well as white (but never go all-white), yellow, beige and brown. Avoid the colors green, blue, gray and black.
For more luck, one may place lucky fruits on the dining table on Chinese New Years Eve: pomelo, pineapple, apple, banana, orange; plus a bunch of Chinese celery with roots.

IN the local feng shui fraternity, Shion Lim is quite the odd one out. While many practitioners of the age-old tradition use instruments and techniques that have survived the test of time, Lim innovates with a little bit of tech.
With his software engineering background, Lim has created a feng shui app called iLiuFa S8, based on the traditional Chinese compass called Luo Pan, which is used by many feng shui masters to do analyses.
The feng shui technique that I use is called Liu Fa Feng Shui, which has been practised for hundreds of years. But I have given it a new life, in line with advancements in technology.
With the iLiuFa S8 app and feng shui calculations, Lim has enabled practitioners to work from a remote location, which is quite revolutionary in this particular field.
With the aid of Google Maps and compass, they can do feng shui scanning from anywhere, anytime, says Lim, adding that the app also allows people who are interested to do their own feng shui study.
Lim has designed the app specifically to identify whether a house is being affected by pernicious external energy in the surrounding environment that may bring diseases such as leukaemia, breast cancer or stroke.
The iLiuFa S8 app is a transparent Luo Pan that is placed on the Google Map satellite images to help identify whether ones house is being affected by harmful elements.
It can also be used to determine if the location of ones bed is the cause of certain illnesses, he claims.
With the iLiuFa S8, one can also determine the best placement of furniture for better feng shui, says Lim.
How it started Lim became a feng shui practitioner soon after his father died of lung cancer in 2009.

Denzel Washington has revealed he is interested in directing the Fences film.
The Oscar-nominated Flight star is eyeing up a stint in the director's chair for the big-screen adaptation of August Wilson's Broadway play, which he previously starred in with Viola Davis, reported Empire.
"I really do want to direct [the film version]," he told the magazine.
It would mark Denzel's first directorial project since 2007's The Great Debaters - he also directed Antwone Fisher in 2002, both of which he starred in. He did not mention if he would also star in the Fences film.
The two-time Oscar winner has revealed that starring in the play, in which he won the Tony award for best actor in 2010, "reawakened" him.
"It reawakened me about the work, and my commitment to the work," explained the 58-year-old.
"I said to myself: 'I've got to dig deeper. The reason I did Fences is that Scott Rudin sent me the script August Wilson wrote - the only one of his plays that he wrote as a screenplay - to act and direct."
The 50s-set drama focuses on a rubbish collector, who is haunted by his unfulfilled dream of becoming a baseball star.

Residents who have lost their homes to landslips are facing bills totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds for their demolition amid doubts over whether insurers will pay out.
Scarborough borough council, North Yorks, is understood to have sent bills for at least 40,000 each to the owners of five demolished cottages in Whitby after condemning the homes when their gardens fell away in November (Xetra: A0Z24E - news) .
Residents of four doomed bungalows left teetering dangerously close to the cliff edge at Knipe Point, also in Scarborough, following the landslip there last month, are also expected to receive hefty invoices for the cost of knocking them down.
But the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said the councils decision to demolish the properties before they succumbed to the force of nature could mean that policy providers might not be obliged to pay out towards the work.
A spokesman said: Landslides are generally covered but it doesnt usually extend to cover demolition of the houses that is something someone has decided to do and insurance is there to cover the unforeseen.
Insurers could also refuse to pay out if the landslip is deemed to be due to coastal erosion, the spokesman said.
The council disputes the ABI claims and said some insurers had already accepted liability and paid out in full including the cost of demolition and talks were being held with others.
