PPL Electric Utilities will increase tree trimming and removal along its power lines this year to further reduce tree-related power outages and improve the reliability of electric service for customers.

Hurricane Sandy and other severe storms in the past two years made it clear that we need to do even more to eliminate potential tree trouble along our power lines, said Bill Klokis, manager of Vegetation Management for the utility. This more comprehensive approach will be a real benefit to our customers, who will see fewer power outages as a result.

Klokis said PPL Electric Utilities will invest about $40 million in vegetation management activities this year to reduce the number and duration of power outages.

The utility plans to step up efforts along its 69-kilovolt transmission lines, as well as along some local distribution lines that deliver power to homes and businesses.

We know this work isnt always popular with some individual property owners whose trees threaten our lines, but we have an obligation to deal with the problem so that all customers can enjoy more reliable electric service, Klokis said.

Over the past three years, PPL Electric Utilities has completed major tree clearing along all of its 500- and 230-kilovolt transmission lines.

The utility also has completed tree removal and trimming along its 138- and 115-kilovolt transmission lines. In addition, vegetation maintenance was completed on about 25 percent of the companys 69-kilovolt lines during 2012.

During both the fall snowstorm in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy, no tree-related outages were reported on either the 500- or 230-kV systems, where major vegetation work had already been done.

During 2013, the utility expects to complete vegetation management work along about 725 miles of 69-kilovolt transmission lines. The scope of the work will increase compared to the work done on 69-kilovolt lines in the past. It will include:

Removing trees and non-compatible vegetation from the entire PPL right of way.

CHESTER HEIGHTS MaryAnne Mitchell knew something wasnt right.

She decided to lie down at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday and was just starting to relax when she thought she heard water running. She asked her husband Jack if it was raining outside, but he replied from another room that it was sunny.

But a few moments later it was raining ... inside.

Mitchell told her husband to get out of their condominium at The Hollow at Fox Valley because she feared the noise she heard in the wall was fire. But there no fire, just water. Lots of it.

Then the sprinkler system went off, MaryAnne Mitchell said. It came through everything.

The Mitchells live on the first floor and the two condominiums above them are unoccupied. It is believed that due to the cold temperatures and lack of heat, that a pipe burst causing the water to run down. However, the sprinkler system only went off in the Mitchells dwelling.

It was like it was raining in here, MaryAnne Mitchell said.

MaryAnne Mitchell said the residents had received a notice during last weeks extreme cold stretch to keep their heat high enough so the pipes in the utility closet would not freeze. Since no one is living in the residences above them, its likely no one received notices for those two condominiums.

Since the sprinkler system was tripped, the fire company was required to investigate. Along with the sprinklers getting everything wet, the firefighters had to put a hole in the ceiling to allow more standing water to be released.

Sprinkler system leaves Chester Heights home all wet

FARGO A sprinkler system is getting credit for putting out a fire early today before it could cause significant damage to a Fargo business that makes building materials.

Firefighters responded at 12:04 a.m. to the Lavelle Co. at 3101 4th Ave. S. for a report of a commercial fire alarm and sprinkler flow switch activation.

When crews arrived, they found that the sprinkler system had extinguished a fire in a room used for staining and spray-finishing wood products, Assistant Fire Chief Gary Lorenz stated in a news release.

The fire involved a work bench with tools and staining supplies on it.

The fire caused no structural damage to the building, and there was only minor smoke and water damage estimated at $1,000. No one was in the building at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but one possible cause is spontaneous combustion of oily rags that were discarded in a metal container next to the portable work station, Lorenz stated.

The Fargo Fire Department encourages all businesses that have sprinkler systems to make sure they are professionally inspected and functioning properly, the release stated.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - When you head to Detroit's Eastern Market this weekend, organizers are asking that you leave one thing at home: Your dog. The market will begin to enforce a ban on dogs in the market's sheds.

In an announcement made Thursday, the Eastern Market Corporation said they would begin to enforce a policy that had already been posted on signs around the market.

Until now, the ban on dogs inside the market's sheds had not been enforced. That will change on Saturday, February 2, 2013.

"Eastern Market has several licensed food vendors in our sheds and stalls," the statement said. "We want to keep them around, so Fido has to go."

Market organizers point out that state regulations prohibit dogs and other animals from being near food establishments.

Organizers say they will make an exception for service dogs.

EMC will begin to enforce a policy of no dogs under the sheds or in vendor stalls and we wanted to give a heads up to all of our Friends. This policy will seems new to many because, although we had signs posted, we didnt do much to enforce the rule until now. Animals are not permitted in or near food establishments licensed by the MDARD (Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development). And, as many of you know Eastern Market has several licensed food vendors in our sheds and stalls. The burritos, Mac n Cheese, coffee, beignets and other delights provided by these vendors have been a hit with our customers. We want to keep them around, so Fido has to go.

An oil fire at a West Manchester Township farmhouse on Tuesday destroyed two sheds and might have contaminated the ground.

The fire at a rental property at 1545 East Berlin Road was caused when the resident did a "very crude field test" on waste oil that is burned in a furnace to heat the home, said Dave Nichols, the township fire chief.

Before taking the oil into the home, the man conducted the test in which he put a flame just above the surface of the oil to make sure no other flammable liquids that burn at lower temperatures, such as gasoline, are mixed in with the oil, Nichols said.

The man conducted the test on oil that, unbeknownst to him, was contaminated with a secondary flammable liquid, touching off Tuesday's blaze. He was not injured.

Nichols said it's not known what was mixed in with the oil.

Fire crews were dispatched just before 2 p.m.

Possible contamination: The waste oil was stored in 50-gallon drums in the sheds, which were destroyed in the fire, Nichols said.

On Wednesday, an environmental consultant was at the scene to determine how much, if any, oil contaminated the ground and to start to clean up the mess.

"I'm sure there will be some ground contamination," Nichols said.

AN injection of funds will allow Mens Sheds across Victoria to increase programs that "actively engage men in their local communities", says the Victorian Mens Shed Association (VMSA) president Paul Sladdin.

Men's Sheds around the state will share in a total of $700,000 in funding from the Victorian Government for refurbishment grants, Minister for Community Services Mary Wooldridge announced last week.

Grants of up to $30,000 per shed were made available to incorporated not-for-profit organisations and local government authorities that auspiced existing Mens Sheds.

Grant recipients were required to provide funding or in-kind support towards the project, taking the total value of the refurbishments to $1.2 million.

The grants, under the new Strengthening Mens Sheds Program, will allow for the redevelopment of 36 existing sheds to meet increased community demand for activities and occupational health and safety, and disability guidelines.

Examples of successful initiatives funded under the latest round include:

The Mens Shed movement has come a long way over the past five years, with more than 200 sheds operating across Victoria, Ms Wooldridge said.

The government recognises the significant role Mens Sheds play in their local communities through engaging a wide range of men, including those with disability, farmers, war veterans, retirees and the unemployed.

"They give local men the chance to meet and talk, work on valuable community projects, get involved in their community and learn about important health and wellbeing issues.

ON the snowiest night of the winter, it was not the time to be out in our sheds.

Instead, John Shuttleworth was warming up an ironic term, given the weather for a tour that will bring him to the Grand Opera House in York on March 6.

Last Fridays show was a loosening exercise for Sheffield actor and songwriter Graham Fellows long-running comic creation, the former sweet factory security guard turned clubland one-man band who mistakes platitudes for profundity and finds endless fascination in the mundane.

Removing a shard of mint from his mouth, Shuttleworth set about setting his world to rights as he pontificated on the dilemmas and perplexities of everyday life for an antediluvian man in a car coat and cream slacks.

Like America, Shuttleworth himself is an irony-free zone, although that is part of Fellowss joke. Shuttleworth is so serious that he is funny, especially when rallying the audience to sing along with his cheery songs on his misbehaving bells-and-whistles organ.

Ostensibly, Out Of Our Sheds is a forum for Shuttleworth to contemplate which is better, city life or country living, supermarket or village shop? Or should you just sit in your shed and count the cobwebs? Or so the brochure said.

In reality, the two sets were dominated by delightfully daft if disconnected songs, such as a pastiche of Nirvanas Smells Like Teen Spirit, and the patter in between was surprisingly diffident, unfocused and in need of more rapport with the somewhat quiet full house.

There have been better, funnier Shuttleworth shows and there will be again, probably in York next month, by which time the material will be match-fit.

Sheds Unlimited Announces Backyard Chicken Coop Shed Sale for February

ROY Snow and ice caused several storage sheds to collapse here Thursday, causing heavy damage to antique cars, recreational vehicles, a trailer and at least one boat.

Residents near the storage shed facility, 2775 W. 5500 South, heard the collapse just before 8:30 a.m. and called 911. The roofs on six units completely collapsed and two others suffered partial collapses.

Roy Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Comeau said the Urban Search and Rescue team was called to search each unit individually to see if anything was in the sheds. No one was trapped inside.

The sheds, each measuring about 12 feet wide, 30 feet long and 14 feet tall, are more than 20 years old, Comeau said.

"I think it was just a combination of them being an older construction as well as there was some ice buildup on them as well as snow. They were all wood construction, wood truss, wood walls," he said.

There was risk Wednesday afternoon of additional sheds collapsing. Comeau said all of the sheds had been fenced off, however, and owners were not allowed inside to get their possessions out. Contractors would have to secure the sheds before anyone from the public would be allowed inside, he said.

Carol Wiggins owns two of the storage sheds that collapsed. She said most of the tenants had "cars and trucks, and we have a camp trailer in there."

"I guess it's just stuff. It'll all work out," she said.
