Add style with retaining walls

Until they saw snakes, Jim and Mary Jo Crooks had not been concerned about the condition of the retaining walls at their Suwanee house.

But the snakes and what looked like rotting timbers prompted the couple to seek help. Several referrals later, the Crooks hired Phillip Smith and North Georgia Retaining Walls in Woodstock.

In January, Smiths company cleared the scrubby underbrush and removed several levels of rotten timber walls. In place of the stacked timbers, a block-like retaining wall system was built. The old wooden steps down the steep slope were replaced with Rockwood blocks. And to ensure safe footing, soft accent lights were built in to the risers.

Though not in the original plan, the Crooks wanted to add some useable space in their back yard. Smith built a four-foot wall and designed the circular-shaped patio at the bottom of the stairs. He installed a fire pit and created a seating wall with built-in lights.

The Crooks are delighted by the beauty of their new, functional space.

We hadnt expected it to be so pretty, said Mary Jo. We also cant wait to use the fire pit.

Retaining walls are a functional and attractive solution to uneven and sloped terrains, according to Al Pfannenstein, the national retaining wall manager for Belgard Hardscapes by Oldcastle. But retaining walls can do more.

As the trend for more outdoor living space continues, retaining walls continue to grow in popularity for their function and the aesthetics they provide in a landscape design, said Pfannenstein.

Homeowners are incorporating retaining walls into the backyard landscape designs as a way to add built-in seating, a childrens play area, an outdoor fireplace/fire pit and raised-bed gardens, said Smith and Pfannenstein. Retaining walls also create more functional areas for outdoor kitchens, patios, pools, spas, driveways or any construction that requires a flat surface.

SC clears decks for ULB polls

The Supreme Court on Friday cleared the decks for holding urban local bodies elections in Karnataka on the basis of the 2001 census.

A bench of justices H L Gokhale and Madan B Lokur made strong observations against the State government over its failure to provide the fresh list of reserved seats to the State Election Commission (SEC), saying that it did not want the will of the people reflected in the local bodies polls before the Assembly elections.

The court gave two days to the State government to furnish the list of reserved seats and in case it failed, the SEC could proceed on the present reservation of seats.

The position which emerges is, whereas the State Election Commission is keen to hold elections as required under the Constitution and the law, the State government is not inclined to hold it. The grounds given is revision of census figure and required rotation of seats in reserved category, the bench noted.

In view of the situation, the SEC is within its rights and powers to proceed with the elections as required under the Constitution and law on the basis of existing rolls. As far as reservation list is concerned, the State government is to furnish the list by February 3. In the event of its failure, the SEC can proceed with present reservation of seats, the bench said.

The court dismissed the special leave petitions filed by Raju Chavan, a Bijapur resident, and the State government, challenging the Karnataka High Court order passed in December last, refusing to issue any direction to the SEC to conduct polls as per provisional 2011 census.

Senior advocate P P Rao, appearing for the Karnataka government, urged the court to give at least three months to provide the list containing the required rotation of seats in reserved category, but the court remained unmoved.

He also suggested that as the term for the Assembly was getting over sometime in May, there would not be any difficulty to provide the list by then and both the polls could be held simultaneously.

As far as census figure is concerned, it is not in hand. As far as reservation list is concerned, the High Court has given them (State government) two occasions and informed the SEC about the manner in which it is to be done. On December 20, the High Court finally gave two days time, but they did not take any step, making the SEC to move the HC with a contempt petition, the court observed.

Porches, stairs to be checked at North Side apartment complex

The North Side woman who was injured when the porch and stairs from her second-floor apartment collapsed in the Allegheny Commons East complex remained hospitalized on Friday in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

Apartment management has agreed to hire an engineer to find out what caused Thursday afternoon's collapse in which Annette Wade, 51, was injured, and to examine and determine the safety of all the porches and exterior stairs in the complex along East Ohio Street, said John S. Jennings, assistant chief of Pittsburgh's Bureau of Building Inspections.

We are investigating the cause of this unfortunate incident, and fully cooperating with local officials, according to a statement from WinnResidential, the property management company which is based in Boston. We will take all immediate steps necessary to address any issues and to safeguard the safety of residents and visitors at Allegheny Commons East.
