If youre in a small group lunching with feng shui specialist Dr. Andy Tan, you may find out his predictions for the outcome of this years senatorial race, his outlook for the Year of the Water Snake (which, in the Chinese calendar, begins on Feb. 10), his work in clearing Malacaang of bad vibes and otherworldly visitors, and how he applies defensive feng shui for building owners whose rivals and neighbors have intentionally targeted their property.

But all these fascinating storiesand the names and locations that go with themmust remain off the record, especially since hes lunching with a group of voluble media women.

His on the record advice, especially on how to use the principles of geomancy to enhance ones luck and fortune at home and in the workplace, may be had on Feb. 7 at the LRI Design Plaza on Nicanor Garcia St., Bel-Air, Makati. Open to the public, the session with Tan will feature his own prospects and predictions for 2013 as well as practical feng shui applications for home and office interiors.

Tan comes by his title legitimately, being a medical technology and medicine graduate of UST, and his advice is sometimes peppered with medical and scientific insights. But he came by his interest in and knowledge of the esoteric world naturally, stemming from a childhood fascination with the occult and his readings and studies, as well as his association with occult researcher and writer (and Inquirer columnist) Jimmy Licauco.

His personal advocacy, he says, is to share esoteric knowledge in a scientific manner, allowing [him] to help and educate the people on the proper application of feng shui while also avoiding commercialism.

HE MAY wish to avoid commercialism, but Tan is making a pretty penny with his many consultations and long-term associations with real estate developers, contractors, homeowners and anyone who believes in aligning the physical world with the unseen but palpable other world.

So firm is his belief in the need to keep the seen and unseen in perfect sync that Tan admits to timing even the birth of his teenage son. My wife was on the operating table and the doctor was getting ready to cut her open, but I asked them to delay the birth by about four minutes, because that was the most auspicious time, he says.

One piece of advice he is willing to share: Dont put a mirror or any reflective object (like a TV set) in front of (or less than a meter away from) your bed. This is why in many hotels, the TV set is kept inside a cabinet where you can close the doors.

Plans unveiled for demolition of Ramsbottom's former cottage hospital

PLANS which could see the demolition of a cottage hospital with a 110-year history are set to be unveiled.

Around 13 homes are expected to be constructed if the old Ramsbottom Cottage Hospital, in Nuttall Lane, is razed.

But a local councillor has already voiced concern over the potential redevelopment of the property, which ceased providing medical services in May 2008.

And Coun Ian Bevan is at loggerheads with NHS bosses amid claims that neighbours have not been kept informed about the future of the site.

Coun Bevan said: I am concerned that there has been no consultation on this sale and that Ramsbottom Cottage Hospital a part of the towns heritage is now under threat of demolition.

Traffic issues are of course a problem on Nuttall Lane but it is not thought likely that it will add many vehicles to the road. Traffic would be an issue, no matter what was developed on the site.

The developers are getting the site ready they are removing a considerable amount of trees.

None of these are protected by a tree protection order. However it means residents with houses along the perimeter of the site will see loss of tree cover and will experience some disruption.

Demolition of part of the Rose Apartments building on Glen Street, the site of a Nov. 11 explosion, is to begin later this month, village Code Enforcement Officer Charles Cagle said Saturday.

That demolition will be started in two weeks,Cagle said. They (building owner Rose PropertiesAlfred, LLC) have moved forward to demolish the entire south end of that building up to a firewall. Theres a firewall that separates the two sides. Theyve got their permit in place to do that.

The explosion was on the south side of the building. Two people were injured, but neither seriously. The cause was said to be a ruptured gas line.

The southwest corner had the most damage. The entire south end cant be reconstructed. That has to come down,Cagle said. He said Allen Construction Management Inc. of Wellsville will be doing this demolition.

There is a process that will have to be completed before any rebuilding can be done on the north end of the building, Cagle said. Once that half (the south end)has been removed, another engineer will go through the north end of the building with me,Cagle said. Theres a possiblity for minimal damage (in the north end).

If no damage is found at the north end, the village will ultimately have to inspect the property, Cagle said.

I have to reinspect that building before any occupancy can take place, make sure any code violations have been addressed and all fire and safety requirements are in place,Cagle said. He said Rose Apartments is due for a village nspection in June anyway. Fire and safety inspections of rentals are required every two years, he said.

Alfred Mayor Craig Clark said Rose Properties has been cooperative with the village through this process.

"Once we get through all the paperwork, I'm looking forward to them rebuilding. I think it's good for the community," he said. "It's been needed in the community to have that style of housing."

Louis Proto of Olean, a managing partner of Rose Properties Alfred, LLC, could not be reached for comment.

LYNN A Boston Street home thats been called a blight on the neighborhood is destined for demolition.

The property owner has not been playing ball for years, said Ward 5 Councilor Brendan Crighton. Ive been dealing with this since I first came on the council.

Boarded up windows are the only outward sign that the pale yellow house that sits back slightly from the busy roadway is abandoned. The property is otherwise neat and empty of debris, but that hasnt always been the case.

Inspectional Services Director Michael Donovan said the property owner first came under fire in 2008 when he made changes to the home without proper permits, and that violated the citys building and zoning codes. Then there was an actual fire, he said.

After the fire Donovan said the owner boarded up the property and walked away.

After tracking him down, Donovan said the property owner claimed he was having difficulty with his insurance company.

At that time a lot of people were having problems with their insurance companies and mortgage companies, so the city wasnt push, push, push, he said.

Since then the property has racked up $4,265 worth of code violations that have gone unpaid and the property has continued to deteriorate.

A rodent issue came up and the whole place just takes down the quality of the neighborhood, Crighton said. Im sure there are probably health and safety issues, and I think a lot of the residents will be relieved when it comes down.
