How to Build a Retaining Wall (Time Lapse)
How to build a retaining wall - Time Lapse. In this video, there was no backfilling the trench. Only the removal of the old retaining wall and some minor leveling for the new blocks. Therefore, sand was not necessary because the risk of settling is negligible. Here is a link of a very short video to illustrate better the process of using sand and leveling the blocks. youtu.be Here is a longer video of a more detailed explanation with retaining wall theory. youtu.be 1. Layout the wall with spray paint, an edger, or stakes. 2. Dig out the area and run level strings next to the trenches for the first row. 3. The first row must be perfectly level. The first row will be easier to install if you break off the lip on the bottom with a chisel. Level on all four sides of the block to make sure you are level and even from one block to the next. 4. Use a heavy rubber mallet and hit the blocks from on top in areas you want to push the block down a little more to make adjustments. Add some sand under the blocks for areas you need to raise. 5. You can glue down every block if you choose but is unnecessary. Gluing down the cap stone will avoid someone being injured if they walk on top of the wall. 6. When cutting cap stone, you will need to remove the same amount of material on both sides of a joint so that the two stones will line up in the front and back (both are the same width). 7. When backfilling on the back side, use gravel or rock to facilitate proper drainage.

Tall Building Design and Construction (for architects and engineers)
This is my basic design for skyscrapers. It #39;s the type of building I #39;d feel comfortable living and working in. And ... it #39;s cheap ... relatively speaking.

New York (CBSNewYork) This is no dog house.
According to the Mayors Alliance for New York Citys Animals, there are as many as a million homeless animals living on the streets of New York, most of them cats. For the third year, Architects for Animals held its annual Giving Shelter fundraiser on Thursday, January 10th at Manhattans Steelcage Showroom to help those community cats brave the elements and survive the freezing temperatures.
The event benefited the Mayors Alliance NYC Feral Cat Initiative, a not for profit organization committed to solving New York Citys feral cat overpopulation crisis through the humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return, or TNR for short.
Top city architectural design firms built creative outdoor winter shelters, participated in a friendly competition and then donated the cat houses to volunteers who care for these animals. These caregivers ensure the cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, left-eartipped to identify them as having been spayed or neutered, and provide daily with food and water, and medical care when needed.
Watch video from Architects For Animals in the latest edition of All For Animals with 1010 WINS Anchor Susan Richard:
This years participating architectural teams included H3 Hardy Collaborative Architecture, Francis Cauffman Architects, M. Moser Associates, Callison Barteluce, Stonehill & Taylor Architects along with a team of students from City College, Zimmerman Workshop, Kathryn Walton of The American Street Cat (TASC) and Pilot Projects Design Collective.
