Fences are back in the city spotlight

    - January 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

TRAVERSE CITY City officials will take a peek at regulating fences after hearing complaints about 10-foot high masonry walls around residences along Division Street.

Traverse City planning commissioners directed staff to research a fence ordinance after decades of straddling what's been a contentious issue. Planners have considered an ordinance four times since 1977, but never acted.

The lack of city guidelines for fence building coupled with recent construction of a nearly 10-foot high cement wall on the west side of Division Street prompted residents Pat and Dennis LaBelle to request city action.

"It's a perfect time to address this because it's so ugly, it just sticks out, it really does," Pat LaBelle said of the new wall. "That's a good example of how bad it can get."

Such walls reduce neighborhood safety by obstructing views and give tourists the wrong impression of Traverse City, the LaBelles said.

"The unintentional message these high, solid walls sends to visitors is that there are potential crime issues and that people are not welcome in this area," the LaBelles wrote in a letter to the planning commission.

Kathie Scott lives at Fifth Street and Division and has heard criticism that residential walls make Division Street look like Detroit. She shrugs it off.

"Tough, you don't live here," she said of wall critics.

Scott tried wood fences and cedar shrubs but said they didn't help block traffic noise from busy Division Street.

"We were not able to have a conversation in the back-yard until the traffic clears, and do you know how often the traffic clears on Division?" Scott said. "Not very often."

Demolition of Puncak Setiawangsa bungalow 80 per cent completed

    - January 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Posted on January 3, 2013, Thursday

KUALA LUMPUR: About 80 per cent of demolition work have been carried out on a badly damaged bungalow in the Puncak Setiawangsa landslide, here, last Friday.

Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram) chief operating officer, Mohd Taufik Haron said there were only 20 per cent left in the demolition of the bungalow after clearing works had been carried out in the last three days.

We have not set any date or deadline for the complete demolition of the bungalow. It depends on several factors such as weather and earth movement for the safety of workers, he told reporters at the landslide site yesterday.

Mohd Taufik said the bungalow owned by Rompin MP Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis had to be demolished as there were signs of earth movement and for works on a buffer zone to strengthen the hill slope.

What can I say, Datuk Jamaludins bungalow will be 80 per cent demolished, he said.

In the incident at about 10pm, the concrete embankment built on the hill slope 50 to 60 metres high collapsed, affecting several residences including the ones owned by public figures. Bernama

Roberts Stadium demolition proceeding on schedule

    - January 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

EVANSVILLE The demolition of Roberts Stadium remains on target for completion by spring, Parks Director Denise Johnson told the Evansville Board of Park Commissioners Wednesday.

Klenck Co. is the lead contractor for the project. The Evansville company's contract is for $730,450. Johnson said a webcam that will allow residents to follow the demolition's progress still has not been installed, but it will be in a few days.

Thus far 600 tons of materials have been recycled on the site and will be crushed and used for fill. Johnson said J.H. Rudolph Co., another local company, will be at the site later this month to begin collecting asphalt surrounding the building.

Roberts was used for sports, entertainment and exposition shows in Evansville from 1956 to 2011.

In other business Wednesday, the Board of Park Commissioners voted 5-0 to waive a $10 fee charged to non-Vanderburgh County residents taking part in the city's adult sports programs.

The Department of Parks and Recreation offers softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and flag football for adults.

City Sports Director Chris Rehn, who made the request, told the parks board he's hopeful that eliminating the out-of-county fee will help grow participation in the city's programs.

Nationally, the numbers in adult recreational sports leagues have been declining, and Evansville mirrors that trend, Rehn said.

The city also has shortened the length of some of its sports seasons in an effort to get more people participating.

"Anything and everything that gets people to come out is what we in the sports business are doing," Rehn said.
