Soire Coffee Bar aims to remind West Dallas of its roots | Photo credit: Alex Gonzalez
With the opening of Soire Coffee Bar, owners Clive and LaFree Ryan and Tara McDaniel hope to bring a place of cultural value to Trinity Groves. Historically, West Dallas is a predominantly black-neighborhood, and with Soire, the owners hope to remind the neighbors of the districts roots.
Soire offers jazz-themed coffee beverages, cocktails and food. The shop boasts a stage and a grand piano, suitable for live music performances.
This concept was birthed from a need in Dallas, says McDaniel. We knew that there werent too many black owned coffee shops, specifically in the DFW Metroplex. As a culture, we love music. Black people have really been phenomenal music influencers for years, so we thought it would be cool to merge the two; peoples love for coffee and music.
Signature lattes include a salted brown sugar latte called the Ella Fitzgerald and a honey lavender latte called the Lena Horne. Additionally, Soire offers spiked coffee beverages, including the Louis Armstrong, a maple latte with caramel flavor and bourbon.
Soire boasts a long bar with a granite countertop | Photo credit: Alex Gonzalez
For food, Soires menu consists of light bites, like their monte cristo sandwich, made with ham, turkey, jack cheese and strawberry jam on a french toast flatbread. Their signature Soire salad consists of romaine lettuce, fajita chicken, sliced strawberries, pecans, parmesan cheese and poppyseed dressing.
Inside Soire are granite countertops, couches and small tables for gathering and a bar. Upon opening, there will be live musical performances, where guests can enjoy jazz and blues at a safe social distance.
Soire Coffee represents community and camaraderie in a cup, McDaniel says. We wanted to bring a sense of community and culture here to Trinity Groves and we wanted to come in here and plant our feet here as a community with so much history.
Soire Coffee Bar is located at 320 Singleton Blvd Suite 190, Dallas. Their grand opening celebration will take place Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8 a.m.

Tracy Kruse didnt start out to be one of the few women in construction, but it is a role she has enjoyed. The daughter of a high school shop teacher, Kruse was looking for work after college and ended up building movie sets in the Twin Cities. After a few years traveling and juggling family commitments, she told her Seward neighbor, Joe Buck, that she was interested in a change. He offered her a job on his crew. This year, Kruse and fellow long-time employee, Jason Manthey, are taking over from Joe and his brother Bob.Our company was started in 1983 by Bob and Joe Buck, with the goal of concentrating on remodeling urban core homes and respecting the historic design and detail of these homes, observed Kruse. We will continue our commitment to providing high-quality service to our community. She added, We have worked on older, single-family homes for over 35 years, and understand the challenges that these homes present. Over the years, weve handpicked a project team that can work with homeowners to design the space, anticipate the issues that older homes present and manage the construction of the project.Read on for more from Kruse.
Scott Vetsch installs new windows on the upper level of a Minneapolis home.
How has COVID-19 changed how you operate?COVID-19 has changed many aspects of how we run our jobs. One thing we have always been proud of is running a tight schedule. With lead times on materials becoming longer and longer, it has created some challenges. We require our staff and subs to wear masks and gloves as possible while on the job site. We have created washing stations on the job sites. We are not having more than one trade at the job site at a time, which has also increased the length of our projects. Social distancing can be a challenge in construction as many tasks take more than one person, for example installing windows. While working in homes, we isolate ourselves as much as possible with plastic barriers. At the end of each workday, we sanitize any areas that the homeowner may come in contact with, handrails etc. What trends do you see right now?Families are looking for more liveable space in their homes with many people staying home. We have seen an increase in basement remodels and additions. How do you seek to be environmentally friendly in your business practices?
Jason Manthey and Tracy Kruse are the new owners of Buck Brothers.
Weve always been proponents of energy-efficient design and construction, and our projects have won awards from Minnesota GreenStar. We have extensive experience at providing clients with creative options for building projects that conserve energy and promote efficiency. What sets your business apart? Our extensive experience has enabled us to build a team of designers, field staff, and sub-contractors who provide the quality service and high value that our clients demand. Homeowners need to trust the tradespeople who work on their projects to provide quality and stay on schedule and on budget.

Syd and Shea McGee have been blowing up in a big way ever since they started their interior design company Studio McGee in 2014, following it up with an e-commerce business called McGee & Co in 2016. The husband and wife duo from Utah has been steadily gaining followers on Instagram ever since Shea debuted her interior design projects on the social media platform almost a decade ago. But their popularity really hit the roof with the release of their Netflix series Dream Home Makeover.
The reality series premiered just ahead of their book launch in October 2020. Dream Home Makeover follows Shea and Syd McGee of Studio McGee as they undertake home renovation projects for clients while also working on their own dream home that theyre building from the ground up. Curious to know where Dream Home Makeover is filmed and where the McGees live? Weve got all the information for you right here.
Since they take on renovation and interior design projects all across the US, filming for season 1 of Dream Home Makeover was done entirely on the location of their various ongoing projects, most of them in Utah. Here are the specific details for the different filming locations.
Almost every episode saw Shea discuss designs with her team of designers at the Studio McGee offices in Lehi, Utah. Filming was done on the chic premises, located at 3900 N Traverse Mountain Blvd, Suite 203, Lehi, UT 84043.
A few scenes were filmed inside the warehouse of their e-commerce company McGee & Co. The warehouse is located at 13648 S 200 W, Draper, Utah.
One of the episodes sees Syd and Shea do the interiors of their neighbors across the street from their own new house in a quiet suburban area in Utah County. A substantial amount of filming was also done in the McGees own home.
In the first season, Syd and Shea remodel a couples unutilized room into a cozy dining and family room in the city of Kaysville in Davis County, in northern Utah. They also take on a project to renovate a familys loft space inside a historical home which is located in the city of Farmington, located in the same County. For another home renovation project (the remodeling of a cramped kitchen), the filming crew of Dream Home Makeover headed to the picturesque city of Layton, that lies between the Salt Lake City and Ogden areas.
In one of the episodes, Syd and Shea head to North Salt Lake City to build a swanky theatre room in a British bachelors basement.
Syd and Shea spend one episode in LA, their old hometown, while doing the interiors of a home nestled in the hills of Los Angeles. They also filmed inside the brick and mortar store of McGee & Co., which used to be located in Costa Mesa but had to shut down because of the Coronavirus pandemic. It used to be located at this exact address before it was closed permanently 1720 Santa Ana Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92627.
Syd and Shea McGee spent the last five years living in rental homes because they had sold off their California home and invested every penny in establishing their two businesses. They finally bought land in Lehi, Utah a lovely, secluded cul-de-sac away from the hustle and bustle of the main city and started building their dream home from the ground up.
While filming Dream Home Makeover, the McGees moved out of their last rental and into their gorgeous mansion in Lehi. In every episode of the series, their home features quite a bit, and viewers can see the husband and wife team lovingly set up their dream home.

Welcome to the club.
Its the first message that greets you upon visiting The Dad, a nod of acknowledgment that may seem like little more than a cool tagline that is, until you realize what being a member of the club actually means. Being a dad is an experience like no other. Its beautiful and stressful and exciting and exhausting all at once. It comes with challenges that only other dads can understand. Being a member of the club means being surrounded by people like you, and people very unlike you but with one important thing in common: fatherhood. It doesnt take long to realize just how deeply members of The Dad community care for each other, and that level of support extends far beyond things strictly related to fatherhood. When a member of our community celebrates, we all celebrate. If one of us needs help, the response is so enormous its almost deafening. And when we experience a tragedy, we mourn together.
On October 7, one of our own tragically passed away. RJ Barry was a father, gamer, and a valuable member of The Dad Gamings Rocket League community. RJ loved playing Rocket League and Call of Duty, racing 4 wheelers, skateboarding, but most importantly, the 29-year-old loved his friends and family. Particularly, his daughter Vivian.
The loss of RJ hit The Dads gaming community hard RJ had been an active member of The Dads Rocket League group since February, participating in weekly Tuesday game nights and befriending dads around the world. RJ was a skilled gamer, regularly making the playoffs and winning tournaments. But more importantly, RJ was a great friend and an amazing dad.
Jon Melo was just one dad who RJ befriended through The Dads Rocket League group, as the two dads played regularly on the same team (and somehow, lost regularly on the same team). Of course, the one week the two separated, both made the semi-finals before RJs team went on to win the tournament. We always said were going to win it together, Melo recalled.
Honestly I cant say enough about him, Melo said. He just was such an easy-going person and always there to listen to you if you needed someone. A lot of dads on here would say he was one loving outgoing fun guy to play with and was always positive.
But for gamer friends and non-gamer friends of RJ, there was one constant: That man loves his daughter and he would do anything for her, Melo concluded.
The loss of RJ left gamer dads near and far both shocked and saddened. But with the enormous grief that came with the RJs passing came something beautiful a community coming together to mourn and celebrate the life of a friend.
A post shared by Garrett Van Ginkel, The Dad Gaming Rocket Leagues admin highlighted the true nature of what it means to be a member of The Club. Its about far more than gaming and memes its about having a place to celebrate lifes wins and grieve lifes losses, and never having to do either alone.
Garretts touching post explained how after RJs passing, members of the community came together to honor their fallen teammate. Together, the group came up with ideas to honor RJ, who played by the name Tartarus. We will be holding a 1 minute moment of silence at kick off of the first round of play, Garrett explained.
During the moment of silence, each team of 3 loaded in with only 2 players to symbolize that we were all missing a player, Garrett told The Dad.
And silently, beautifully, the incomplete teams paid their respects.
We are permanently retiring Team 21, Garrett continued. It was a common team for him to be on due to his rank, and it was the last team he played for in our tournaments. Moving forward, it will be known as Team Tartarus.
Watch the moment of silence:
The group even moved their efforts outside the confines of the internet. Garrett explained, I have set up a PayPal account to take donations for his daughter Vivian and his family. We will be promoting it on stream during the tournament, and have it displayed on the overlays so anyone that tunes in will see it. Once all donations are in, I will personally write a check to his family for the full amount in the PayPal account. The email address to donate is: [emailprotected]
As dads, we want nothing more than to be there for our kids, to take care of them. In RJs memory, the group is collecting money which will go to a trust in Vivians name. Though the trust will provide financial assistance to Vivian one day, it represents so much more than money its emblematic of the true nature of being a dad. If theres a problem, you try to fix it. If you cant fix it, you do everything you can to help, and you do it with a whole lot of love.
RJ will be forever missed by both his friends and family, but he will always be remembered and he will always be a member of The Club.

The couple pulled Lyons Police Sgt. Cory Ryan into their vehicle during a shootout and drove him to the hospital.
Lyons Police Department
LYONS, Kansas -- Wyatt Johnsonand his girlfriend were driving aroundLyonson Friday while she reminisced about her hometown. They were wasting time before a wedding rehearsal.
In southeastLyons, near the home of one of her childhood friends, the couple saw an officer at a door and then heard shots ring out. Sgt.Cory Ryanwas responding to a call from a man who was mowing the lawn when he was threatened by a neighboring man with a gun at around3:40 p.m.
The officer arrived at the home of the alleged shooter, 40-year-oldAdam Hrabik.
Johnson said he couldn't see the shooter but saw the "blast from the gun."
Ryan backpedaled.
Johnson said he believes Ryan had already been shot in the arm and chest before the officer got out his gun in self defense. Ryan, who was also shot in the face, fired back.
Johnson's girlfriend put the car in reverse, drove it 10 feet and turned the car sideways to create a barrier. Johnson pushed his girlfriend out the driver door and followed her out to put more distance between them and the shooter. He was on the phone with 911 while the two of them yelled for Ryan to come to them.
Johnson said it was like they practiced it before.
Shots continued to ring out.
The two pulled him into the car.
Johnson's girlfriend handed Ryan a towel to staunch the blood and tried to calm him. Johnson drove.
"He was trying to speak but he couldn't because the whole bottom of his jaw was gone," said Johnson, a 24-year-old who works for a tree service company.
They took him to theRice County District Hospitalon the west side of town. Ryan, 36, was then transferred to aWichitahospital.
As Ryan was being cared for, the shooter retreated into the his home, according to theKansas Bureau of Investigation.
Officers in the region started to descend on the home, bringing tactical gear and an armored vehicle.
The first officers to arrive also discovered that the man mowing the lawn, who identified himself on Facebook asBrian Friess, had been shot.
Lyonspolice chiefJustin Hollidaywas one of the officers who found Friess wounded and helped bring him to safety.
Friess, theLyons High Schoolboys basketball coach and the school district's 2020 Ray and Evelyn Lippelmann Outstanding Teacher, was also taken to theLyonshospital and then onto aWichitahospital.
On Saturday, he posted on Facebook that he had been shot in the left thigh and below his right lung.
"Both bullets will stay in my body -- it's not like the movies where they go after em!" the 56-year-old wrote, adding doctors are keeping an eye on the bullet lodged in his lung. "Thank you to EVERYONE for the nice words! I'm blessed to live inLyonsand Coach/teach at LHS!"
The standoff at the home lasted until around7:10 p.m.when officers convinced Hrabik to come out of his home. He was arrested and booked into theReno County Correctional Facility, according to the KBI.
Ryan, who has been with theLyons Police Departmentsince 2012, is in critical condition but is stable, according to Sterling police chiefDerrick Ploutz.
"I absolutely think they saved his life by doing what they did," Ploutz said, adding each second matters in a shooting.
The Sterling Police Departmentis helping supportLyonswhile it is down one officer. About the response from surrounding law enforcement agencies coming to help, Ploutz said:
"The response and the help that we give each other, I don't know any other place I would rather work," Ploutz said, adding: "We are small departments inKansasbut we always know that we got each other and when we are needed, everyone is going to be there."
A fund has been set up at theLyons Federal Bankto help cover medical costs for Ryan. Donations can also be dropped off at theLyons Police Departmentand theFirst Bankin Sterling and will be forwarded on to the fund for Ryan.
