Our Northwest news offers some advice tonight - If you order Christmas gifts online or send packages to family, be careful of where you send them. Packages left on doorsteps are easy prey for thieves. In Seattle four people were arrested on suspicion they were driving around stealing packages from front porches. Police credit sharp-eyed neighbors for helping catch the thieves. The Seattle Times reports that a woman at one house reported seeing a man run off with a UPS package late Friday morning and get into a white Toyota van. At mid-afternoon, a woman was seen jumping out of the same van at a different residence. An officer spotted the van, pulled it over and found three men, one woman and several packages. The packages have been returned. The four people were booked into the King County Jail for investigation in the robberies and for outstanding warrants. You could be paying more in the future for new brake pads for your car. Manufacturers of brake pads are gearing up to meet a first-in-the-nation Washington state law requiring they phase out the use of copper and other heavy metals. In 2010 the state banned the use of copper in brake pads, as a way to prevent the metal from polluting waters and harming fish. When brakes wear down, they release copper shavings onto roads and are eventually washed into rivers. Back to My Roots - Austria - August 2 - 1
This video was taken on August 3, 2007. Departing early in the morning, my brother, sister-in-law, the dog and I went on our out-of-country excursion. On a gorgeous day we drove from the Austrian province of Styria through the adjacent province of Carinthia to the Austrian border with Italy. At the border town of Tarvisio we turned left and started heading towards the border with Slovenia since we wanted to go hiking in the Slovenia Alps. We made a quick stop at the Predil Lake, a gorgeous Alpine Lake with enchanting turquoise and green waters. Then we headed further up the mountain and showed our passports at the border crossing with Slovenia. Unfortunately the engine of our car overheated and we had to call off our mountain excursion. Instead we decided to drive back to Italy and take the cable car to the top of Monte Lussari, a peak in the Northern Italian Alps, just south of Tarvisio. Once arrived at the top we walked around the summit area and explored the little mountain top village which features a medieval church and several restaurants with outdoor patios that provide phenomenal mountain vistas. We enjoyed a hearty lunch and spent some more time at the summit before we took another cable car down into the valley and drove to Tarvisio to do some vegetable shopping in this Italian town. Highlights of My Sicilian Sailing Trip 17
What a concept - learning Italian on a sailboat!!! In May of 2007 I did just that: with 4 other Italian students I boarded the Solitaire II, a 4-cabin sailboat, to study Italian sailing through the beautiful Eolian Islands of Sicily. We were in the capable hands of Francesco, our captain, and Franco, a gifted guitar player, both of them teachers from the Laboratorio Linguisitico Italian Language School in Milazzo, Sicily. We spent a whole week sailing through gorgeous places such as Lipari, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea and Vulcano, and we had Italian lessons on the boat or in various outdoor bar patios on different islands overlooking the Mediterranean.
