Mexico City small apartment twists with affordable OSB wood
When Carlos Ortega returned to Mexico after 8 years in Paris, he found "things were starting to happen" in the country #39;s capital. After working for Givenchy for 6 collections, in addition to collaborating with Vuitton, Chanel, Herms, he decided to launch his own fashion line. He chose Mexico City #39;s Polanca district where rents are high so in order to keep costs low he settled on a small apartment by Mexican standards. In order to divide the 65-square-meter (600 square feet) space into public and private spaces he hired ROW architects to create something affordable yet with a sense of style. Architect Alfonso Maldonado and his partners chose an engineered wood- OSB (oriented strand board) panels- in order to carve the rented space to Ortega #39;s tastes. One long, diagonal OSB wall divides the entire apartment, separating the private- bedroom, bathroom and closet- from the public- living room/showroom. The wall twists both to carve out nooks - like a tiny desk/tv space in the bedroom or a bookshelf for Ortega #39;s extensive collection. The warped walls are also a very easy way to grow a small space. Xiqu Centre design chosen (10.12.2012)
A design by Hong Kong-born architects Bing Thom and Ronald Lu has been selected for the Xiqu Centre at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Chief Secretary Carrie Lam said the design presents an iconic image and features aesthetics from the East and West. It is also functionally outstanding with the best backstage arrangement, she added. It has two auditoria of 1100 and 400 seats and a traditional Tea House for an audience of up to 280 people. Construction will start next year, with the centre opening in 2016. "The Xiqu Centre is the first major art facility of the cultural district. It also serves as the Eastern entrance to the area. This underlines the importance the Government attaches to supporting the development of Cantonese opera - an art form that has been inscribed onto the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2009," Mrs Lam said. "We are committed to making the Xiqu Centre a leading global facility for the preservation and development of this important art form in Hong Kong. This world-class venue will provide a platform for Xiqu communities to interact, develop and produce the finest examples of Cantonese and other Chinese opera performances, and to attract new audiences."
