Nintendo #39;s new console is an anomaly in the game console ecosystem, but not for Nintendo. The company that -- in just the last decade -- popularized stylus-powered gaming, microphone-powered gaming and motion-based gaming, is once again pushing game control inputs forward. And just like its previous consoles, lessons learned from past hardware build the foundation of its latest effort: the Wii U and its bizarre-looking, but conventionally named, "GamePad." The Wii U console itself, for instance, looks almost exactly like the original Wii. It #39;s longer (10.6 inches vs. 8.5 inches for the Wii), a bit rounder on the edges, and there #39;s an HDMI port out back, but overall it #39;s quite similar to its squatter predecessor. It #39;s enough that you #39;d get the two confused if they were sitting in the same entertainment center. Naturally, the beefed-up internals and Wii backwards compatibility mean you #39;ll likely be replacing the ol #39; virtual tennis machine should you choose to pick one up. Of course, the GamePad is the real star of the show here, bolstered by Nintendo #39;s ambitious "TVii" experiment. Everyone #39;s favorite Italian plumber looks super in HD, no doubt, but how software employs the multifaceted touchscreen tablet / traditional game controller hybrid is what really matters. Investigators stand on the railroad tracks after a train struck an R&R Plumbing van Friday afternoon on Hillcrest Circle in Thomasville. The driver of the van wasn't seriously injured.

THOMASVILLE | A plumber escaped serious injury after a van he was driving collided with a train on Friday afternoon.

Officers with the Thomasville Police Department were dispatched to the accident at Hillcrest Circle near Maplewood Avenue at 2:40 p.m.

Walt Smith, a plumber with R&R Plumbing, was crossing the railroad tracks on Hillcrest Circle when he saw a train. With just the front of his van over the tracks, he tried to put the vehicle into reverse to get out of the way of the train. Instead Smith, who acknowledged he was panicking, accidently put the van into park and a train traveling 23 mph struck the vehicle.

It (stinks), Smith said of the accident. Im glad I didnt get hurt.

Motorists are alerted of the railroad tracks with yield and railroad crossing signs. However, there are no crossing lights or bars on the section of railroad at Hillcrest Circle. Smith, who lives less than a block from where the accident occurred, wants extra precautions, such as lights or bars, to be installed at the railroad crossing.

The van received about $4,000 in damage, and Smith received a laceration to his left forearm. He was not transported to a hospital and was treated on the scene by paramedics with Davidson County Emergency Services.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Thomasville Police Department. Sgt. John Elgin said the train received about $500 in damage, and the two people on board were not injured.

Elgin said the train sounded its horn when it approached Hillcrest Circle. He said there is signage on Hillcrest Circle that makes it pretty evident that motorists know they are crossing railroad tracks.

Elgin said the signage was visibly erect for Smith. He said this was the first crash hes investigated at the railroad crossing on Hillcrest Circle.

Theyre all yelling because the sinks about to overflow, Kinney said excitedly as he retold the story of his Thanksgiving Day. Im thinking, Im really not a plumber, but Ill do my best. So they hand me a plunger! And the first thing Im thinking is we dont really need a plunger next to all our food because theyre still cooking. And before I know it Im in plunging away! And water is going everywhere!

Those are the types of sink overloads that would double or even triple plumber workloads on the day after Thanksgiving and it gave them some interesting discoveries in the sinks.

Ive seen everything from a half pound of chicken to shot glasses, said Michael Mendoza whos been a plumber for nearly 20 years and works with Roto Rooter in Fort Worth.

But Friday is no longer the big day it used to be for plumbers. The internet allows people to learn how to do fix-ups themselves or prevent clogs in the first place. And a new holiday tradition keeps families out of the house and the kitchen.

Black Friday, it probably puts a damper on us, Mendoza said. But itll be better tomorrow.

He and others in the industry say the workload is more evenly spread out as people return to holiday habits in the kitchen over the weekend.
