Katsuhito Nakasone hosting a Traditional Japanese Tea Gathering in 2009

Beginning later this month month, you can learn even more, in a variety of workshops featuring Katsuhito Nakasone, a visiting landscape architect from Toyama, Japan, Durhams sister city. In The Japanese Tradition of Tea, a lecture on Nov. 28 from 6:30-8 p.m., Nakasone will draw from his own experience designing and building his familys teahouse and the surrounding garden. He and Nancy Hamilton, coordinator of Japanese cultural events at Duke Gardens, will draw parallels to the Duke Gardens teahouse and tea garden in the Japanese Pavilion and discuss the transformative nature of the tea experience.

The following morning at 10:45 a.m., Nakasone will host a traditional Japanese Tea Gathering. Guests to this intimate event will experience the rich tradition and warm atmosphere of the tearoom as Nakasone presents tea and shares his unique perspective. He will also bring his favorite blend of tea, as well as sweets from Toyama for all to enjoy a taste of tea from afar.

A sodegaki workshop will follow on Friday, Nov. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Japanese style of garden design has many strategies that help a visitor focus on detail, shift their perspective and begin to feel connected to nature. A beautiful bamboo screen is one such strategy. Called sodegaki, or sleeve screen, the screens are often intricate and patterned with a variety of joining, fitting and tying techniques.

Designing new moss and maple grove garden is the focus of the final workshop, on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will observe a team of designers as they discuss, evaluate and finalize selections of specific trees, moss selection and placement, and tree-pruning strategies for a new garden. The team will comprise Nakasone, Oshita, Asiatic Arboretum curator Paul Jones, Portland Japanese Garden curator Sadafumi Uchiyama and stone mason Brooks Burleson.

The workshop will conclude with a complete layout and finalizing of plans for installation. The workshop location will be indoors and out, adjusting with weather conditions.

Japanese Architect to Talk at Duke Gardens on the Tradition of Japanese Tea

The flooding in New York and New Jersey caused by Superstorm Sandy prompted calls from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other officials to consider building storm surge barriers to protect Lower Manhattan from future catastrophes. But, such a strategy could make things even worse for outlying areas that were hit hard by the hurricane, such as Staten Island, the New Jersey Shore and Long Island's South Shore, a City College of New York landscape architecture professor warns.

"If you mitigate to protect Lower Manhattan, you increase the impact in other areas," says Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, associate professor of landscape architecture in CCNY's Spitzer School of Architecture. "Everyone outside of the surge protection zone would be in jeopardy because the water doesn't get reduced, it just goes somewhere else. It's an environmental justice issue. You can't just save Wall Street."

Professor Seavitt calls, instead, for deploying a storm defense strategy that combines elements of soft infrastructure with the hardening of existing infrastructure such as the subway system, highways and power plants.

'Techniques from nature and ecology'

"The idea of soft infrastructure is to use techniques from nature and ecology to improve resiliency," she explains. "Environments that are more resilient bounce back faster after storms, and greater resiliency reduces the velocity of and damage caused by the water's surge." Additionally, it would be much less expensive than building storm surge barriers, with costs running to hundreds of millions of dollars instead of billions.

She first proposed development of soft infrastructure in "On the Water/Palisade Bay," a report published in 2010 in collaboration with structural engineer Guy Nordenson and architect Adam Yarinsky, and funded by the Fellows of the American Institute of Architects' biannual Latrobe Prize. Mr. Nordenson is Professor Seavitt's husband.

The team's research focused on New York's Upper Bay, which is bounded by Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey. Its proposal consisted of strategies to adapt to and mitigate the effects of rising sea levels caused by climate change, including increased potential storm surges from hurricanes and nor'easters.

"We wanted to show how soft infrastructure could be used to transform the coastal edge in order to create a healthier ecology and reduce the extent of storm damage," she says. "There are things we can do besides building higher and higher seawalls everywhere. For example, if we replace a wall with a gradient edge that slopes into the water or we give the shoreline a more irregular shape there will be more room to accommodate water."

Among the techniques it proposed were restoring and enlarging wetlands, creating reefs and archipelagoes of artificial islands and seeding oyster beds. Spoils from harbor dredging and deepening, which is regularly performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, could be used for these beneficial purposes.

WALHALLA Land clearing is already under way and earth moving should begin Monday at Oconee County's next major industrial park, Oconee officials said Friday.

Some of the preparations on the site off S.C. 11 in the Richland community will involve lowering the levels of some of the property perhaps as much as 20 feet, according to Russell Johnson, project and marketing manager with the Oconee County Economic Development Commission.

Richard Blackwell, county economic development director, said the county is getting ready to meet some industry deadlines.

"Lots of people are talking about Oconee County and how aggressive we are about preparing for the future," Blackwell said.

The master plan for the roughly 400-acre park calls for eight industrial sites, which Blackwell said the county will seek to prepare as certified industrial sites, increasing their marketability.

In October the County Council committed $2.5 million to begin the first phase of the park's development in view of an industrial prospect that had already showed interest in locating to the site.

The Phase I development was moved up months ahead of a rough schedule outlined by county administrator Scott Moulder earlier this year because officials say a yet-unnamed advanced material manufacturer could commit to locating at the site if it can be prepared to fit the manufacturer's own timetable.

According to Moulder, the company "wants to be up and running by the first quarter of 2014."

County officials said the manufacturer was interested in the site's planned 300,000-square-foot pad and the total investment was estimated at about $10 million and would lead to about 100 jobs. The initial plant size would be about 100,000 square feet.

The 54-acre Phase I tract is intended to have industrial sites of 300,000 square feet, 100,000 square feet and 50,000 square feet. The plans also call for installing over a half-mile each of 8-inch waterlines and 10-inch gravity-flow sewer lines, as well as over 2,900 feet of 28-feet-wide asphalt roadway.
