Demolition work has begun on 1970s-built empty shops in Keynsham as part of a 33m regeneration project for the town centre.

The work is going ahead after revised plans were approved by Bath and North East Somerset Council.

The scheme also includes the demolition of the library and town hall buildings.

Council leader Paul Crossley said with the work taking place there is "a sense that the regeneration of Keynsham is now happening for real".

The project, which will see new shops and restaurants and spaces for markets and events, is set to be completed in Autumn 2014.

The council also said about 50 local people would benefit from new jobs, training and education opportunities as part of the scheme.

Neal Stephens, from construction firm Willmott Dixon, said: "By sourcing all of our materials locally and using local contractors wherever possible, we are able to give as much back to the community as we can while recreating a vibrant town centre for Keynsham."

The High Court has extended an order stopping demolition of the quake-damaged Christ Church Cathedral.

Late this afternoon, Christchurch High Court judge Justice Chisholm extended a ruling to stop demolition work at the iconic building until a judicial review has taken place.

The review was sought by the Great Christchurch Building Trust who argue the owners are under a legal obligation to restore the existing Cathedral.

"The decision to deconstruct the Cathedral without any decision to repair or rebuild it meant that its decision was incomplete," a statement from the trust said this afternoon.

Justice Chisholm allowed the review saying there was considerable public interest in the site.

However, he agreed with the owners that they were only legally obliged to either repair the existing Cathedral or build another Cathedral on the same site.

"We are pleased the decision to deconstruct the old cathedral and rebuild a new cathedral was confirmed by the Judge," said Cathedral Trust spokesperson Bishop Victoria.

"As we have said since March the new design will be a mixture of old and new and it will be beautiful."

In the aftermath of the February 22 2011 earthquake, CERA said the Cathedral was unsafe and needed to be demolished to 2 metres high but Chisholm today ruled they were not required to act on that finding.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) There are new details on the construction on Route 28.

A major hang up for the project has been St. Nicholas Church. On Thursday, demolition plans for the church were revealed, but there are also big changes that drivers will see starting on Friday.

The progress on the Route 28 reconstruction project comes to a quick halt as you turn the curve into the stretch that runs past St. Nicholas Church.

This will be the final phase of the project, and PennDOT wont let the contracts here until next summer, leaving plenty of time for PennDOT to consider the possibility of design changes.

As a crew removed asbestos, the city, Diocese, contractor and PennDOT met at the church Thursday morning to discuss the plan to bring the building down the third week of December

Pittsburgh Demolition Manager Paul Loy says it will leave behind a sloped hillside up against the retaining walls that are in the back of the property.

Only a few specific items will be preserved.

The statue in the grotto, the bells, the cornerstone and I believe the cross on the roof are all going out to the St. Nicholas in Millvale, said Loy.

The work will require lane closures and possibly closing the road completely for short periods of time.

But Loy says the contractor is planning to do the work during the overnight hours and will leave rush hours alone.

The Great Christchurch Buildings Trust (GCBT) went to the High Court at Christchurch in October saying the cathedral's owner is breaching a 2003 Act protecting church buildings, and that it has a moral and legal responsibility to save it.

A decision by High Court Justice Lester Chisolm was released on Thursday afternoon.

He ruled a judicial review must consider the decision to partially deconstruct and partially demolish the church. He also said demolition work must be stopped until further notice.

No date has been set for the judicial review.

The church's owner, Church Property Trustees, decided in March to bring the building down to a level of two to three metres to meet safety standards.

Apart from the deconstruction of what remained of the tower, no major steps had been taken to implement the decision.

GCBT, led by former MP Jim Anderton, argued the purpose of the trust was to maintain and repair the cathedral and the decision to demolish it 'defeats that central purpose of the trust'.

The church had argued that two paragraphs in the Act which stated that the trust can 'build on or develop any property whatsoever' gives it the ability to deconstruct the building.

Bishop Victoria Matthews told Radio New Zealand the church would take time to consider the decision.

Court halts demolition of NZ cathedral

Demolition begins on the Gottchalks building at Coddingtown Mall to make way for a new Target store on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012.

Demolition of the former Gottschalks department store building at Coddingtown mall began Thursday morning to make way for a Target expected to open in 2014.

Crews using heavy machinery ripped through the exterior walls of the two-story Santa Rosa building, collapsing the southwest corner and sending the black letters of the Gottschalks sign crashing into a pile of twisted rubble.

It's exciting to see it come down, said Rick Freeman, president of the Codding Construction, which built the structure that was previously home to the Liberty House and Macy's department stores. It's served its purpose.

The project is the latest step in the mall's efforts to reinvigorate the 1960s era shopping center. The mall's owners have spent millions in recent years on upgrades that have attracted new tenants, including a Whole Foods and BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse.

For us as a company this is a monumental milestone for the future redevelopment and revitalization of Coddingtown, said Kirstie Moore, property and development manager of Codding Enterprises, which built the mall and now owns 50 percent of it with partner Simon Property Group.

In addition to the department store, portions of the adjoining mall also will be demolished to allow Target to nestle into the mall by about 80 feet.

The work is being handled by NCM Demolition and Remediation of Dublin. Crews began stripping the interior of the building and prepping it for demolition about two weeks ago.

About 95 percent of the materials in the steel and concrete block building will be recycled as part of the project, Freeman said.

After the building is down and debris hauled off, Codding Construction will begin prepping the site with new utilities and parking lot improvements before turning it over to Target for construction of a 143,000-square-foot single-story big box store.
