Ogden firefighters credited a sprinkler system for keeping a Thursday morning strip mall fire from becoming a major conflagration.
Deputy Fire Chief Eric Bauman said the blaze began shortly after 7 a.m. at 3585 S. Harrison Blvd., an address composing seven businesses. The fire started inside Betos restaurant, which sustained about $20,000 in fire, smoke and fire damage. The nearby Little Caesars Pizza also filled with smoke.
"The sprinkler system [inside Betos] did activate and extinguish the majority of the fire," Bauman said. "Smoke was ventilated from both businesses, and property owners for both businesses were contacted and responded to the scene."
In addition to Ogden fire units, crews from the South Ogden Fire Department and Weber Fire District helped extinguish the flames.
While three people were evacuated from Betos, none was injured, Bauman said.
"This is another example of the benefits of sprinkler systems in businesses," he added. "The early activation of the business sprinkler system played a huge role [in preventing the] spread of the fire."

RENO, NV - Smoke alarms can get you and your family out of a burning building in time, but a sprinkler system can stop the fire at its origin.
That's why fire officials and members of the media gathered on a parking lot near the convention center this morning.
To demonstrate the difference a sprinkler system can make they constructed two identical rooms. That one has no sprinkler system. The other does.
First, a fire is started in a trash can in the non-sprinklered room.
The fire builds quickly. In less than two minutes the smoke alarm has been triggered.
If this were your home, you'd be scrambling to get everyone out safely, then calling the fire department.
But a couple of minutes later, very likely before they could arrive things can get much more serious.
"It can get to flash over phase, which means everything in that room ignites, in 4 to 5 minutes," says Sparks Fire Marshal Bob King.
And in the demonstration that's exactly what happens. The room literally explodes in flame and black smoke.

NORMAL Residents of Illinois State Universitys Watterson Towers were evacuated Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning after a sprinkler system activated.
We believe someone may have hung something from a sprinkler on the 11th floor and when the sprinkler broke, the system did what it was designed to do and it emptied water throughout the 11th floor, said Eric Jome, assistant director with ISU media relations.
There were no injuries, but officials are still assessing the damage, Jome said. Crews have been working on cleaning up the damage related to the incident.
Theres a lot of wetness, Jome said. A lot of things got wet and our first priority is to get everything dry. But of course, water travels down.
With water in the alarm system, a smoke alarm activated at about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday and students were evacuated from the building for a short time, Jome said.
In addition to some damage inside the building, several students also reported water damage.
The university doesnt claim responsibility to personal property for water damage, Jome said. But we are trying to help the students in any way we can.

The Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Manufacturing industry has experienced inconsistent revenue flow over the past five years. The bursting of the US housing bubble in the late 2000s hurt demand. The long-awaited recovery of US construction markets is expected to gain traction in 2013. Further economic improvement will decrease unemployment, increase consumer and business spending, and create robust demand conditions for new office buildings, retail locations, factories, hotels, apartments, and other structures that typically contain automatic fire sprinkler systems, causing stronger revenue growth. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has added a report on the Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Manufacturing industry to its growing industry report collection.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 05, 2012
Export demand helped lift the industry into positive territory in 2010: automatic fire sprinkler systems and parts exports soared 15.1% to $117.5 million, Samadi says. Foreign developing markets where construction activity has continued to escalate strongly have been accounting for an increasing share of Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Manufacturing industry revenue. International construction demand is expected to continue growing strongly over the next five years. As more developing and newly industrialized countries grow and attract foreign investment into major metropolitan areas, construction activity abroad will create demand for automatic fire sprinkler systems. IBISWorld estimates that exports will increase at an annualized rate of 2.8% over the five years 2012 to $145.4 million.
A more stringent regulatory environment will also drive demand for industry products. States are beginning to adopt the 2009 version of the international residential code, which mandates that fire sprinklers be installed in new single-family homes. This should encourage more residential home builders to install sprinkler systems in the homes they are constructing, increasing demand for automatic sprinkler systems.
The long-awaited recovery of US construction markets is expected to gain traction in 2013. Further economic improvement will decrease unemployment, increase consumer and business spending, and create robust demand conditions for new office buildings, retail locations, factories, hotels, apartments, and other structures that typically contain automatic fire sprinkler systems. Over the five years to 2017, industry revenue is forecast to grow. The Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Manufacturing industry has a high level of market share concentration, with a small number of national and regional manufacturers. IBISWorld industry Report Key Topics
This industry manufactures fire-protection systems that use automatic sprinklers. These systems typically consist of a network of pipes connected to a building's water supply. Industry products include devices that detect fire and automatically release water to combat the flames.

The sprinkler system was activated Tuesday in an 11th floor room in Watterson Towers.
The sprinkler activated the fire alarm, which meant evacuating the residence hall.
The system functioned the way it was supposed to function, Maureen Blair, Director of University Housing Services, explained.
When the sprinkler goes off, it assumes its going off to suppress a fire, and so even though that wasnt the case, the fire alarm went [off].
The Normal Fire Department arrived to investigate the area and ascertained that there was no fire or fire damage.
[After it was confirmed that there was no fire], there were staff that came in who are trained to turn off the sprinkler system, Blair explained.
The sprinkler flooded the room and the water spread to the neighboring room, then leaked into several rooms below it on the 10th floor.
[The sprinkler] is assuming its trying to suppress a fire in a student room, so it dumps a lot of water, Blair said.
All that water finds a place to go, so it traveled to the floors below, and it also spread along the floor.
An investigation is currently ongoing as to how the sprinkler head was activated.

A small fire Wednesday morning at the North End Community Center was put out quickly by a sprinkler system before it could cause any damage, according to the Yuma Fire Department.
Spokesman Mike Erfert said shortly before 4 a.m., YFD received an alarm that indicated the sprinkler system at the North End Community Center, 160 E. 1st St., had activated. When firefighters arrived on scene they found water coming from under a workshop door and a slight odor of smoke.
Once inside the building, Erfert said firefighters found that the fire had been burning on a stack of cardboard boxes in the center's workshop. It, however, had already been extinguished by a single sprinkler head directly above the fire and had not spread beyond the box.
It points out the value of sprinkler systems, Erfert said. It makes a huge difference as far as the damage goes.
With the fire already out, Erfert said firefighters shut down the water flow to the sprinkler head, removed the water from the floors and ventilated the remaining smoke from the building. The center was not occupied at the time of the fire.
Erfert said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appears to have started in materials on top of the boxes. There was no indication of the fire being intentionally set. The North End Community Center was able to remain open for its regular schedule of events.
Erfert said fire sprinkler systems can keep fires from spreading and can also extinguish them. Fire spreads quickly, he added, and can double in size every minute. Even small fires can cause significant damage to personal property and endanger those nearby.
He also said contrary to many Hollywood portrayals, only sprinkler heads directly exposed to the heat of the fire activate, not those in the rest of the room, building, or complex.
