GREENVILLE On second thought, Vickie Glasscock is not resigning as the executive director of Phoenix Charter School in Greenville, at least not yet.

A story in Tuesdays Herald-Banner indicated that an emergency meeting of the schools board of directors had been called for Monday night, concerning Glasscocks announcement that she was resigning her position immediately.

Glasscock issued a statement Tuesday evening, indicating that the notice which had been sent by the schools legal representative to the Herald-Banner the night before was issued prematurely.

The article ... was, unfortunately, a premature announcement of my resignation from Phoenix Charter School, Glasscock said. In my 14th year at the school, I would not resign my position lightly. The Board of Directors did not accept my resignation, and we agreed to continue moving forward to achieve our goals and raise expectations for the school year. We will always agree to focus on our students and their success. We have many initiatives planned for this year: a roll out of one to one laptops for all secondary students, new additions to our Career and Technology Classes, STEM Classes, Drum Corps, and more Experiential Learning Opportunities. We also have increased our student enrollment, community partnerships, and experienced Instructional Leaders. It is an exciting year of growth for Phoenix Charter School, and I am honored to be a part of it.

Finally, much was made of the NBC pilot Next Caller, which starred Dane Cook as a radio shock jock but worry no more. The show will not make it to the air according to Deadline.

(Reuters) - Spending on New York City non-residential building projects is expected to reach a record $12.6 billion in 2012, pushing up overall construction spending a surprising 9.0 percent to $30.7 billion, an industry group said on Wednesday.

But overall construction activity is expected to remain relatively flat in 2013 at a projected $30.2 billion level, according to the New York Building Congress, which publishes an annual report on the outlook for spending and jobs in New York City's construction industry.

The group's improved outlook for the current and coming year contrasts with last year's predictions, when it said it projected flat construction spending in 2012 and a sharp fall in 2013.

"The city's construction industry has experienced a swift and rather remarkable resurgence," said the group's president, Richard T. Anderson, in a statement.

Large projects -- including construction at the World Trade Center, the Barclays Center, and renovation of Madison Square Garden -- drove much of the uptick.

Construction spending for office space, sports venues, hotels, institutional developments and other non-residential building is expected to reach an all-time high of $12.6 billion in 2012, up from $10.5 billion a year ago, the group said.

Additional growth came from residential construction, which is forecast to increase slightly to $3.2 billion in 2012 from $2.9 billion in 2011. The group said it thinks the sector will continue rising to $5.3 billion in 2014.

Spending on mass transit, public schools, bridges, roads and other public infrastructure is expected to increase slightly to $14.9 billion in 2012 from $14.6 billion in 2011, according to the group, which forecast spending in the sector to remain flat through 2014.

"We are concerned about the prospect of declining government investment beyond the forecast period," Anderson said.

The city has projected that it will cut in half its construction and design commitments between now and fiscal year 2015. Questions also surround the next capital plan for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the city's second largest government spender, whose next capital plan begins in 2015, Anderson said.

New York construction spending rises to $30.7 billion in 2012: report

GAINESVILLE - Carroll Daniel Construction Company announced Tuesday that a recently completed construction project at the Mansfield Oil corporate office in Gainesville has been awarded LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

It is the first building in Hall County to receive LEED-certification at any level. The LEED rating system, developed by the USGBC is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability.

Carroll Daniel began construction in August 2011 on a 10,000-square-foot office renovation. The project consisted of turning existing warehouse space into a two-level office building that will house approximately 40 staff members on the first floor and potential meeting space on the second floor.

LEED Silver certification is awarded on a point scale judged by the USGBC. Projects receive points based on implementation of sustainable building practices in each of six major categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. Sustainable components of the Mansfield project included enhanced heating and air systems to improve indoor air quality and efficient electrical and plumbing fixtures throughout. Additionally, the project utilized local building materials produced within close proximity to Hall County.

The facility reduces energy consumption by employing a 100kw array of solar panels installed on the roof of Mansfield's Gainesville headquarters. There are three-hundred-twenty-four 305-watt multicystalline Siliken solar modules on the 18,000-square-foot roof. The project was also awarded points for being administered by a LEED-accredited professional on the project team at Carroll Daniel who had been trained and accredited by the USGBC on the LEED process.

The Mansfield Oil Build Out Project has been named a first-place award recipient in two divisions of the Associated General Contractors 2012 Build Georgia Awards Program. The project was awarded first place honors in the Best Sustainable Building Practices category for design/build renovation projects.

Mansfield Oil project receives first LEED Certification in Hall Co.

Chris Williams | 10/16/2012 The Williston building department set a record last year, approving 9-hundred and 29 permits that totaled over 350 million dollars in construction costs.

Not even one year later, that record is on track to be surpassed.

So far this year, there have been 8-hundred and 56 permits approved, and as the building department enters one if it`s busiest times of the year, they expect last years record to be broken.

Piles of building plans are everywhere around the building department`s office.

"We`ve got huge huge projects going on. Steel structures, wood frame. Four, three bedroom apartments four stories high three stories high, and single family residence," said Building Inspector Al Christensen.

There are three building inspectors in the city. Two of them work on commercial buildings, and another on residential housing.

"All day long we`re moving. I might go to the same site everyday for a month straight. Between the three of us we`re trying to do plan review, and we`re grabbing our stuff and heading out," added Christensen.

With winter about 2 months away, construction crews are flooding the building department with permits. They want to get concrete poured before the ground freezes.

They are short staffed, and the permits are coming in at record breaking pace, but the building department is still managing to approve permits rather quickly.

"We`re under six weeks, and that`s pretty good for commercial projects and we`re less than two weeks for houses. That`s unheard of," Christensen added.

Barry Darnell, St. Vincents system director of major construction, said the building should open in early October 2013 on the same day as the St. Vincents Medical Center Clay County.

Plans shows the office building will be a 60,090-square-foot, three-story structure on 4.72 acres on the hospital campus at Blanding Boulevard and Branan Field Road.

Johnson Development is the developer and Prosser Hallock is shown on plans as the engineer.

Darnell said St. Vincents is leasing the ground to Johnson Development, based in Birmingham, Ala., for development. He said the company specializes in medical office buildings.

Darnell said Johnson Development will negotiate the tenants and leases. St. Vincents said the hospital will use 20,000 square feet of space there for some of its departments and physicians.

Darnell said the parcel could support another medical office building, but there was no timetable for construction.

Darnell said the shell of the medical office building will cost about $10 million and the build-out is about $5 million.

He also estimates it will create about 125 construction jobs and 250-300 medical and related jobs within the building once completed.

Deceuninck North America's Clubhouse PVC Decking Revitalizes the Porches on an Historic Tavern in Bedford, Pa.

Torontos Board of Health will decide next week whether to explore a further clamping down on smoking in public places, including patios and sports fields.

On Monday the board will consider whether the citys medical officer of health should consult with key stakeholders on extending smoking restrictions. If the board gives its assent, a decision on further limits would not come before next year.

In 2009, the City surpassed the level of protection offered by the [Smoke-Free Ontario Act] by banning smoking near City playgrounds, wading pools, splash pads and in farms and zoos operated by Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division, the board of health notes in an agenda for next weeks meeting. Now, there is strong public interest and support for Toronto to join other Ontario municipalities in expanding [second-hand-smoke] protection to other outdoor spaces, including public building entranceways, bar and restaurant patios and hospital grounds.

A report cited by the board notes that adult smoking rates have dropped since 2001, but that about one in five young adults are still smoking.

Experts agree that tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide, including in Canada and that tobacco use and [second-hand-smoke] exposure remain important public health concerns, the report states.

In 2011 the board of health sought advice on ways to control tobacco use through expansions to existing smoke-free by-laws.
