Company man a sense of humour is a must when living on a deserted island. David Glasheen went on the dating site RSVP, but there are all these crazies out there and nothing came of it.
He was a refugee of the 1987 sharemarket crash - a millionaire businessman turned castaway. But now a court ruling could see David Glasheen evicted from his beloved island home. Susan Chenery reports.
After some alarmingly hectic bailing of water by the bearded man, the tin boat lifts its prow and slowly noses its way out of the bay of the tiny town of Portland Roads in far north Queensland. Away from the mangrove swamp and the flash of a scaly tail, around the point of great boulders pounded into sculptures by the sea and out onto open water, the bow smashing down on the waves, the wake a wide streak of white.
To come this far, I have travelled north from NSW and kept going. And then kept going some more. And now, after a journey of 30 bouncing minutes across turquoise waters, the bearded man and I have reached our destination and his home, Restoration Island. The green, 40-hectare hump idles pacifically within its coral reef, barely a suggestion of a dot on the map just off the tip of Cape York, Australia's northernmost peninsula.
Mans best friend David Glasheen with Quasi. I am not alone, he says. I have a dog. Photo: Brian Cassey
Together, we pull the leaking boat onto the white, white sand - the same "sandy point" on which the unfortunate Captain William Bligh stepped on May 29, 1789, after his crew mutinied and Christian Fletcher set him adrift in the Bounty longboat for 30-odd days with 18 loyal men.

"This being the Day of the Restoration of King Charles II, and the name being not inapplicable to my present situation (for it has restored us to fresh life and strength), I named it Restoration Island," he wrote in his diary.
The island was unchanged and still uninhabited when David Glasheen washed up on a high tide at the tail end of the wet season in April 1997. In spite of increasingly strenuous efforts to move him along in recent years, he has remained here ever since. He has blended into its contours, as much a part of the island as it is of him, another of the many species of native fauna. It is an elemental existence, one shaped by the seasons, the tides, the winds, the rhythms of the natural world; it is a call to the wild. He never wears shoes or, indeed, clothes, except when visitors are present. For rare formal occasions, he has exactly one shirt.
Plenty of bottle Glasheen makes his own beer, which he trades for fish. Photo: Brian Cassey

In its efforts to provide building owners and facility managers with sustainable, durable roofing solutions, Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance is proud to announce its new AlphaGuard series of fluid applied roofing systems.
Beachwood, OH (PRWEB) October 13, 2012
AlphaGuard MT is both very versatile and technologically advanced, said Ed Buczek, the companys AlphaGuard product manager. The MT refers to its moisture-triggered curing mechanism, which is far more dependable than the moisture-cured mechanism of commodity coating systems. This benefits building owners, facility managers and occupants because it allows the roof to be installed and operational much more quickly, saving them time on the project as well as money. AlphaGuard MT is also very low odor, a bonus for those occupying the building while the roof is being installed. The system is easy to maintain and if the need arises is also easy to repair. Full warranties will help keep the AlphaGuard MT system sustainable for the long haul.
The AlphaGuard MT system is an excellent choice for restoring almost any kind of aging but still functional roof. This includes modified bitumen, built-up and single ply, as well as roofs with exposed or buried roof membranes that were applied to concrete, continued Buczek. For use over metal, gypsum, cementitious wood fiber and concrete decking which requires standard insulation board, the AlphaGuard MT Plus system is available. This solution incorporates a tough, completely waterproof polyester base sheet set in odorless polyurethane adhesive beneath a full AlphaGuard MT system. This belt and suspenders approach combines proven solid, redundant design with state-of-the-art moisture-triggered polyurethane technology.
The AlphaGuard MT system is a single component, fully reinforced, aliphatic polyurethane, moisture-triggered roofing system composed of a base coat reinforced with a glass mat for durability and a top coat; both coats are applied with rollers, minimizing the amount of equipment that will be on a buildings roof. The white, highly reflective top coat can help lower a buildings energy usage and can be tinted to aesthetically match the buildings other roof levels. The system carries FM Approvals RoofNav ratings, is UL fire-rated, complies with the Florida Building Code and meets ASTM 7311. Additional benefits of the AlphaGuard MT system include excellent resistance to chemicals, traffic, hail and mold/mildew/fungus as well as superior cold weather flexibility, tensile strength and elongation properties that help make it extremely tough.

Luxury products are making a comeback according to 2012 remodeling trends.
By Scott Murfey
Last month, we discussed the many ways in which San Diego homeowners can combine custom goods and services for a successful kitchen remodel. Now, the latest remodeling trends suggest that 2012 may be a big year for luxury remodeling projects across the board. From new kitchens to full-scale renovations, homeowners polled in the Fall 2012 Remodeling Sentiment Report from RemodelOrMove.com indicated an interest in more expensive products and projects of significantly greater scope than in years past. As the housing market continues to improve, buoyed by stronger stock market numbers and historically low interest rates, homeowners appear ready to tackle long-deferred home improvements. And while high-quality products are always a smart investment, it is important to remember that an experienced contractor is every homeowners best insurance for a successful remodeling experience.
Recent coverage of the Fall 2012 Remodeling Sentiment Report indicates a number of highlights from the survey, with homeowners apparent preference for more luxurious home products leading the way among this years noteworthy trends. Evidence of this consumer shift appears in a variety of sectors, including the number of homeowners who claim to be using expensive products (at its highest rate since 2008), projected costs for remodeling ventures (coming in at an average estimate of $100,000), the scale of these ventures (encompassing an average of at least three rooms) and the number of respondents planning to hire a contractor (coming to 73%, the highest rate since 2006).
Other factors indicating the consumer shift toward luxury remodeling projects include a focus on kitchen remodeling considered by most to be an inessential project as compared to necessary bathroom remodels or additions and also a simple increase in the number of wealthy homeowners planning home improvements in the coming months. Considered together, these factors suggest that, for some homeowners, a high-end remodel may serve as an alternative to purchasing a new home. For those who love their current home or neighborhood, but still want to add a personal touch or additional space to the property, remodeling is an ideal choice. All it takes is some smart planning and the help of an experienced contractor to offer advice and assistance transforming a homeowners vision into reality.
At Murfey Construction, we pride ourselves on providing top quality construction and contracting services to help our San Diego clients create the homes of their dreams. From basic consulting to design/plan work to full-scale execution and construction, our experienced team is your one-stop source for remodeling projects of every size and scope. Dont miss these top stories:
Kitchen remodeling is making a comeback, taking over as the No. 1 remodeling project for the first time in four years, according to a recent survey. And that signals a return to more luxury remodeling projects.
Not only do kitchens cost more than any other type of room to build or remodel, they also typically take the most time to complete and can totally disrupt a familys sense of comfort and routines, said Dan Fritschen, founder of RemodelOrMove.com, in a news release. The websites survey about remodeling attitudes reflect the opinions of 5,000 homeowners.
More proof homeowners are thinking luxury: An increasing number of respondents described the materials they intend to use in their remodel as expensive, according to the report. The average remodeling job cost was estimated to be $100,000.
Read more Real Estate news in this weeks pages, including how to help move your refinance application through the process and how banks are increasing perks to get wealthy customers to take out large mortgages.
If you do plan on following through with a kitchen remodel, Fritschen recommends that you do some homework first and make sure youre really up for the expense.
Im not trying to discourage you from remodeling your kitchen, because the results can be more than worth the inconvenience, Fritschen said. And the inconvenience can definitely be minimized through good planning. Im just suggesting that you carefully consider the project before pulling the triggerthen consider it again for good measure.

Sanibel Community Church's application to modify its original conditional use permit to include two additional air conditioning units was approved at Tuesday's Sanibel Planning Commission meeting.
That said, the matter was discussed for nearly three hours by commissioners, several upset resident neighbors and Ray Pavelka, representing the church.
To address complaints about excessive noise made by the air conditioning compressors that face neighboring residences, Pavelka provided data from three sound pressure level tests done at the site. Starting with a base "ambient" background noise level of 42 decibels, a church consultant recorded a level of 48 to 49 db with all seven A/C units running. Code Enforcement readings ranged from 56 to 59 db, about the same results as an outside source.
JIM LINETTE The entrance to Bailey's Center located on Periwinkle Way adjacent to George & Wendy's has been closed since it no longer meets city code. The center is moving the entry drive east on Periwinkle and modifying much of its parking lot.
City code states sound levels should not exceed a level of 60 db between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and 66 db from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
"Both readings are below 60 db, the lowest level allowed," said Pavelka. "We have to be responsive to the residents' concerns, but there are limitations. In the interest of being good neighbors, we will continue to look at options to reduce noise."
Pavelka said a number of measures already have been taken on the issue, such as additional vegetation buffer for the affected residences, installing larger trees, reducing sidewalk and hard surfaces and using smaller residential size dual compressor units made by Trane. Constructing sound abating fences or walls might not be a solution because of restrictions.
Though the church's request to add two A/C units, for a total of seven, still meets the city standard for noise level, neighbors in the adjoining area known as Island Woods are not satisfied.
"The natural vegetation barrier is now gone because of land clearing for the construction," said resident Kurt Harjung. "It protected us from the noise made by Jerry's Supermarket's cooling towers. We, the residents, added a vegetation barrier at our expense. This (church) is the most ambitious project on Sanibel in 20 years and it's right next to a residential area. It's now a big open area."
Neighbor Mark Mathusa spoke the harshest words for the project.

Years of inactivity at a Central West End corner that neighbors called a mosquito pit will soon come to an end with construction of an apartment building that will house a coveted tenant: a Whole Foods grocery.
Bruce Mills, whose Mills Properties is the project's developer, said he expects work to begin by early 2013. He said that erecting the seven-story building at 100 North Euclid Avenue will take 22 months.
Mills, the company's chief executive, said this week he has from Whole Foods Market a letter of intent to occupy the entire first floor, encompassing 30,000 square feet.
"We've been working on this for quite a while," he said. "I will get excited the day the shovels start moving dirt."
Kate Klotz, a Whole Foods spokeswoman, said Thursday the company does not discuss new locations until leases are signed.
The Whole Foods in the Central West End would be the grocery chain's third in the St. Louis area. The others are in Town and Country and Brentwood. Mills said the city store will be much like the one in Brentwood.
Whole Foods is a high-end grocery that features organic and natural foods, plus a wide range of prepared dishes.
From its health-food roots in the late 1970s in Austin, Texas, the chain has grown by expansion and acquisition to more than 300 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The company, still based in Austin, says sales last year topped $10 billion.
Much like Trader Joe's, a decision by Whole Foods to open a grocery can signal that the chosen neighborhood has crossed a threshold of affluence and desirability.
"I've had calls from people thanking me for increasing their property values," said Mills, chuckling.

Renovation Open House will be playing at the Hollywood Theater in La Crosse on Saturday, and ticket buyers will get to play interior decorator voting on finishing touches to restore the old theater.
The $10 admission for the 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. fundraiser will entitle buyers to tour the building and 10 tickets to cast votes for faucets, wallpaper, paint, tile and lighting fixtures, said Phil Addis, who bought the dilapidated theater, sight unseen, at a sheriffs auction Feb. 28. Proceeds will go toward the restoration.
The open house, with tours every half hour, is part of the 17th annual Historic Downtown La Crosse Day, which starts with a 5K run/walk at 8 a.m. at Viterbo University and continues with family activities through the day.
One of the more popular events, the 21st Annual Chili Cook-off in the State Bank parking lot, has been canceled because of predicted rain.
At the Hollywood, open house patrons will be able to see Addis progress since he gained access to the building for the first time in April and discovered it had no heat, air conditioning, seats or running water but plenty of crumbling plaster and mildew.
The inside has been cleaned, the moldy carpeting removed and the decrepit furniture tossed, and repairs are in process, he said.
On display besides the decorating options will be the final architectural plans and seats that will be installed before the theater reopens, which Addis has targeted for February.
Addis, who declined to estimate the ultimate cost of the project, said he has received some small donations and has received extensive in-kind donations from the roofing and electrical contractors.
He envisions the theater as a venue for second-run movies, as well as old and classic movies and a concert hall. People also will be able to rent it for meetings, and a couple inquired about being married there. Unfortunately, the renovation wont be completed in time for their nuptials.
Historic Downtown La Crosse Day will feature an array of other activities highlighting the citys heritage, including tours of Mary of the Angels Chapel at Viterbo, open house tours at the Grand Hotel Ballroom, free trolley rides and horse-drawn carriage rides around downtown and music of bygone and current days.

China first LED lighting subsidy to reach CNY2 billion
Siu Han, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES[Thursday 11 October 2012]
The list of firms that have been chosen in China's first round of LED lighting subsidies has been announced. Market observers believe the 39 firms will obtain a total subsidy for 83.7 million units of LED lighting. The total bid will likely reach CNY2 billion (US$318 million).
China-based Kingsun Optoelectronic and Lampearl obtained approximately of 10% of the bid.
For this round of bids, 113 firms participated and 39 firms were selected. This also coincides with China's policy of banning the use of incandescent lighting in October. Among the subsidized 87.3 million units of LED lighting, 78.5 million units are for indoor lighting, the focus of the bid.
Philips is the only international firm that qualified, however, the firm only obtained 100,000 units of indoor and 30,000 of outdoor lighting. Kingsun and Lampearl obtained a total bid of 400,000 units of indoor and 70,000 of outdoor lighting.
Market observers noted that Taiwan-based upstream LED chipmakers are to benefit from the subsidy as the firms are one of the main providers for indoor lighting.
LED chipmakers such as Epistar, Formosa Epitaxy, and Genesis Photonics have been emphasizing high-brightness products while Lextar focuses on vertical integration, and these firms are likely to be included in the supply chain. LED packaging houses such as Unity Opto and Everlight have been forming strategic alliances with China-based firms. However, China has a large number of LED packaging houses, hence it will be more difficult for these firms to be included in the supply chain.
