In response to coronavirus concerns, Pinterest has paid $89.5 million to cancel a new lease on 490,000 square feet of office space that was set aside for construction near its current San Francisco headquarters. In a statement, Todd Morgenfeld, CFO and head of business operations of Pinterest, said, As we analyze how our workplace will change in a post-COVID world, we are specifically rethinking where future employees could be based.
On September 10, the U.S. Green Building Council hosted its Green Business Summit, where more than 1,000 green building and business professionals gathered to discuss the future of corporate sustainability, highlighting COVID-19 and climate change as two standout challenges. As part of the forums conclusion, it released the Healthy Economy Forum Report, outlining some of its key takeawaysnotably, that investing in schools is a first step to reopening the economy; as much as $12 trillion could be added to the global GDP by 2040 if businesses can emphasize better health; future buildings should have a pandemic mode that can be switched on and off; and designers should prioritize high indoor air quality.
Last week, People reported that Kim Kardashian West has trademarked KKW Home, a move that may be the first step toward an expansion of the reality TV stars empire into the home space. With existing lines in beauty and fashion, Kardashian Wests trademark would cover everything from gifts and bath products to furnishing and decor, reports Refinery29.
Former congressman and New York mayoral candidate Anthony D. Weiner (whose political career ended in federal prison following multiple sexting scandals) is now the acting chief executive of IceStone, a Brooklyn-based countertop company. The New York Times reports that despite Weiners colorful history, the former politician had been advising one of the companys executives before he was asked to join the team as CEO in May.
U.K.-based luxury home goods label Buster + Punch announced a 7 million (thats just over $9 million) series B round on September 3. Led by British investor Mobeus Equity Partners, the new injection of capital brings the companys total to nearly 10 million (or $12.8 million). Buster + Punch specializes in lighting and furniture design, offering hardware, design servicesand motorcycles, as well.
LAUNCHES, COLLABORATIONS & PARTNERSHIPS
New Jerseybased kids educational nonprofit Those Amazing Professions has announced the launch of Those Amazing Architects, a new website designed to inform young people about careers in architecture, showcasing examples of how architects work and the difference they make in peoples lives. The platform targets middle and high school students, educators, counselors, universities and design professionals in the U.S. to help build the next generation of architects. It was developed with the support of industry associations like Gensler, HOK, the National Academy of Construction, STV Incorporated and the Thorton Tomasetti Foundation.
Together with Architectural Digest, the Black Interior Designers Network has announced The Iconic Home, a virtual showhouse launching this November that will highlight the talents of Black designers while emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusivity within the industry.
Last week, Los Angelesbased soft goods company Parachute announced its Home for Dreams Initiative, a new mentorship and grant program that aims to support Black-owned, product-centered businesses with capital, advisory meetings and brand amplification. The program will focus on one business every six months, providing $25,000 in financial support and business advice from Parachute founder Ariel Kaye. Martinsville, Virginiabased manufacturer Hooker Furniture has announced Breegan Jane as its first digital brand ambassador. The company hopes to engage with consumers and the interior design community by strengthening its social media presence, reports Furniture Today. We knew immediately upon being introduced to Breegan that she would be the perfect fit as our first digital brand ambassador, said Johne Albanese, Hooker Furnitures vice president of corporate marketing.
Beginning September 29, groups of two Los Angeles County residents will have the chance to book one of five nights to stay in a wing of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Airs mansion, courtesy of Airbnb, reports Adweek. The promotion will commemorate the shows 30th anniversary, allowing guests to play foosball or max and relax by the pool in this iconic home.
Sunbrella has released its first comprehensive collection of performance textiles that use up to 93 percent recycled materials, as well as a few designs in a first-time line with textile designer Jack Lenor Larsen.
CALENDAR UPDATES
CEDIA Expo Virtual begins today and runs through September 17, showcasing the latest in home technology innovations.
Following the success of its Virtual MRKT this summer, Field + Supply will host its fall fair as an interactive digital experience. Beginning on Thursday, October 8, the four-day event will celebrate fine craftsmanship, turning to its year-round e-commerce marketplace as a tool to allow attendees to discover and shop the markers collections.
Forty One Madison has announced that this years New York Tabletop Market will take place virtually from October 13 to 20, as well as in person. Showrooms will be open by appointment; all visitors will be required to check in and comply with the buildings COVID-19 safety protocols. Digital programming will include a full schedule of interactive workshops and webinars, lookbook, digital reading room and influencer-curated Instagram product.
The Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville announced last week that it would cancel its 2021 event due to ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19. The show, the largest of its kind in the U.S., usually attracts more than 15,000 attendees, whose tickets support the charities Cheekwood Estate & Gardens and Economic Club of Nashville. The organizers are encouraging supporters to make a comparable donation in lieu of ticket purchasing this year to continue support of those organizations, and they plan to resume the show in 2022.

The Weird Homes Tour has returned, this time entirely virtual. On September 26, the Weird Homes team will travel to Portland, Oregon, leading viewers through the (weird) homes and fielding questions from the virtual audience along the way. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to Central City Concern and its mission to provide more affordable housing in Portland. Last week, The New York Times spoke with several architects and landscape architects to see where their imaginations have taken them in the quest to solve the pressures being placed on public spaces as the pandemic continues. In New York, Claire Weisz of urban design and architecture firm WXY proposes raising awnings to allow small businesses to operate while maintaining social distancing; in Oakland, California, Deanna Van Buren, executive director of community development nonprofit Designing Justice + Designing Spaces, is brainstorming a de-escalation center where conflicts can be anticipated and better resolved.
After speaking to interior designers and architects from around the country, The Wall Street Journal has made its bid for the top design trends to come in the next decadeand some are less obvious than others. Say farewell to open floor plans and hello to nature-inspired spaces that support wellness; furniture pieces will grow more compact; and rigid rectilinear design will further recede, writes WSJ contributor Allison Duncan.

Lighting designer and manufacturer Flos has been honored with two awards from the 26th edition of the highly regarded Italian design award the Compasso dOro ADI. The Product Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Floss Arco lamp, which was originally designed in 1962; the companys modular lighting elements, Arrangements, won the Influential Award.

As the recipient of the American Society of Interior Designers 2020 Irene Winifred Eno Grant, the Sustainable Furnishings Education Fund has allocated the $5,000 award toward an interior design survey titled Whats it made of? Through the survey, the Sustainable Furnishings Council seeks to identify what interior designers understand about the hazardous chemicals currently used in todays manufacturing of home furnishings. Surface material company Formica has opened its call for submissions for the 2020 FORM Student Innovation Competition, which invites architecture and interior design students to design a piece of furniture using Formica products and addressing the theme Design for the Next Generation. IN MEMORIAM
On September 14, Ann Getty, longtime benefactor of the arts and head of her eponymous design firm, passed away from a heart attack at age 79. Author of Ann Getty: Interior Style, she coupled her philanthropic work with a prolific design career, and supported innumerable charitable events by opening her home to the public. Gettys taste for traditional interiors will live on as a hallmark of her legacy.
Longtime design editor George Jason Kontos passed away this weekend. After graduating from Strathearn School with an interior design degree, he started his career in publishing at House Beautiful and went on to work at 12 magazines throughout his lifetime, including 25 years at Hearst titles (with posts at Country Living, Colonial Homes and Classic Home, which he founded). Kontos ended his career as much-lauded editor in chief of New York Home and then New York Spaces, a position he held until the magazines closure in 2018. Jason was an incredible boss, an incredible mentor, and most of all, an incredible friend, wrote his longtime colleague and friend Nicole Haddad in a post on Facebook that announced his passing. I will forever be grateful for the joy, laughter and love hes brought into my life. Words will never convey what a beautiful force of nature Jason was. Or how hollow the world will be without his big booming laugh and his fiery temperament when angered. He used to rail at us when we overruled his design decisions, but he continued to surround himself with strong, stubborn womena testament to who he was. He lived life to the fullest always, traveled the world, and spent his days doing what he loved.
Legendary British designer and retail mogul Terence Conran passed away this weekend at age 88. Conran made a name for himself in the industry designing affordable yet stylish home furnishings in postwar Britain before pivoting to the restaurant industry. His influence will continue to resonate within the industry, BOH retail columnist Warren Shoulberg writes in his tribute: Sir Terence Conran leaves his wife, Victoria, five children, 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a legacy that will be felt in the home furnishings business and households around the world for generations to come.

A new jewel was recently installed in the nearly completed Island County Administration Building on Camano Island.
Camano Island artist Jack Archibald helped place his 5-by-22-foot stained glass art panel Convergence on the north side of the new building at 121 N. East Camano Drive.
The colorful stained glassed art uses convergent lines and circles, which complements the buildings modern design inside and out: vertical red cedar plank siding outside and exposed wood beams inside. Outside, the glass changes mood as the sunlight shifts above. Inside, colors pop when the sun shines through.
I like the building; its sort of modern the glass is modern I like that convergence, Archibald said.
In the planning stages, Archibald had known there was no budget for a glass mural in the public buildings budget, so he proposed to build it for free. Artist Trust awarded him with a $1,500 Gap Grant, which covered most of the materials, so Archibalds donation was his many hours of labor.
Archibald and SHKS Architects worked to incorporate his design into the plans. The architects designed the window space to make installation easy. Archibald waited until the space was built then he measured it onsite and built the glass precisely. Then Archibald and Larry Bach fitted the large horizontal stained glass panel into the building.
Two old geezers up on the high lift its kind of fun, Archibald said.
He said his goal wastoadd art to a public space to inspire a vision of possibilities in ourselves and our children.
I think the entire county will be thrilled with it and grateful for Jacks contribution, said Island County Facilities Director Larry Van Horn. It looks stunning from both the inside and the outside, we couldnt be happier.
The art installation comes as construction is wrapping up on the $5.6 million project. Plus, the project is on time and on budget, Van Horn said. Phase 1 started last fall and is nearing completion a couple weeks early after COVID-19 measures initially set it back. Furniture will be installed the week of Oct. 12. Moving day has been scheduled for Oct. 23. Offices will move in over the weekend, so there's no interruption in county services.
There are hundreds of details to be finished between now and the 23rd of October, but were pretty firm that well be ready, Van Horn said.
In Phase 2, the crew will demolish the old annex building and build a secure sheriff parking area. The target date is Nov. 19 for the Sheriff's Office to move into its new building. Then all the departments will move into the same modern, artistic building.

Bill Ayers of Ayers Contracting built the home. Ayers, Trombetta says, worked through even the trickiest issues (installing the weathered beams with a skytrack!) easily. Beyond that, Trombetta says Ayers shares his penchant for perfection. He is absolutely as attentive to the details as I am. As Trombetta was only able to be onsite five times during the entire building process, he was especially grateful for Ayers clear and consistent communication through texts, photos and phone calls. But best of all, Ayers finished the project on budget.
Ayers, in turn, thanks his team of ace subcontractors, including D & W Mechanical, McMartin Tile & Marble, Kasson Contracting II, TC Coatings Unlimited and Fortified Coatings, for help that made the building process seamless.

Michael Jordan joining fantasy sports giant DraftKings, a Steve Wynn defamation lawsuit, and the Venetian launching the first post-COVID live tournament series dominate this weeks industry headlines

Well kick off with the poker news, and that is dominated by Sheldon Adelsons Venetian Resort Las Vegas decision to run a 32-tournament series this month.
The $400k Deepstack Poker Showdown Series is the first chance for fans of live poker to attempt a return to normality in a COVID-19-dominated world.
The cardroom has been running one-day tournaments since re-opening, but this will be a clear step up, although Venetian tournament director Tommy LaRosa was quick to point out the safety aspects.
He told CardPlayer magazine: By beginning with single-table tournaments and then moving to multi-table tournaments, the process has allowed us to refine our protocols. That included installing plexiglass dividers at each table, allowing for eight-handed play as well as sanitizing tables, chairs, chips, dividers, and LaRosa emphasised that, All patrons must wear masks regardless of the plexiglass dividers being installed.
The Showdown Series runs until September 27th with the flagship finale being a $100k GTD, $400 buy-in NLHE Showdown from September 23rd to 27th.
Disgraced Wynn Resorts CEO Steve Wynn this week saw his defamation lawsuit face a setback, the Nevada Supreme Court siding with a former employee.
As we reported last year, Wynn has been facing trouble from multiple directions following serious sexual impropriety allegations.
Many of them stemmed from a 2018 Wall Street Journal article in which Jorgen Nielsen claimed Wynn had been sexually harassing employees for decades.
Wynns defamation lawsuit describes Nielsen as a disgruntled former employee who harbors a personal animus, dislike, and anger toward Mr. Wynn, according to the LVRJ.
The Nevada Supreme Court, however, sided with Nielsen this week, stating: Nielsen showed that his communication was made in direct connection with an issue of public interest in a public forum, and was truthful or made without knowledge of its falsehood.
Chicago Bulls and all-round NBA legend Michael Jordan has joined fantasy sports betting giants DraftKings as a special advisor, immediately boosting the companys share price.
Jordan will receive an undisclosed equity stake in exchange for providing guidance and strategic adviceon key business initiatives," according to press reports.
The retired star, who won six MVP awards and six championships during his playing career, is now the principal owner of North Carolina-based NBA team, the Charlotte Hornets.
The sportsbetting firm 5Dimes, widely known because of the 2018 murder of its founder William Sean Creighton known as 5DimesTony has apparently suspended relations with its US-based customers.
The Costa Rica-based sportsbook notified its customers that as of September 21st it would no longer be accepting bets from American sports bettors for an unnamed period of time, according to CardPlayer magazine.
However, questions have been raised about the unexpected suspension, with several customers claiming they have simply been switched to what may well just be a skin.
Multiple 5Dimes customers have since had their open futures bets and accounts transferred to a more obscure offshore site called Betanysports, according to legalsportsreport.com.
They report that, Suspiciously, the site layout, prices and bet options all look identical to 5Dimes and state that betanysports is also based in Costa Rica and a sister site to 5Dimes.
Founder and owner, William Sean 5DimesTony Creighton, was abducted and murdered back in 2018, his body found a year later a dozen people arrested including two transport police officers.

TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Tzadik Properties, LLC an industry-leading, multi-family property management company based in Miami-Dade County, Florida and in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was recently the subject of a Tampa Bay Times article published in regards to its properties in and around the Tampa Bay area.
Of the referenced properties, only Timberfalls is owned by Tzadik; the remainder are third-party managed.As such, Tzadik is subject to constraints contained within the owners' capital expenditures budgets in undertaking repairs and maintenance but has made improvements to the full extent possible at both Timberfalls and the third-party managed properties.
Since acquiring Timberfalls, Tzadik Properties, LLC has spent $1,511,492 in capital expenditures, which go above normal repairs and maintenance; and of that, $65,094 has been spent during the COVID-19 pandemic. The damages noted in the article are in the process of being repaired. In fact, contracts have been signed for $626,000 worth of repairs and should be commencing shortly, based on third-party contractors.
"Tzadik Properties, LLC continues to seek out and work with a range of agencies and organizations for even quicker repairs and to be able to offer even more rent concessions to its tenants during these challenging times," said Adam Hendry, founder and CEO of Tzadik Properties. "As a company, we strive to do the right thing for our residents, for our staff and for the communities in which we serve."
Related to work orders and maintenance requests, from March 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020, Tzadik had 836 work orders submitted and completed at its Florida properties. During the previous 5-month span of October 1, 2019 to February 28, 2020, Tzadik only had 228 work orders submitted and completed. This presents an increase of 366% in work orders that were completed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since taking over the properties in Hillsborough County six years ago, $4,657,039.56 has been spent on capital repairs, including major improvements and replacements such as siding, roofs, tubs, flooring, HVAC, etc. In addition, for the Tampa properties, $788,884 was spent from January 2020 to August 2020 on normal repairs and maintenance (painting, patching of walls, small repairs, repairing a faucet or toilet, repairing AC filters, etc.).
Further, another $368,753 was spent on contracts such as maintaining sprinkler systems, landscaping, lift station repairs, pool maintenance, security, etc. Of that amount, $36,234 was spent on pest control.
The article also questions Tzadik's delinquency and eviction process in relation to Governor DeSantis' Executive Order suspending residential evictions due to COVID-19. Per the company's policy on notices, Tzadik continued to offer residents ample opportunities to work out payment arrangements. From March 1, 2020, to present, Tzadik has provided concessions to prevent eviction for 33 of its Timberfalls residents, totaling $16,335. During this timeframe, Tzadik extended concessions to prevent evictions to 360 residents at its properties throughout the state of Florida, for a total dollar amount of $829,323. Throughout Hillsborough County, at its 11 properties, Tzadik provided $172,000 in total concessions, which saved 93 residents from eviction. In addition, Tzadik provided 1,448 of its Florida tenants with $80 rental credits for prepaying their rent during the months of May, June and July, in the total amount of $118,840.
Tzadik Properties, LLC granted $671,000 of concessions and credits to renters for the TZA portfolio, which consists of Tampa-owned properties as well as Winter Haven and Jacksonville, totaling 14 properties. Company-wide, from March through August, Tzadik offered concessions to 5,465 tenants to go towards moving in, resident referrals, renewals and miscellaneous resident concessions in the amount of $854,351.26.
The total amount of concessions / credits that Tzadik granted to renters at Timberfalls who were at risk of eviction was $88,000. Tzadik worked with renters who were willing to speak with property management and offered 50% off all balances that had more than one month's rent in arrears in exchange for them paying the other half.
At one property that Tzadik third-party manages, there was a miscommunication between the site level and outside evictions counsel regarding whether the property was financed with a federally backed mortgage, leading to a handful of arguably questionable evictions that were dismissed immediately upon discovery.
Of note,twoof the tenants interviewed for the Tampa Bay Times article wereplaced in evictions in March, before lockdown measures and after months of rental delinquencies. One individual who was referenced in the article, is an unauthorized resident who has been arrested on property before. The leaseholder of that unit has a current balance is $4,968.65, and has not made any payments or responded to Tzadik's offers of waiving half of the balance. Assistance options were sent to her door and emailed on June 15, 2020. Again, the tenant has been unresponsive to all collection efforts. Since the beginning of March, that unit has submitted seven work orders. All were completed with completion notes, and the unit has not submitted a repair request since May 1, 2020.
Regarding the PPP loans referenced in the article, they are irrelevant to the evictions and property conditions as acceptance of PPP funds was not conditioned upon eviction forbearance.As suggested by its name, the Paycheck Protection Program was designed to cover payroll costs and keep employees employed.Unlike most of its peer property management companies, all of its employees remained on-site to serve the tenants throughout the pandemic and that is what the funds were expended on. In fact, at the beginning of March, before COVID-19, the company had four employees at Timberfalls. By mid-April, it had five employees and was looking to hire additional employees to take care of work orders, and in June it had six employees in which one was an additional newly added position. Currently, Timberfalls has five employees and one open position. In Hillsborough County, six new maintenance positions have been added since April after the pandemic began to better handle the 300% increase in residents repair requests/work orders.
Due to the PPP loan, Tzadik Properties, LLC was able to retain all its employees company-wide. The loan was also used to provide all Tzadik employees with the newly created Tzadik Stimulus Package, which helps all 217 employees with added expenses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Expenses include hand sanitizer, child daycare, indoor children's toys, TV streaming programs memberships, roommate/spouse job loss, household income loss, and to thank employees for showing up to work every day to assist residents during these uncertain and unusual times.
Per the PPP program, funds also went to keep residents and employees safe per the CDC guidelines and recommendations for COVID-19. Related expenditures included PPE, video doorbells, additional cleaning supplies, masks, gloves, sanitizers, etc.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Tzadik Properties has maintained 96% stabilized occupancy and is continuing business as usual, meaning that all offices and properties were open, including:
Moving forward, Tzadik Properties is continuing to meet with organizations such as City of Tampa Housing and Community Development, Department of Code Enforcement for the City of Tampa, and others, to ensure the end result is positive for the residents, the community and the company. Additionally, Tzadik had reached out to Councilman Luis Viera twice. Tzadik and Councilman Viera are in the process of scheduling a follow-up phone call.
Tzadik is also working with Rapid Rehousing, a subset of the Housing First approach to end homelessness, which is designed to help those who are homeless or at risk of losing their home. During COVID-19, Tzadik placed approximately 10 of its Florida-based tenants in that program, which will cover rental costs for one year. This program is one example of ways in which Tzadik Properties works towards its goal of providing affordable and sustainable housing for all.

The Army Corps of Engineers calls it their roofing mission. When storms damage buildings, a chief rescue activity by the Corps is preventing further damage with blue tarps as temporary roofs. The blue roofers are on the job in Louisiana with a new and improved way of doing the roofing mission. With details, the commander of the Corps Mississippi Valley Division, Maj. Gen. Diana Holland, joinedFederal Drive with Tom Temin.
Tom Temin:General Holland, good to have you back.
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Well, thank you for having me back Tom.
Tom Temin:Give us the ground situation there in Lake Charles. I guess the Corps is at work now in the aftermath of the hurricane.
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Yes. Its been 13 days since landfall, and actually 22 days since we started really paying attention to the approaching storm. And really, to go back a little bit, we were at the time concerned about two tropical storms, Marco and Laura. Fortunately, Marco did not turn out to be a hurricane but Laura made landfall as a strong Cat-4 hurricane in southwestern Louisiana. So weve really been working on this in Louisiana for some time but landfall is what brought us into full strength. And were doing a number of things. Infrastructure assessment, there was a lot of damage to the systems, water systems and wastewater systems. Were doing our temporary power mission, which you see pretty much every storm, the Corps assists with point generation for critical facilities. And then as you mentioned, the temporary roofing mission is just now ramping up.
Tom Temin:And what is the difference this time around? Youve sort of revised the procedures for the roofing mission, Is this because of pandemic or because theres some new technologies available or maybe a little both?
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Well, thats a great question. Really what got us started on this, to do this faster and better, was just the need. Three years ago in 2017, we really did a lot of blue roof missions in the Virgin Islands, in Florida, in Puerto Rico. Really historic levels that year. And when we came out of that, I mean, we were successful, but we wanted to be faster and better. And we wanted to meet the need in a much more efficient way. And so over the last three years, its been a progression of using contractors to help us with the assessments and some other things. And if I could just describe the mission real quick. Basically what this requires is a homeowner has to sign up and grant right of entry because we represent the federal government, the contractor represents the federal government, and then homeowner has to grant access. So thats the first step. So we have to set up a number, used to be they had to be in person signups. And you can just imagine when theres thousands of people affected by a hurricane, what that would be like to develop centralized locations across the state so that folks could go and sign up and grant right of entry. And then the next step was to go to their address, a Corps employee would go to that persons address, assess it, validate that it meets the requirement, and then put that application into a system, thereby generating a work order, which then brought a contractor to the home. So you can just imagine how long that would take for the first roof. And then for number 4500, if thats how many were required. So over the last few years, weve developed new ways so that its not so labor intensive and not so time intensive and not so paper intensive. So one of the things weve done and its really come to fruition this year is alternative ways to sign up for the blue roof program. And so now theres three ways you can sign up on the web, you can call in, or you can do it in person. So what thats allowed us to do is take applications even before weve been able to establish in person centralized locations for those signings. So thats one thing thats really cut down on the time. The other thing is all those Corps employees that would have to go out and physically check a roof and take measurements and validate the requirement, weve since contracted that out, and a company that uses geospatial technology does that from imagery from above. So thats hundreds a day that can be assessed without one person on the ground to go do that manually. And thats about an 80% success rate. What were seeing is that many are validated just through the use of imagery, and then its just a matter of that leaves us with the remaining 20% that we got to go out and check.
Tom Temin:And the imagery, is that obtained by satellite or by drones?
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Weve done it both ways. Im not 100% certain which technology that the company that weve hired to do that now, but I believe it to be satellite. But we have in the past, a year ago, before we came up with this solution, we have used UAS to go over and asses a roof. And actually, weve also used it to then go behind and do the quality assurance, because thats our final step in the process after the contractors done to validate that they did it the right way, and that they should be paid for their services. We have to go out and assess how they did, and weve done that us UAV-UAS.
Tom Temin:I was gonna say you have to probably get fairly close to make sure that its really done. Well, I mean, a satellite image could show whether theres a blue roof, I guess, but it wouldnt show whether its nailed down tightly over the edge of the roof to the side safe.
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Yeah. And, and they can get pretty close. But yes, we would prefer to be closer to it to validate the work done.
Tom Temin:And because people need to be separated and all this and masked and so forth, because of the pandemic, how has that affected the Corps work, at least in the Mississippi Valley division?
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Well, for the hurricane and emergency response, were being very careful about how many people we send to Louisiana, Louisiana is of course struggling with with COVID itself. Theyve been very aggressive about putting evacuees and survivors into hotels, which they have contracts as opposed to putting people in sheltering and congregiate environments. So were sensitive to that, that a lot of hotels are really needed for survivors. And so we are really limiting how many people we send. And so were doing a lot virtually, theres a lot of reach back and a lot of folks from around the country and in the Corps of Engineers supporting it from afar, and weve been able to balance that pretty appropriately. In the grand scheme of things since we went to mostly telework in March of this year, just number one priority is the safety of our personnel. And so a lot of folks are working from home unless their mission essential or if they must do their task from the office or from their field environment. As you know, the Corps does a lot of work from locks and dams and hydropower plants, so theyre out in the field. You really cant do those jobs from home, you really cant telework. And so weve had to adapt shift work, with limiting access. And then being very careful. As soon as we are aware of a case, taking quick action, notifying people and containing any kind of spread that there might be. But by and large, weve really been pleasantly surprised. The Corps hasnt missed a beat. Weve met really every milestone in planning. Our projects have moved on, our programs have moved on, really, with very little impact overall from the virus.
Tom Temin:And just briefly what else is going on in the division and how are some of those projects going because you think of, especially in the hurricane season, there must be levees youve got to work on or dams that need shoring up?
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Well, you know, shoring up the levees of the Mississippi River is really something were constantly doing, constantly improving the flood control features of the Mississippi River. You see especially in recent years, youve seen an increase in flooding in the Midwest. Its becoming quite commonplace, which is causing some damage to the levees. And so a lot of work is being done to repair and to improve the resiliency of the levee system. Likewise, since Katrina, the American taxpayer has invested over $14 billion to build a more resilient system around New Orleans. And so that is always on the forefront of our mind. Of course, it was a very visual event for everybody what occurred in New Orleans and very unfortunate. So weve invested a lot in that. The New Orleans district that is in charge of that particular system and the state of Louisiana is very vigilant in taking care of the state and ensuring that all the new infrastructure is working. It is now under the states control, they actually operate it. But of course, we have a role in assisting them and advising them in advance of any kind of storm.
Tom Temin:And recently, the Army Corps of Engineers listed online a national levee database. Hows that been going? Has there been a lot of hits? Are people doing a lot of exploring on there?
Maj. Gen. Diana Holland: Yeah, this is a great initiative, making sure that we can catalog all of the federal levees and understand the status that theyre in. Its so far been a great success. So what that helps everyone to do is focus where the most repairs are needed, where we are most vulnerable, so that as we get money to improve the levees across the nation, were able to focus that funding in the right direction.
