Wood Look Porcelain Tile Flooring – A New Alternative to Hardwood and Laminate – is introduced by HomeThangs.com …

    - October 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Choosing the flooring for the home is one of the most significant decisions to make in terms of the long-term, overall look and feel of the space. Its a big financial decision, and theoretically its not going to be changed for at least a number of years or ideally, for many years to come. But choosing between real hardwood flooring and laminate means being stuck between two very different choices: authentic and long lasting but difficult to maintain and expensive, or inexpensive and easy to clean, but not so durable and not quite the real thing.

HomeThangs.com introduced an option to get best of two worlds porcelain tiles printed with wood patterns (also called wood tile), that offer picture-perfect natural wood color and variety with durability that exceeds either wood or laminate, and is easy to clean and less expensive than one might think.

1.Porcelain Tiles That Look Like Wood

The wood look tiles introduced by HomeThangs.com are manufactured by Mediterranea, a US-based company with a proprietary printing method that allows them to print high definition images directly onto their porcelain tile. The result is hard, durable, easy-to-clean tiles that look exactly like hard wood, with a spectacularly natural looking degree of built in grain variation and color. The Tumble Weed Wood Tile is just that tile! And unlike many wood tiles, Mediterranea doesnt print their wood patterns on square tile theyre the first company in the US to make 48 long wood tile planks so they can be installed and arranged like a real hardwood floor.

2.Wood Prints Captured In the Wild

With laminate wood flooring, one has to be very careful with how the planks are laid for the simple reason that there are only so many wood grains per style per package, which can easily end up creating an unintentional pattern that will make the non-natural nature of the floor more obvious. Mediterraneas wood tiles are different because each collection doesnt merely represent a few wood-like designs, theyre painstakingly designed to recreate real wood, with a much greater degree of variety in shade and grain like one on a real wood floor. Many patterns (like the Wild Timber Wood Tile ) are even designed specifically to look weather-worn, reflecting our nations coastal boardwalks and rustic cabins, creating a unique aged floor without the wait or any of the difficult maintenance.

A Living Room In The Sky, Built Around One Of NYC's Most Famous Statues

    - October 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The 120-year-old statue of Christopher Columbus, ensconced 70 feet above Columbus Circle with unobstructed views of Central Park and no neighbors, enjoys one of the sweetest real estate deals in Manhattan. But this month, after more than a century of solitude, several thousand New Yorkers are coming to visit.

Yesterday, Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi unveiled Discovering Columbus, a fully functional living room built around the 13-foot-tall statue. Commissioned by the Public Art Fund and supported by the city, the installation is two years in the making, and completely worth the wait. Visitors who reserve free tickets (here) access the space by climbing up six stories of scaffolding and entering through a mundane-looking foyer, which opens onto an 810-square-foot living room. Columbus is dead center, striking a hand-on-hip pose that looks oddly contemporary, amidst the plush carpet and humming flatscreen. A stack of fashion magazines sit next to a purple velvet couch. You can practically kick up your feet on Christopher.

The Bloomingdales-furnished room is worth noting, particularly for the Toile wallpaper Nishi designed himself. The pink paper is decorated with gold-embossed doodles of American icons--Michael Jackson, McDonalds, a hot dog--that made an early impression on Nishi as a kid watching TV in Japan. Eventually, when the installation closes in October, the gaudily decorated space will host a team of preservationists, tasked with restoring Christophers pollution-weathered features.

This is Nishis first installation in North America, but it builds on a decade of similar projects in Asia and Europe. In Ghent he built a hotel around a historic clocktower, while in Singapore he built a bedroom around a massive statue of a Merlion. Nishis work is delightfully accessible on one level (who doesnt want to hang out with Christopher Columbus?), and on another, it offers a deft bit of cultural commentary: The artist says his work addresses the privatization of public spaces, by turning public monuments into decorative items of the private space. Its a natural fit in New York, a city where POPS abound and the rent is forever too-damn-high.

Therein lies the odd cognitive dissonance of Discovering Columbus. The statue was built by Italian-Americans in 1892, as a populist celebration of American immigrants everywhere. The statue Mayor Bloomberg introduced yesterday is a celebration of a very different class of New Yorker. Like the first Americans, middle class New Yorkers have long since vacated the premises--though now, high above one of the richest zip codes in the city, theyre welcome to stop by for a visit.

From the first meeting with Bloomingdales, I said I would like to make a living room which is in typically American taste, Nishi told The New York Times. And they sort of laughed, because they have only expensive furniture.

Free passes for Discovering Columbus, which closes on October 20th, can be reserved here.

Lighting Science Group Lights First "Net Zero" Visitor Center In U.S. National Park System

    - October 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla., Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Lighting Science Group (LSCG), one of the world's leading LED lighting companies, today announced its collaboration with the National Park Service (NPS) to open a "net zero" visitor center in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), the first of its kind in the nearly 400 parks that make up the NPS system. Named for the congressman who introduced legislation to create SMMNRA in 1978, the Anthony C. Beilenson Visitor Center at the King Gillette Ranch is LEED Platinum Certified, produces all of its energy needs through a 94 kilowatt photovoltaic solar energy system and replaces traditional lighting options with Lighting Science Group's energy efficient and made-in-America LED technology.

"The beauty of this new visitor center is that it combines the old with the new to achieve the highest environmental standards," said park spokesperson, Kate Kuykendall. "In addition to the original architect'sextensive use of natural lighting, we're proud to use LED lighting technology to decrease the carbon footprint of the facility."

The 7,000 square foot Anthony C. Beilenson Visitor Center sits on the 588-acre King Gillette Ranch located at the intersection of five major tributaries. The ranch includes the 1928 mansion designed by Wallace Neff for razor magnate King C. Gillette with the visitor center itself once serving as the ranch's original horse stables. Now repurposed with stringent energy efficiency measures --such as Lighting Science Group's LED fixturesthe Beilenson Center achieved LEED Platinum certification. The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act provided $9.5 million in funding for the center's construction ensuring that all building materials including Lighting Science Group's PAR38 lamps are American-made.

"Lighting Science Group is proud to be part of this effort," said Keith Scott, Chief Commercial Officer at Lighting Science Group. "Our bulbs will only use half a Watt per square foot due to the energy efficiency of our LED's and the unique design of this building. In addition, these lights will run for years with no need for maintenance. The low cost of today's LED technology makes this type of conservation available to a range of applications. Imagine the conservational impact if all the NPS visitor centers followed King Gillette Ranch's example."

The new facility is open to the public, and an easy day-trip for those in Southern California with two-thirds of the park within Los Angeles County limits. It is open 7 days per week from 9 am -5 pm.

DGAP-News: IMMOFINANZ Group starts prestigious retail development project in Poland

    - October 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Corporate News | Press Release Vienna/Lublin, 2 October 2012

IMMOFINANZ Group starts prestigious retail development project in Poland

Today, IMMOFINANZ Group presented its next retail development project in Poland: A state-of-the-art high-quality shopping center will be created in the middle of the Lublin City Center, close to the historic castle. Tarasy Zamkowe - previously known as Galeria Zamek - will become an exciting shopping, entertainment, recreation and leisure facility as well as an integral part of the existing inner city attractions. And the signs are promising: The interest of local, national and international retailers for sales areas is exceptionally high. The leasable area will amount to 37,000 sqm, offering space for about 150 shops. Construction works will start in October, and the opening is scheduled for autumn 2014. The total investment for this project will amount to approximately EUR 115 million (PLN 480 million).

Lublin is a promising retail market with 350,000 residents and a total catchment area of 800,000. This fact - together with the strong economic power of the city of Lublin and the low retail density - influenced our decision to buy the former Galeria Zamek site last year. In order to create a shopping mall that fits perfectly into the townscape and offers a unique shopping and entertainment experience, we revised the original design to include the latest retail development trends, commented Eduard Zehetner, Chief Executive Officer of IMMOFINANZ Group - one of the leading real estate investors and developers in Europe. We are very pleased that our efforts to build a state-of-the-art retail property were rewarded by the local authorities and that we will be able to start construction works within the next few weeks. Following the successful extension of the Silesia City Center and the recent start of our first residential development project, Dbowe Tarasy, both in Katowice, Tarasy Zamkowe represents another important development in Poland - a promising market where we plan to further intensify our activities.

From Galeria Zamek to Tarasy Zamkowe

Since the name Galeria Zamek has been on the market for quite a long time, IMMOFINANZ Group conducted a survey in Lublin to evaluate whether the brand still matches the revised concept for the shopping and entertainment center. Tarasy Zamkowe was chosen from several recommendations. This name evokes positive associations among the residents of Lublin and is perceived as a modern, trendy, fashionable, green and inspiring place.

An exceptional shopping center, tailor-made for residents requirements

The remarkable design of Tarasy Zamkowe combines unique architecture with high ecological standards. The distinctive features are greeneries located on the top of the building: lawns, pathways and viewpoints among which the most impressive one will overlook the panorama of the Castle and the Old Town. Public squares at the corners of the shopping center will invite visitors to linger and also create room for events.

Tarasy Zamkowe is projected to accommodate about 150 retail units, 3 restaurants as well as numerous cafes and food court units. The floor area totals 104,000 sqm: 37,000 sqm dedicated to leasable area, 23,000 sqm to public space and plant room and 44,000 sqm to underground parking. Three levels will provide 1,000 convenient parking spaces. Located between Aleje Unii Lubelskiej and Tysiclecia, the new shopping center will also be easily accessible by public transport, bicycle or foot.

IMMOFINANZ Group is already in intensive negotiations with international, national and local retailers. The demand for quality retail space in Tarasy Zamkowe is very high. Thus, Tarasy Zamkowe will offer a well-balanced tenant mix including many well-known brands - some of which are currently not available in the Lublin region.
