Landmark Office Building in Cleveland Business District Renovates Lighting with Acuity Brands Relight Kits

New indoor ambient lighting saves energy, improves work environment and enhances aesthetics in 381,000-square-foot Rose Building - corporate headquarters of Medical Mutual of Ohio.

ATLANTA - Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI), a leading provider of comprehensive, energy-saving lighting solutions, announces that its Lithonia Lighting high-performance volumetric Relight kits were installed in the corporate headquarters of Medical Mutual of Ohio located in the historic Rose Building in Cleveland, Ohio. The extensive lighting renovation project was completed with no work disruption, and is estimated to decrease the building's annual energy use for lighting by more than 50 percent, or from 1.9 million kilowatt hours to about 906,000 million kilowatt hours.

Eco Engineering LLC, a specialized provider of energy-efficient lighting services and upgrades, identified and implemented the lighting solution for Medical Mutual of Ohio utilizing 2,600 volumetric Relight kits. The Relight kits were used to retrofit the deep-cell parabolic luminaires throughout the building's interior. The 2' x 4' volumetric Relight kits feature energy-efficient RT8R recessed lighting components that were quickly and easily installed into existing fixtures, eliminating the need to break the ceiling plane.

The energy-efficient Relight assemblies are expected to reduce electrical demand from the onset of installation, including a reduction in the air conditioning load because the new lighting generates less heat. The building's total annual energy usage is also expected to decrease by more than 50 percent, or from 2.5 million kilowatt hours to about 1.2 million kilowatt hours.

"Volumetric Relight kits are an ideal solution for renovating inefficient and outdated lighting systems," said Kurt Vogel, Lithonia Lighting Director of Product and Market Development for Relight. "In addition to providing energy savings, the Relight kits improve the quality of lighting by delivering the ideal amount of soft, comfortable light throughout the space. The visually uncomfortable checker-board or cave effect created by parabolic and lensed troffer systems is completely eliminated."

Don Green, Director of Facility Services for Medical Mutual of Ohio, was confident in the solution to use retrofit kits from the start. "Lithonia Lighting Relight kits offered a cost-effective solution. We saved on labor because there was no need to rewire. The fast installation process also met our needs for minimal disruption to daily operations," said Green.

QPR have appointed the architects behind Wembley and the London 2012 Olympic Stadium to design 'an unparalleled centre of excellence' at their new training base in Ealing, west London.

The club, who currently train at the Imperial Sports Ground in Harlington, expect to move into the new Warren Farm complex ahead of the 2014-15 season.

Populous, who also designed Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, are putting the finishing touches to their plans for the training centre.

ROOFING firm Southwest Roofing Services have praised the Record for helping them get the 50k payment they were owed.

A ROOFING firm who helped renovate a stately home saved by Prince Charles have finally been paid 50,000 after the Record stepped in.

Southwest Roofing Services were struggling to survive after the main contractors on a facelift of Dumfries House, in Ayrshire, held back payments for work carried out four months ago.

It was only after the Record took up their case that Taylor and Fraser, of Paisley, finally paid up.

Expert slaters Southwest, based in Stranraer, began a 245,000 contract in November.

Director Kevan McCulloch, 46, praised the Record after Taylor and Fraser paid the money they owed.

Kevan said: It was only when the Record got involved we finally got paid.

I cannot thank the Record enough for what they have done.

Last week, craftsman Jim Jarvie, of Airdrie-based JJ Building Refurbishment also thanked the Record for helping to save his business after he was handed a 10,000 cheque by Taylor and Fraser.

Taylor and Fraser said: There are no other issues outstanding.

A driver in Anne Arundel County remains in critical condition after his car veered off the road and struck a concrete retaining wall early Saturday.

The collision happened shortly before 2 a.m. on Catherine Avenue, near Harlem Avenue, in Pasadena.

When police officers responded to the scene, they found the driver, a 29-year-old Severna Park man, outside the car.

The car was badly damaged and the driver appeared seriously injured, police said.

The driver was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment. Police did not have details about his injuries but said they are potentially life-threatening.

There were no other victims, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but it appears that speed was a contributing factor, police said. It has not been determined whether the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

There is a wealth of styles, says Patrick Andrus, a historian with the National Register of Historic Places. In the late-19th and early-20th centuries, D.C. was very cosmopolitan, very receptive to architectural styles. ... D.C. adopted everything that was available.

Many of those architectural gems still stand, largely because of the preservation movement.

Preservation efforts by homeowners, historians and groups Cultural Tourism D.C., the D.C. Preservation League, Preservation Maryland, Preservation Virginia and the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, just to name a few have been extensive.

More than 90,000 properties (most of them residential) are on Marylands registry, according to state officials. In Virginia, there are more than 41,000 houses listed as historic, most of them in historid districts, says Marc C. Wagner, designation manager at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

To date, more than 25,000 D.C. buildings are in a historic district, says Steve Callcott, deputy preservation officer in the citys Historic Preservation Office.

Says Andrus: Its a rich environment for historic preservation.

ARCHITECTS all over the city will get their chance to shine once more on the hardcourt as the sixth season of the United Architects Basketball Club (UABC) tournament opens with the 3rd Corporate Cup today at the Cebu Eastern College gym.

The league has seen the number of teams double from its maiden season, wherein three squads participated. Now, there will be six teams playing in a double round-robin with the top four squads advancing to the semifinal stage.

There, the top two will enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage over the third and fourth-seeded teams, respectively, with the winners advancing to the best-of-three finals.

The teams playing this season are the Rajah Humabon-Boysen Paint, Rajah Humabon/Dipolog/Cagayan-Matimco,Datu Lapu-Lapu-Durabend, CIT/UV/USC-Cebu Homes and Builders, CIT-Puyat Steel and the reigning champions, Cebu Sugbo-Unitec Pipes.

The league launched its brand new season last Friday afternoon in a press conference at the Harolds Hotel that was presided over by new club president Rhyan Pepito. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
