Below decks at the Battleship Massachusetts are other voices from World War II.

The bayonet was a mans weapon in those days. But 70 years ago, at the urging of then-first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Congress instituted the Womens Auxiliary Army Corps. Other armed services followed suit, forming their own female branches, and thousands of women took to factory work welding, running lathes and doing the kind of production work only men did before the war.

During a Thursday reception on the battleship to mark the 70-year anniversary, people were reintroduced to the women of World War II as the battleships permanent exhibit of women's uniforms and artifacts was spotlighted.

We really have quite a variety of uniforms from the various branches of the service, said Elizabeth Isherwood, president of Moore and Isherwood Communications, a public relations firm working with the battleship. We have some Rosie the Riveter items, too.

What both Isherwood and Battleship Cove Executive Director Brad King said is the exhibits centerpiece is the lining of an Army field coat once worn by U.S. Army Nurse Capt. Margaret Christ, who wore it during her time at the 155th General Hospital in Great Malvern, England.

The coats, King explained, came with a detachable lining that could be worn as a bathrobe. Regulations forbade the ornamentation of the coat itself, but the lining was fair game.

Soldiers recovering from injuries gave embroidered patches to nurses as gifts of appreciation and remembrance, King said.

Christ was from Fall River, and the lining of her coat is covered with the unit badges of soldiers, some no more than boys, who were in her care.

It is the key piece of the exhibit, Isherwood said.

With the 70-year anniversary, its a great time to promote this exhibit," King said. Its a good time to remind ourselves of the contributions of women, then and now.

Battleship reception highlights women who served in World War II

OAKLAND -- The president of an Oakland roofing company was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty for conspiring to cheat the Internal Revenue Service, authorities said Thursday.

Tae Son Lee, also known as Mike Lee, 52, the president of Westco Roofing Inc., also was ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton to pay a $367,656 fine, according to Melinda Haag, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California.

Lee pleaded guilty in April to the conspiracy charge that was part of a 50-count indictment handed down in 2010. He admitted to being the sole shareholder in Westco Roofing and that he established several "shell companies" between 2003 and 2008 that he used to impede the IRS in its assessment and collection of Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Shell companies are companies that exist but don't do business or generate any assets.

Lee, according to the plea agreement, made "subcontractor" payments to these companies and used the companies' bank accounts to pay employees of Westco Roofing. Social Security and Medicare taxes were not removed from those checks, authorities said.

Lee is scheduled to begin his sentence Nov. 5.

The GE Evolve LED Garage Fixture used in the parking lots employ cutting-edge technology and feature an advance LED low-glare optical system coupled with a unique thermal management system to ensure long life.

The upgrade has saved the facility nearly $170,000 annually in combined energy and maintenance expenses, helping to further fulfill Spectrums environmental efforts. By replacing older 175-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures, with GEs 60-watt Evolve LED lights, the hospital will see a 67 percent energy reduction, yielding 1.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy savings annually.

Spectrum also installed 50-watt GE Lumination LED Recessed Troffers in ceilings in entrance/exit corridors, replacing 150-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures. The 2'x2' troffers are as thin as the width of a finger and emit a crisp, uniform light to brightly illuminate spaces inside the garage.

Combining overall savings from maintenance costs, energy costs, a Novation rebate, and a Consumers Energy utility rebate, Spectrum will realize project payback in just three years.

Michigan Hospital Lights Parking Deck for $170,000 Less with GE LED Fixtures

A new home for wounded Army veteran Sgt. Kenneth Harker could be ready by October.

The outside walls are up and construction is underway inside for the Homes For Our Troopsdream home.

Builder Mike Conti says it's an honor to be part of this project, soSgt. Harker and his family can move in, he thinks, in October.

Nearly three weeks ago, more than100 volunteers began with a concrete foundation and began building from there.

Thursday, plumbers were inside working on a bathroom.

For those of you who haven't heard his story, Sgt. Harker was on his second deployment in June 2008 when he lost both of his legs in Iraq, and after surgeries and treatment, he returned to Indiana last year.

Thursday night, Conti says he's expecting insulation to go in soon and drywall should go up next week.

He says, building this type of home, has been a new challenge.

"It's been a challenge because it's a new style home for me. It's allADA handicapped accessible. I'm not used to doing that so it's page by page, as we go."

SCIRT Media Statement: Retaining Walls Rebuild Continues In Lyttelton

Good news for residents in Lytteltons Cunningham Terrace and Sumner Road: all easement agreements required for retaining wall ground anchors have now been received by SCIRT. Work will begin on Cunningham Terrace the week beginning 27 August. It is expected to take about eight months.

We are delighted to have this work back on track again, said Duncan Gibb, SCIRT General Manager. Its been a long wait for people at a time when everyone wants certainty.

Meanwhile, on the east side of the port town, retaining wall work that was stopped on Sumner Road resumes on 20 August. A works notice has gone into letterboxes this week.

Preparatory work on both projects was curtailed while easement agreements from all affected land owners were finalised.

The easements for the Christchurch City Council cover the positioning of ground anchors under private properties. Ground anchors are horizontally-drilled steel pins encased in concrete. They provide greatly increased strength to the retaining wall and the road, particularly in the event of any future earthquakes, as well as increased security for residents and road users.

Where ground anchors have been used in the past on Lytteltons Dublin Street and Sutton Quay retaining walls, they have stood up extremely well through the earthquakes. Other streets in Lyttelton are also getting rebuilt retaining walls with preparatory work starting in several places.

Retaining walls city-wide SCIRT will be rebuilding hundreds of publicly-owned retaining walls in the Port Hills. Many more are on private property and will be rebuilt by land owners, as part of earthquake repairs.

SCIRT has prioritised the repair of retaining walls that have impacts on roads, underground services, such as wastewater and water supply, or have a risk of failure that could cause public safety or access issues. Retaining walls above three metres in height may require ground anchors to hold them in place.
