Jets linebacker Bart Scott is the latest player to come forward to say that even though the game of football has been great for his own life, he doesnt think its worth the risk of injury for his son.

Scott told the New York Daily News that even though he has been richly rewarded for playing the game he loves, he doesnt believe its the right sport for most people.

I dont want my son to play football, Scott said. I play football so he wont have to. With what is going on, I dont know if its really worth it. . . . I dont want to have to deal with him getting a concussion and what it would be like later in life.

Keeping kids inside a protective bubble has plenty of risks, too there are a lot more kids struggling with health problems related to obesity than there are kids struggling with health problems related to football but Scott said his 7-year-old son will get his exercise through non-contact sports.

He can play baseball, Scott said. I really dont want him boxing, either, even though he wants to box. I wont let him box. Its not worth it. The most important thing for me is him being around and me being able to spend a long time with him and Im sure, at the end of the day, all the things Im able to buy him from playing football, hed much rather have me.

Scott also knows, however, that if a kid is intent on playing football, its awfully tough for his parents to stop him.

I cant stop him from doing what he wants to do, but I would advise him and try to push other things in his face that may interest him, he said. The more you tell him not to, the more hes going to do it. I would support it, because hes my son, but I also would try to push baseball in his face.

If 7-year-old B.J. is as intense as his dad, its probably safe to say he cant wait to get out on the football field, no matter how much his dad tries to steer him in another direction.

SMITHFIELD - The lagoon sewage treatment system being installed at Friendship Park is part septic tank, part swimming pool and part lawn sprinkler.

Add it all together and the Friendship Park board says it will bring development to the park.

James Branagan, a member of the Friendship Park board, said the lagoon sewage treatment system is pretty basic, even though the price tag is about $435,000 - much lower than constructing a conventional sewage treatment plant.

The park board received $212,000 in a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission and $61,000 from the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association. The commissioners also donated $100,000 in county recreation funds. Branagan said the $100,000 from the county commissioners was used for the design.

The lagoon sewage treatment system sits on a hill above the lake. The park board still has to install about 5,500 feet of pipes and two lift stations to connect the peninsula at the lake and the campgrounds.

The system begins with the sewage being pumped into a buried tank that will separate the solids and liquids, much like a septic tank. The liquid gets pumped into a lagoon covered with thick plastic, where an aerator will allow naturally occurring biological growth to "work" on the liquid for a period of about two weeks.

The water then is pumped to a filtering system where organic solids will be filtered out. The water then is pumped back into the lagoon.

"The process gets a cleaner effluent," Branagan said.

The water then is put through a sand filter, where any remaining solids are filtered out. Branagan said the sand filter will help eliminate ammonia from the liquid, especially in colder weather.

The water then gets pumped into a tank which will add chlorine. Branagan said chlorine tablets, similar to what is added to a backyard swimming pool, are dropped into the tank. He said the chlorine will kill any type of virus and bacteria.

But in a location so abundantly blessed with natural beauty, there can never be too many outdoor dining spaces. Thus, this years crop of new (or newly improved) patios is making us giddy with thoughts of warm summer days drifting away into sultry summer nights. Let me tell you more:

And judging by the lineups (reservations not available), most will still have to cool their heels before getting in. But with warm sand crunching under those flip-flops (the 104-seat, ground-level patio blends almost seamlessly into the seawall) and panoramic views of English Bay, these tables are well worth the wait. Rob Feenies classics are all available here (if you havent tried his breaded-chicken rocket salad, do yourself the favour). Still, this menu rises above other Cactus Club restaurants with several site-specific dishes and a premium (yet value-priced) wine list. Best sundowner bet: scallop-salmon ceviche with the lightly fizzy azul vinho verde.

South Beach Cool Reflections: 801 West Georgia St., Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Vancouver; 604-682-5566. Rosewoodhotels.com/en/hotelgeorgia Vancouver meets Miami at this swishy fourth-floor courtyard that features a central fire pit, infinity water pools, private cabanas and plush teak sofas. Howe Street traders have never had it so luxe. Good thing their days finish early because this urban oasis doesnt take reservations in the evening (and by 6 p.m. on Friday, the wait is about two hours), though there is always Sunday brunch. Best sundowner bet: grilled albacore tuna with Mot Ice Imperial.

Tiny Tiki Bar The Hideaway at Narrow Lounge: 1898 Main St., Vancouver; 778-737-5206. Narrowlounge.com/hideaway You dont always need a view to create a fantabulous outdoor venue. This 20-seat nook, nestled into an east-end parking lot, has been a hipster secret for a couple of years. But now that tiki aficionado Rocket Rod is manning the bar, his Pernod-flecked, fruit-layered rum punches live up to the lushly thatched, twinkly lit exterior. Best sundowner bet: fish tacos with an authentic Trader Vic mai tai.

Flower Power Truffles Caf: 5251 Oak St., VanDusen Botanical Garden, Vancouver; 604-505-4961. Trufflesfinefoods.com The magnolias may be fading, but the laburnum and rhododendron walks are ablaze in blooms. And for a mere $28, you and a friend can enjoy a three-tiered tea service with a front-deck view from the new $22-million visitors centre. The daily panini, scones and croissants dont come close to comparing with the citys finest. But the macarons and chocolates are pretty good, the price is sweet and the garden view is unparalleled. Best sundowner bet: Afternoon tea for two.

Lofty Mountain Views Seasons in the Park: 33rd Ave. W. and Cambie Street, Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver; 604-874-8008. Vancouverdine.com Oh, my! If youve never had the pleasure of being perched over the city with verdant gardens below and the snow-capped North Shore mountains in the distance, get thee quick to this newly redesigned peach of a restaurant. The experience is astounding, especially now that the bar had been punched out with windows and the kitchen has been equipped with a new fire-burning apple-wood grill. Best sundowner bet: Tuscan flatbread with a tequila margarita (honestly).

Smooth Sailing Pier 7 restaurant + bar: 25 Wallace Mews, North Vancouver; 604-929-7437. Pier7.ca We havent been yet, but we just know its going to be great. Dino Renaerts (formerly of Fraiche and Diva at the Met) is the head chef and director of operations for this newly launched two-storey restaurant (with patios on both levels) that graces the waters edge of the North Shores funky Shipbuilders Square. Where else are you going to find live theatre under landscaped cranes? Best sundowner bet: Seafood platter with creative cocktails.

The question

I have always wanted a heated floor in my bathroom, but Im not sure what is involved in the installation. Is an elaborate rewiring job required or can an electrician tap into existing wiring? Are there restrictions on the kinds of flooring we can use? And how expensive is the job likely to be?

The answer

A heated floor is very welcome on a chilly morning or evening. And as more people have begun installing them, the costs have come down. For a typical five-foot- by-eight-foot bathroom, the materials and installation cost approximately $1,300. An electrical pad is placed below the flooring and should be on a separate circuit. Have this installed by a certified electrician to avoid any DIY problems. You can use a timer to switch the heater on and off so that it runs only when you need it.

For the flooring, any tile or stone is suitable, but wood can be tricky because it expands and contracts with temperature changes, creating gaps where you could lose your valuables. The only way around this is to use pre-engineered boards, which keep movement at a minimum.

NORTH BEND -- The family of Danny Retallick firmly believes that he chose to end his life where he did in order to spare his parents' home.

Ultimately, though, with law enforcement still believing he was inside the home, tear gas was shot into the building and a forced entry was made.

Now, as the family grieves, their home has been rendered temporarily uninhabitable and damaged. The financial responsibility also falls on them.

'It's a difficult situation," city Police Chief Steve Scibelli said. But he said homeowners insurance will typically cover these kinds of damages, just as they would any situation over which a family has no control.

Dave Dellinger, general manager of Belfor Property Restoration, said their company is handling the repairs and is indeed working with the Retallick's insurance company on the cost, which will likely run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

He also said it could still be several weeks before they can get the home back to where it was.

Much of the problem is caused by the tear gas, which is a powerful irritant that can cause anything from rashes to respiratory issues.

In fact, Dellinger said, they will probably end up repainting much of the interior.

'We've got to clean everything inside the home," he said. 'It's a residue that attaches to everything and is in almost every room of the house."

They will also be replacing the broken windows and doors.
