Miller has been a part of 50 different committees and task groups during the ten years that he has been active in AAMA and has served as a co-chair on five of these committees. He is the former chair of the AAMA Board of Directors, but continues to serve in numerous other groups and roles involved in guiding the day-to-day operations of AAMA.

In presenting the award, Kinard noted that Miller's career is "as diverse as it is stellar, being a registered AIA [American Institute of Architects] architect and venturing successfully into entrepreneurship as a builder and real estate developer."

Miller has worked at Winco Manufacturing for 30 years, having previous experience as a residential developer and maintaining an architectural practice.

URS Corporation (NYSE: URS - News) today announced that the Company, as a partner in a limited liability company (LLC) with Dewberry, has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide technical support for the agencys Public Assistance Program throughout the United States and its territories. Under the terms of the contract, URS and its partner can compete for, or be assigned, task orders to provide engineering, scientific and architectural services following natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes. Fitzgeralds' rainbow marquee will soon disappear.

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, the Irish-themed Fremont Street property is changing its name to The D Las Vegas. The D represents downtown's resurgence and its owners' Detroit roots. D is also what majority owner and CEO Derek Stevens is called by his friends.

The casino is also getting a $15 million makeover, which is now under way, to go with its new name. The building will be wrapped in the property's new logo, the marquee will be dismantled and replaced with light-emitting diode screens, an outdoor bar will be built and a one-way escalator installed to transport Fremont Street tourists up to the casino's second floor.

And that's just the exterior face-lift.

"We're going to try to have a dramatic visual impact on Fremont Street that blends the old with the new," said Stevens, who acquired the casino with brother Greg in October. The brothers also co-own the nearby Golden Gate casino with Mark Brandenburg.

One of the first transformations on Friday night was ready for public viewing. A new bar, appropriately called Longbar, stretches along a wall where slot machines once dominated the casino floor. Stevens said it is the longest known bar in the state at about 100 feet.

"I didn't want to do rebranding or renaming until we had something to show," Stevens said.

With 15 70-inch, flat-screen TVs lining the wall behind the bar, Longbar is a step in a decidedly more modern direction for The D.

When completed, the casino's first floor will have new slot product, new carpet, a new sound system and dancing table games dealers. Stevens said The D expects to add 100 to 150 new employees to round out the additions.

LORAIN Up to 70 trees on Oberlin Avenue are scheduled to be removed to install water lines as part of a road improvement project.

Before the trees are removed, city officials want to hear what citizens think the trees should be replaced with. Public input is being sought when Downtown Review Board members meet 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

Were going to wait to see what the public thinks before going in that direction, Mayor Chase Ritenauer said Monday. The other issue, too, is, when removed and when the water lines are there, what goes back there?

Ritenauer said a city ordinance forbids bushes or shrubs being planted where the trees are removed. He said city officials need to determine how literal the ordinance is.

Lorraine Ritchey, co-chairwoman of the Charleston Village Society, a neighborhood improvement group, said she understands the removal is necessary, but said it will damage the streets image with visitors.

Economically and aesthetically its a loss, she said. I understand we have to have water lines and sewers (but) its just sad.

Renee Dore, Charlestons other co-chairwoman, said she recalls FirstEnergy Corp., removing 14 trees in her 2nd Street neighborhood in 2007 to make way for power lines.

I was just absolutely devastated, she said. My street has never been the same.

Dore said FirstEnergy initially planned to cut 19 trees but negotiated with neighbors to reduce the number. Dore said she is upset the city hasnt discussed the removal more with residents.

Lighter loads use less gas. If possible, load your vehicle with only what you need for the day. Now, of course, you have to be sensible. You dont want to get to a job site only to discover that you do need that ladder after all.

Get an app: Do you have a smartphone? If so, youll find a number of apps that can help you save money on gas whether its finding gas stations with lower prices, plotting gas-saving routes for multiple destinations or just avoiding traffic to save time idling in traffic jams. Jon Winfreys business plan began with a stack of broken skateboard decks. And they werent even his.

Winfreys friend Ryan Vecchiarelli kept a big pile of worn out, busted decks in his room. Vecchiarelli could never figure out what to do with the wrecks, but he held onto them for years in case an idea struck him. Instead, inspiration struck Winfrey, who saw an ad for a pair of high-end sunglasses with wood frames and thought how cool it would be to make shades out of recycled skateboards.

Murphys Law intervened: By the time Winfrey told Vecchiarelli about his plan, those decks were in the trash. Still, the two friends, both 23, hunted down some busted boards, bought a scroll saw and a few other shop tools, and got to work.

It took three or four months to get anything decent, Winfrey said.

After playing around with what styles translated into plywood, they settled on a design reminiscent of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers. The curves of the deck translate into the natural bends for the nosepiece and the arms of the glasses. A single board, depending on how busted it is, can yield four or five frames. The plywood frames are stronger than youd think, Vecchiarelli said, have a food-safe finish and, naturally, float.

Busted skateboards lead to vision of local business

Boy Scout Troop 86 will be collecting food for the local pantry at the Bloomingdale United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 17 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Residents of Bloomingdale will be receiving a bag on their front porches on Saturday, March 10. Anyone who wishes to donate food to the local food pantry just needs to place the item in the bag and put it on their front porch by 9 a.m. on March 17 and the Boy Scouts will pick it up.

Boy Scouts will also be on hand at the Bloomingdale United Methodist Church at 65 Main Street in Bloomingdale between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to accept food that is dropped off. Note that they would like non-perishables and canned/jarred foods only, please. Also, non-food items such as dish and laundry detergents, shampoo, deodorants, toilet paper, tissues, toothpaste, trash bags, baggies and food wraps/foil or household cleaning products are always appreciated. They are currently well stocked with pasta, canned tuna, and soups, but all food donations are always appreciated.
